This could have been a Stanley Cup Final at any time in the mid-80s. It would have been amazing to watch

When they would escort the Elder Habs to center ice.... this whole video is making me dizzy with remembrance....but seeing her again really hits and makes me feel younger. So glad I live in a border city and was (am!) able to see this, Every Saturday night, many many nights in the spring ( I think one spring it was 21 nights in a row for HNIC) 3 months great weather, otherwise

Wow...pretty damn deep team when you think about it, good mix of established players and a nice long list of young guys. Too bad the organization lost it's way and has led us into the endless expanse of mediocrity we find ourselves in today.
I agree. You know, had the Oilers not been so dominant during this time period (1984-90), Montreal probably would have won another Cup to go along with the ones in '86 and '93. The Habs had a great team in '89. Unfortunately for them, Calgary was just a shade better.
@@briancusack4386 Interesting that you bring that up (although it took me a year to notice lol). I am not at all sure that Calgary was the better team in '89. In fact, I'm convinced to this day that Montreal had the better team, the better coach and the better goalie. What they didn't have for perhaps the only time in their history, was destiny on their side. Lanny MacDonald HAD to win a cup and unfortunately for us, his only two shots were against Montreal. And don't forget, the Canadiens were up 2-1 in that series with game 4 at home. Not many teams in that situation end up losing, especially in 6. As to your first point, I have often said that I believe Montreal would have won another cup in the early 80's. The only missing piece was a world class goaltender. Evidently the team thought so too because they actually drafted Tretiak in 1984! Oh if only.....lol.

Yes, you have made that point (about a world class goalie) several times. Who am I to argue? The fact that the Habs won with Roy in '86 reinforces your argument.
As for '89, you may well be right. I agree with you that Montreal had the better coach and goalie. Also, as you noted, they were up 2-1 in this series. If you go back and watch some games/highlights though, Calgary really took it to them in games 4-6 and the Flames blew game 2 (or was it 3?). In any event, I'm glad it didn't go seven games. Otherwise, Patrick Roy may have stolen it for Montreal. 😊
@@briancusack4386 Thanks, I really appreciate that. It's just fun to remember and consider what might have been lol. And at least now there is reason to have hope that Montreal might have a contending team in a year or two and that hasn't been the case in a long, long time! Take care man.

they were pretty deep, yes. but the oilers' THIRD line center, glenn anderson, is in the hall of fame, and noone disputes it. their THIRD line center. that's just insane.

Roy , Richer , Carbo , Corson , Robinson ,Chelios , Nilan , Kordic , Lemieux et compagnie... le bon vieux temps que le team étais capable de scoré des but faire les arrêt clé des bonne mise en échec solide pis des goon qui lâchais les gants contre nimporte quel timbré tel que Marty Mcsorly. Pas étonnant qu'ils aient gagné la coupe en 86 les gars acceptais de souffrir pour gagner... dir que max paschezpotroqui a deja été capitaine

No way to know for sure. People forget, it is also not like he did it with 30 seconds left. They had over 5 minutes to get the equalizer, and couldn’t. Plus, the Flames managed to win 3 other games in the series. It may be likely, but no way you k ow they win the cup for sure without that own goal.
Just like 93 when pittsburgh took a crap. Both cup wins were lucky as they didn't have to play the top team either time
@@Chrisman77 Not the Habs fault that the favorites lost to teams that Habs beat in 5 games. 86 Flames, 93 Islanders and Kings.
@@craigkerr2764 Good point. In fact, the Oilers had just over 15 minutes left to tie the game. Also, you make a great point about Calgary winning three other games. Two of those victories came in Edmonton (games 1 and 5). Also, it's worth noting that in two of the games the Flames lost (games 2 and 6), they blew two-goal leads. In my humble opinion, Calgary deserved to beat Edmonton. Regardless of Steve Smith, the Flames deserve full marks for their victory.
