SMB1 Glitched Worlds

- You can access glitchy worlds (similar to the minus world) by swapping between Famicom SMB and Tennis cartridges without powering the game off. This works because without powering off, the RAM values are never cleared between these games. When you hold A+Start in SMB1 it takes you back to the world you last played. Tennis must use this RAM address for something, so when you swap back to SMB1 you're taken to whatever numbered world that Tennis stuck in that address. This doesn't work on the Toaster NES but it does work on a top loader NES. -- Watch live at / kosmic

So I looked into it and found exactly which worlds you entered.
2:52 World 94, 5E in hex (Blue Square) [Sadly, not in the 100s.]
11:13 World 68, 44 in hex (Blue Square with a dot) [It's part of the empty coin block texture.]
24:38 World 54, 36 in hex (Cloud texture) [Took so long to find.]
27:14 World 118, 76 in hex (New Cloud Texture) [Actually a mushroom texture.]
30:16 World 200, C8 in hex (Bullet Bill Launcher) [Exactly 200. :O]
38:27 World 34, 22 in hex (Y) [Why not?]
40:38 World 1, 01 in hex (1) ["Aw man, it didn't work." =(]
41:29 World 123, 7B in hex (That's a coin?) [They were very right.]
I stand corrected, Blue Square w/ a dot is a texture for the top left of the "SUPER MARIO BROS." text it the title screen. The dot is actually one of the bolts that are holding the sign up. Thanks to one of my friends for spotting it!
123 looks more like part of the axe at the end of ?-4 than like a coin.
@@meta04 yep
Do you happen to remember how did you do that?
123 is the upper left portion of the axe tile
Your Mario gameplay looked kinda good you should try speedrunning the game. There is a category called any% where people try finish the game as fast as possible. You should give it a try!
are you trolling
Yea it not like he holds the world record speed run.
He has world record, dumbass

Some insight into why this works, as I understand it:
Nintendo wanted the high score to persist after reset. But power-on and reset both take you to the same spot in your game's code, so this couldn't be achieved without some trickery. The trickery was this: put a signature (maybe 3 or 4 bytes) at the end of RAM, and only initialize memory if that signature is _not_ present. They also checked whether the high score was valid (all digits 0-9).
That was all fine and good for preventing corruption in most cases, but here's the problem: Tennis used the _same technique._ Same signature, same addresses, same everything. Maybe they copy/pasted their code from Stack Overflow...
The upshot of this is that Super Mario Bros. considers RAM states from Tennis to be valid, and vice versa. That's why the world number isn't cleared and why you can explore all these places--and why the score persists when you switch from Tennis back to Mario!
That's also why it _doesn't_ work on the rare Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartidge: the multicart reset routine does its own thing before Mario gets a chance, and I guess it clears the RAM no matter what.
And the way to set up accurately which world you want to enter is by counting the footsteps of your character right after the tennis music stopped.
Each footstep increases the address value by 1.
The footstep address is the same as the world addess.
When you think you know everything in SMB, Kosmic makes another video.
@PERRO CHIHUAHUA no
when you think you could access these on Nintendo switch online, life kicks you in the groin.
30:17 I love the sync between the music and you saying "Bullet Bill launcher dash one" xD
Satisfying.
Lol
yo thats epic
Almost. so close
Oddly intrigued by this. Went from not really ever seeing any SMB 1 speedruns, to watching kosmic's world record play, his explanation, and then this. 3 hours I really needed to be getting the work I brought home finished. Thanks a lot.
2:05 Neat how Mario loaded the Tennis sprites in but kept the level
he did that all while running to the umpire's chair, amazing.
IIRC, it's your player's X coordinate in Tennis that influences your start world in Mario.
Not X coordinate but step count
@@levar6618 Yeah, you're right, I found out my mistake a while after making that post. The step count in particular is used for handling the movement sound effects.

7:47, dude... you gotta go play Tetris with those hypertapping skills!
I really wonder how Kosmic plays Tetris.
ikr
What fascinates me the most is not the weirdness of the levels, but the fact that it doesn't simply crash. I wonder if Nintendo coded the game in a way so it's super stable.
It is very stable, but he also got lucly with the ram adresses. There are values that would literally makes unplayable levels, replace entities or even crash the level if you pickup something.
I’m curious.
Could there be potential for a Super Mario Bros. speedrunning category called “Tennis%” or something? Where you start off in SMB, switch to Tennis, go back to SMB, and warp to World 8, and then beat the game.
It could be a really risky thing to put your Famicom games through, though.
Nah, there's no risk. These old electronics are a lot more durable than nintendo's warnings would make you believe.
c lit the warnings are mostly to do with battery life.

@@MultiClittlebut a sweaty speedrunner would for sure brick his nes by pulling off cartridges 200 times with the system turned on.
This was a much more fun video than I thought it would be! I wholeheartedly enjoyed this video!
Why did I love this video so much? Quality entertainment.
You know what your viewers want. This is the good shit, keeep it up. I do wish though that you would repeat what some of the live commenters were saying. A lot of your responses to them I have no idea what you are talking about lol
Fun fact: the swapping cartridges trick is used in speedrunning Jumbo Ozaki no Hole in One Professional for ting manipulation
Had a lot of fun watching this, please upload more stream highlights :D
I love seeing the games with another game's CHR maps.

By the way, Tennis on the NES looks more fun than Grand Theft Auto 5 Tennis.
"More bowser! Disappearing bowser! Invisible bowser! ". 😂😂😂
These videos never get old
Sweet video Young Sheldon. I didn't know about that glitch trick.
Nice to see you talking abut Tennis.
Really though, the reason why there's a sprite for the number is because for the minus world glitch, world 36 is displayed as a blank sprite, so after world 8 it just puts random sprites there I guess.
No, after world 8 there's world 9. What you mean is after world Z
@@hugo__ribeiro World War Z?
Not random tiles, really... Just whatever tile comes after the tile graphic for Z.
Oh my god, I love that the first iteration is exactly like one of the crazy worlds that Kinamania showed in Dendy Chronicles. Just immediately from the get go.
If you don't own a top loader and the required carts, you can still try this yourself in the Nintaco NES emulator. See the FAQ for "What is Hot Swap?"
2:06
Huh, you can see for a second the Tennis's CHR map sprites replacing the ones in the SMB tiles before Tennis actually loads.
Really nice vid, I enjoy it a lot
I love how when you put Tennis in after SMB it changes the graphics and looks all cool
@PERRO CHIHUAHUA Oh my god stop it with the spam
This is awesome. I wish I had a Famicom.
You can also do it with a top loading NES if I remember correctly.

You should create a new SMB speedrun category called Any% Tennis where players swap the cartridges during gameplay and try to reach a point where the game declares itself beaten, just like you did.
Cool the Famicom carts are like the SNES ones in the US, god those NES games were hard to remove!
Boom Tennis for Kosmic
"Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" - Princess Peach, 2018
Beat Blue Square WR?!?!?!
My theory said that, If you swap between Super Mario Bros. and Tennis carts, the Famicom is confused between the Tennis data, and the Super Mario Bros. data, as the games can only be loaded one at a time. So, when you're playing Tennis, a bit of Super Mario Bros was left off, the part when you took SMB, those glitched parts are left off, making its way to Tennis. Similarly, when you took off Tennis, the glitched parts are left off, mixing the SMB data and Tennis data, making their way to SMB, as a result, those mixed data mix with yet another SMB data, creating those levels.
This is the idea of lost level comes from
Legends say Mario is still going inside that pipe
Somehow, some way, I didn't actually know that SMB1 had coin heaven levels until I stumbled upon this video like a year ago.

I really want you to play Tennis live!

1:06 (onwards) The confusion between Tetris and tennis is maybe because the name Tetris was derived from tennis, which Alexey Pajitnov (who invented Tetris) liked to play.
never thought about that, that 1-1 is the only level with no piranha plants in the pipes. :0 but true, in 1-2 it already starts.
That was awesome.
In glitch worlds, going to an exit point like the end of a level or a vine will take you to the beginning of a map
love how this glitch relies on two games with mario in them.
If Kosmic were to play super mario flash id be ROFL'ing
Lol, same :p
Oh yeah and also, you can do FPG there XD
7:20 what if you get a hacked rom that allows you to jump in these cutscenes an you escape this?
What would happen?
Mario walks forever
@@zjosel1179 what if u go in the top?
I think since there’s a little sliver at the end without land, past the cutscene there probably wouldn’t be a place to walk. So death :D (but you never know...)
There's only one exit on the map, so don't expect the top to take you anywhere.
Kosmic ... why are you purple?
edit: sorry guys, I'm stupid. it's the reflection of the lavender-ish pixels in the background on his face
Don't be silly, he ate the experimental 3 course meal chewing gum from Willy Wonka's Factory.

If you want a SMB randomizer and you don't have a flashcard/don't want to use an emulator, there is a without hacks method to it! (IDK if I'm right but this may be risky)
+Nicholas Oitembro Dias [ItzKukie] Is it with a Game Genie?
@@cosmicjenny4508 Well, it's literally what Kosmic did in his video. Pull out the SMB cart without powering off the console, put other game cart on the NES, then play the game a bit if you want, pull the cart off and then put the SMB cart on the NES again and GG. SMB randomizer without hacks.
+Nicholas Oitembro Dias [ItzKukie] Oh. The way you worded the comment made it sound like there was an alternate method of performing this.
@@cosmicjenny4508 Yeah I know. I forgot to change it.
Mario is stuck in a Groundhogs Day loop. Who knew tennis was to blame? If only Bill Murray knew.
Makes me wonder if that same technique works on Baseball. I doubt it, but it'd be interesting if the generic Nintendo sports games had similar properties to Tennis.
"Someone could actually have gotten that world record on their first try."
The first person to do anything got the world record time for doing it... even if no one knows about it.
I have a guess as to why some are utterly random when others are real levels with the environment changed. I bet the first 2 or maybe 3 bits of the level number set the environment type, while the rest are the memory pointer for where to find the level layout. Thus, if you get 1011 1010 but a real level is 0011 1010, you’ll get a real level pallet-swapped, but if you read 1011 0001, and there isn’t a level with that address, you get weird garbage data. This is just an educated guess of course, but it’s probably close.
back in time for me as akid there was a Chaines console do like that
Is Kosmic Thanos?
There are game genie codes too that allow you to access these too
This glitch can also be done on an NES Top Loader and on clone systems
Blue Square - 55 will appear as -Crown and a piece of the Title Screen iirc
how do you get your controller inputs to display?

It's a fault because you're hitting the ball to the big rectangle in the back, when you're only allowed to serve the ball to the small rectangle on the opposite side (left/right) to where you start from.

7:05 All that we see or seem. Is but a dream within a dream.
The tennis judge is Mario
Does it work with the American super Mario bros rom? I have those big cartridges
2-1 is like like mario purgatory and you can't escape
Can it work with other games besides Tennis? If not, why not? Why specifically Tennis?
does this work with games other than Tennis?
So what actually _is_ the difference between the two types of blocks in the stairs? There's no chat in this video.
One is a wall and one is a stair. One is used to build the random little walls like at the start of 1-2 for example. The other is for stairs.

not sure if it was time or ROM limitations but as a programmer you should never assume that everything is correctly inizalized from the start. especially in assembly on such hardware.
always imagine memory being filled with completely random data and you need to clean up a bit before you can use it
Coin - 1 is probably an axe.
What's world 94 and world 68?

Can we do the same in Retroarch or other emulators?

Why fry the cart when you can use a game genie and go to the same places without damaging your console?
Crimefighter you won't really fry it.
Will this work with new top loaders?
