금년 노벨 문학상 수상자가 연세대 출신이다. 연세대 분위기를 남기고 싶어서 동영상을 찍었다. 오늘 외부인들까지 와서 노벨상 축하 프랭카드 앞에서 사진을 찍는 모습을 여럿 발견했다. 저는 모자와 마스크를 썻으니 관종의 유혹과 나르시즘의 손짓을 거부할 수 있다. 상을 받은 국문과 출신이라는 한강 소설가의 글은 읽어본 적이 없다. 인터넷 상에서 여러 평가들이 쏟아져 나오고 있다. 소설가의 글을 읽어본 적이 없는 나로서는 그녀가 쓴 소설을 평가할 수 없다. 그렇지만 이번 수상의 의미에 대해서는 할말이 있다. 노벨 문학상을 통해 한국어와 한국 문학에 대한 힘을 인정받았다는 것이 가장 큰 의미가 있다는 것을 말하고 싶다. 개인적으로 이번 수상의 가치는 세계 문학계의 BTS라고 표현하고 싶은데 적절한 비유인지 망설여 진다. 한글과 한국 문학이 앞으로도 더 세계 속에서 큰 역할을 하길 기대한다. 이번 노벨 문학상 수상을 통해 앞으로 더 좋은 글과 우수한 작품이 많이 나와 한국 문학의 위상을 세계적으로 드높이길 응원해 본다.
This year's Nobel Prize in Literature winner is a graduate of Yonsei University. Wanting to capture the atmosphere at Yonsei, I filmed a video. Today, I saw several people, including outsiders, taking pictures in front of the banner celebrating the Nobel Prize. Since I was wearing a hat and a mask, I could resist the temptation of attention and the lure of narcissism. I’ve never read anything by Han Kang, the novelist who won the award and is an alum of the Korean literature department. There are a lot of reviews online, but having never read her works, I can’t evaluate them. However, I do have something to say about the significance of this award. I believe the greatest significance lies in the recognition of the power of the Korean language and Korean literature through the Nobel Prize in Literature. Personally, I’m tempted to describe the value of this award as comparable to BTS in the global literary world, though I hesitate to say if that's an appropriate analogy. I hope that the Korean language and Korean literature will continue to play a significant role on the global stage. With this Nobel Prize in Literature, I cheer for more excellent writings and outstanding works to emerge. - Dr. ClemS
