No hay dos Schuberts. Un genio como pocos. Increíble que, en tan pocos años que vivió, pudo haber compuesto tanta musica en varios géneros y.... TAN BELLA!!!

The piano dances by Schubert must not be dismissed as light, meaningless fluff for elitist events... they are incredibly characteristic and filled with that heart-wrenching melody and legato accompaniment that makes Schubert so special, especially those in A-flat, a key that Schubert completely mastered. With Schubert, the performer must try to express beyond what is written, and the dances apply significantly.
I can just imagine Schubert sitting alone at the fortepiano, perhaps Mayrhofer as his side, while his entourage dances with witty Viennese maidens in a small candlelit ballroom; the crowd occasionally stops and listens to the music being played.

You know, you should really credit the pianist in this video. It's unfair to him/her, and we would like to know too so we can look out for their albums if any.

I agree, je suis d'accord. 🧡💛 Such diaphanous beauty. Ever shifting between an achingly lovely yearning and the joy of the resolution just ahead. Ambrosial and profound. 🌾

Some he plays okay, but many of them, particularly the compositional gems in 9b, he totally mangles...

These pieces are NOT technically difficult.
BUT: they are all a severe test of musicality. I've heard many try.. and quite a few fail. Schubert to me is the late classical/early romantic analog to Chopin. Both require supreme musicality on the part of the pianist to get to the heart of the ideas being expressed.
BTW: I played piano for 40 years before I had to stop.. so this isn't theoretical for me. I had a very worn copy of these very dances for years, and memorized like 1/2 of them. At the end of a stressful day, this is what I turned to.
Finally.. I'm not overly fond of some of the interpretations. I think he takes some of the pieces too quickly.. which kills the flow of the harmonic transitions.. which is where many of these pieces really shine. He also does what a lot of modern pianists do: adds in un-indicated rubatos. Sometimes that is ok.. but I think Schubert suffers when adding a lot of rubato.

@@rbarnes4076Schubert puts Chopin to shame in terms of raw musicality...Chopin's music is all pretty on the ears making it easy to seduce the listener. Meanwhile Schubert tends to be boring unless you really go deep into the essence of his art because it sounds so comparatively simple.
