    Open Gate is my new favorite camera feature! Do you think it’s useful or a gimmick?

      I never heard any other cinema camera company or Red, Sony or Canon camera user use the term OPENGATE until Blackmagic came out with their fullframe cinema camera! If they did, like I said, I never heard them use that term!

      @@bford1908 Sony Venice 2 and most Arri cameras (Alexa for instance) shoot Open Gate since ever. This term is broadly used in higher film productions. Definitely a banger to have this feature available on such low budget camera!

      Open Gate is great. I use it on Panasonic all the time. And when I turn the camera vertically for horizontal shooting, I get a "global shutter".

    • @katlis
      @katlis 8 месяцев назад

      @@bford1908 "Open Gate" goes back many decades. On film, some people would use a slide matte to change the aspect ratio, or shoot open gate, which on 35mm film is 3:2 aspect ratio. When it comes to digital cameras, ARRI is most notable for providing an "open gate" option. Other cameras cropped the sensor to get a faster readout. But RED, Sony, Panasonic, etc cameras now have that option too.

    Sony's got to get with the open gate game. I personally can not stand BMPCC ergonomics and lack of things like usable autofocus and in camera image stabilization, battery life, flip out screen, etc. But man.. that open gate! Sony!!!! Get with it!

    • @ChrisParayno

      Open gate is not an issue, neither is the open gate IMO but yeah I HATE the ergonomics of the BMPCC.

    • @TheCrooksandCastle

      how many cine cameras that uses autofocus?

    • @timdanyo898
      @timdanyo898 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@TheCrooksandCastle not too many. That still doesn’t negate the fact that it is super useful in some situations. Especially eye tracking while wide open on a lens and the subject is moving. Not every production has the budget for a focus puller. And we are talking about lower budget cinema cameras here, where as an Alexa Mini LF production certainly would have or should have the budget for a dedicated focus puller. To be fair the Sony Burano has autofocus which for nature film documentary would be invaluable to have the ability to eye track on animals moving in and out. Idk man.. autofocus is pretty useful in certain situations and on lower budgets for sure!

      The only thing I can’t stand is the ergonomics. They need a box camera badly ! Too bad 3rd parties are doing them first. But the Panasonic S5II/X has open gate and probably the same sensor as the BM6K FF

    I think Panasonic Lumix s5IIX (+BM recordr if you need BRAW) will be better option.

    • @silas1414
      @silas1414 8 месяцев назад +1

      I have this exact setup with my S5 ii x and am trying to make it work but am considering moving to BM because the rolling shutter on the larger formats like open gate on S5 ii x is atrocious and there is no way of fixing it. With BM it has gyro data which you can enable once imported into Resolve to effectively remove or greatly reduce rolling shutter. Also on S5 ii x you lose 4.2.2 when going open gate internal and if you go external for BRAW you lose open gate. Again for me the killer is the rolling shutter, and also the warping wobbling look from the IBIS. It's frustratingly close to being perfect but theres a catch every way you go with it unfortunately.

    • @1bertoimagemaker
      @1bertoimagemaker 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@silas1414 i am a solo videomaker and photographer. For me, the S5IIX was the best option. If i need less rolling shutter, i can change for APS-C mode. It´s not a perfect camera, but it´s a great choice for video and photo. The S5IIX colours are great, ISO is very good in low light, autofocus, IBIS, size and ergonomy. Blackmagic is a great company and the BMPCC line is great, but for a hybrid use, i prefer the S5II cameras.

    • @silas1414
      @silas1414 8 месяцев назад

      @@1bertoimagemaker Yes it's pretty great. For me it wins in most categories against BM but the BM gyro data/rolling shutter correction and having everything built in may end up being preferable in my case. I've done thorough testing with S5 ii x BRAW external monitor shooting and internal recording and am going to test out the BM. There is one shot autofocus and 20+ megapixel stills on the BM, not quite the control as a true hybrid camera and I'm sad to give up some hybrid features but will see how it goes.

    Open Gate is definitely no gimmick. The levels of options and new perspective on composition is exponential. A side note most people don’t know is that many smart tablets and iPads are designed with 3:2 or 4:3 screens. So it’s great for those devices as well as larger screens.

    its a shame that the FF version can't output native 1080p of any kind. which means its useless for broadcast/livestream bc you'll get black stripes / needs digital zoom/chop.
    Great for offline recording though.
    i did the exact opposite, sold my BMC FF for an FX3 for this reason.
    BMC menu system is hands on the best though, but the lack of 16:9 live output and the FX3's unbeatable low light performance was a deal breaker for me.
    The BMC Studio camera can do 16:9, the Micro Studio can do 16:9, but they only have 4:3 and Super35 sensors... Which heavily limits you in lenses.
    A FF Studio version with SDI would be a great addition to the BMC line.

      Yo! It’s a normal PL to L adapter off Amazon. Like $130! I’ll link it below. And I did consider the Saturns, I actually have the 35mm. They’re super small! Almost too small for my liking. They have a nice squeeze to them but they lacked true character for me. The Blazar lenses feel more like true anamorphic lenses to me because they have such insane distortions and characters on the edges. Really makes whatever you’re filming stand out.

      @imaflymydroneatit PeoRes is industry standard. Some productions use ProRes 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 only. Also, BRAW is a hudge file size container with 5:1 compression or lower, but if you choose 12:1 or 8:1 - it has compression artifacts in some environments.
      12 bit ProRes 4444 XQ - less file size than 12 bit BRAW 5:1 with equal quality. Also ProRes have a faster workflow in every editing software and supports by any editing software BRAW - not.
