Anybody notice how we are not getting constantly hemmed in our own end any more? It is so nice to have a few D men that are capable of both breaking up the cycle and moving the puck. We haven't had that since the Pat Quinn era. Good job guys, keep it up.
100% that's why I was saying when Dubas was here that they need to get rid of him and the coach, before they'll ever improve. Treliving and Berube are a good combo for management.
The addition of OEL and Tanev is an significant improvement over last years editions of Brodie and Giordano. I thought Timmins has played well in his time as Leaf....when he was on ice. He just might be fine too.
@williamrobinson604 absolutely noticed this also but I believe he has been told to focus on his defensive play and it will help his offense. For some reason, people have a hard time believing that concept, but it is so true. When you and your team have the puck more, it is much easier to score l9l Pretty simple.
I think this is the problem. He was a fringe 4th liner for Florida last year, so on a cup winning team he should not be that high up the lineup. It speaks to the problem they continue to ignore, you can’t have so much money tied up in four players because there is not enough cap to fill out your lineup. It is too top heavy, it is riskier when you only have two Top 15 paid players because your top guys have to stay healthy I.e. Barkov’s injury is going to hurt FLA as now every player needs to step up one rung on their role and you can’t just replace him. It is the nature of a cap based league, but the cup is a four series grind and you need contributions from your whole line up. Edmonton failed just barely and technically they only had one Top paid player (though Driesaitl’s contract kicks in next year so this might be there last chance). The Leafs likely need three better middle six forwards and one more top 4 d (meaning upgrades on what they have - while losing one of their top three, I am assuming you are not resigning Tavaras unless he is in the 3-4M cap range because he is a 2.5 so on a contender you would like him to be your 3rd centre). Your youth can provide this but we overrate where players like Knives and McMann are in terms of a Stanley Cup contender. Knives needs to become legit top 3 forward and McMann or Robinson needs to be a legit top 6 as per a Stanley Cup team so they need to get into the Top 60ish and Top 120ish forwards in the league. The Leafs need to get underpaid value from two of three forwards and their goaltending to even have a chance with two of Matthew’s, Marner or Nylander. With three it is so thin that almost everything has to go right. I think they are afraid because you risk the playoffs with only two if one or two of them go down with significant injury. It going to suck because they are wasting the window of two of their top guys in their prime.
@RetroHondo67 Re Knies and Robertson. It's not cookie cutter. You don't need to be in this "Range" as far as points, goals, assists. to play top line or 2nd line. Your skill set needs to compliment the players on your line. Look at part of your example. Edmonton. Hyman got 50 goals. Not because he was a good skater, stick handler, passer playmaker. No. He's got grit, can take slashes to his lower half and stick his face in front of pucks that bounce into net. Knies is a similar style player playing with similar offensively gifted guys. Why put Robertson on a top line with Matthews and Marner. He's losing shots on net being on that line. He's not going to park in front, he's like 5'5 the Goalie will blow on him to move him out of the way. You pay your best players to do what they do better than most in the league can do. And you fill in the rest with talented players that have the right skill sets to compliment the stars. Robertson would benefit playing as the shooter scorer on a line, which means he needs a playmaker and a net front line mate Hence playing with Tavares/Domi or Holmberg/Patches. Mcmann is a Swiss army knife. He's fast, he's big, he's tough, he can pass, he can shoot, He just doesn't do anything of those things at an elite level. However he pairs well with any line. Throw him up top, he'll park in front the net. Put him on the 2nd line, he'll shoot a bit, pass a bit, be in front a bit. Put him on the 3rd or 4rh line, he'll forecheck and play with grit. The leafs couldn't get the right balance of complimentary peices around the Core till last year. And Sammy took away any chances at a cup run. Woll almost saved the day but is made of glass. We greatly improved the D. We greatly improved the G with Stolarz (Hildeby waiting in the wings) While also having a much better team around the Core It's not all perfect. We need a real 2C to move Tavares to 3C. And we need 1 more D. Both of which will come near the deadline Liljegren Kampf Jarnkrok Reeves Timmons Cowen Minten Are all probably gone at the deadline to facilitate those trades
That's the opposite of what you want from Reeves. You want him flying around smashing guys into the boards, taking heat. He's not here to score in any way shape or form He's a goon. Let him goon.
@@shaneturner1809 I want him to goon too, but not at the expense of being the only one that takes a penalty. Even goons at times have to know when to fight, unless they don't care about having their team be a man short.
Woll isn't going to have tightness or be banged up if the team plays right in front of him. I mean the beast will have tightness or be injured after last night to the same with Stolarz. The saves they are being forced to make. If that keeps up all 3 of them will be on the shelf
Since Matthews and Marner are both defensively sound forwards, I wouldn't mind seeing Robertson promoted to the first line. Marner can dish the Leafs best shooters passes all day long.
It's silly to bring up stats so early in the season -- being such a small sample size. As far as Woll, goes... with the goalie depth they have I think it is good for the Leafs to use their other Goalies when one may be a little banged up. From what I heard it's nothing serious, but precaution. The defence has to tighten up still to lower those dangerous chances that make Goalies put themselves in vulnerable spots in order to make the save.
