I never heard any other cinema camera company or Red, Sony or Canon camera user use the term OPENGATE until Blackmagic came out with their fullframe cinema camera! If they did, like I said, I never heard them use that term!
@@bford1908 Sony Venice 2 and most Arri cameras (Alexa for instance) shoot Open Gate since ever. This term is broadly used in higher film productions. Definitely a banger to have this feature available on such low budget camera!
@@bford1908 "Open Gate" goes back many decades. On film, some people would use a slide matte to change the aspect ratio, or shoot open gate, which on 35mm film is 3:2 aspect ratio. When it comes to digital cameras, ARRI is most notable for providing an "open gate" option. Other cameras cropped the sensor to get a faster readout. But RED, Sony, Panasonic, etc cameras now have that option too.
Sony's got to get with the open gate game. I personally can not stand BMPCC ergonomics and lack of things like usable autofocus and in camera image stabilization, battery life, flip out screen, etc. But man.. that open gate! Sony!!!! Get with it!
@@TheCrooksandCastle not too many. That still doesn’t negate the fact that it is super useful in some situations. Especially eye tracking while wide open on a lens and the subject is moving. Not every production has the budget for a focus puller. And we are talking about lower budget cinema cameras here, where as an Alexa Mini LF production certainly would have or should have the budget for a dedicated focus puller. To be fair the Sony Burano has autofocus which for nature film documentary would be invaluable to have the ability to eye track on animals moving in and out. Idk man.. autofocus is pretty useful in certain situations and on lower budgets for sure!
The only thing I can’t stand is the ergonomics. They need a box camera badly ! Too bad 3rd parties are doing them first. But the Panasonic S5II/X has open gate and probably the same sensor as the BM6K FF
I think Panasonic Lumix s5IIX (+BM recordr if you need BRAW) will be better option. Usable AF, best IBIS (also in anamorphic mode) + little bit less rolling shutter, ProRes recording, h.264, h265 codecs.
I have this exact setup with my S5 ii x and am trying to make it work but am considering moving to BM because the rolling shutter on the larger formats like open gate on S5 ii x is atrocious and there is no way of fixing it. With BM it has gyro data which you can enable once imported into Resolve to effectively remove or greatly reduce rolling shutter. Also on S5 ii x you lose 4.2.2 when going open gate internal and if you go external for BRAW you lose open gate. Again for me the killer is the rolling shutter, and also the warping wobbling look from the IBIS. It's frustratingly close to being perfect but theres a catch every way you go with it unfortunately.

@@1bertoimagemaker Yes it's pretty great.
