Thanks for demonstrating these details in helping people try to determine authenticity when buying one of these devices.. I'm learning that there are a lot of fake Mitutoyo calipers out in the world. It really makes a guy question whether or not its worth it to take a chance on getting ripped off. I guess like buying high dollar watches the mantra " Know your seller," holds true. We should have some exceedingly stiff penalties for this kind of theft.
Very easy to fix. Make the 3rd party seller platform (Amazon/Ebay) liable for fakes. They will immediately crackdown on counterfeits. Right now they are aware of counterfeits but they are happy to collect their commission without protecting the buyer.
Thanks for this I was a bit confused when I first examined the caliper I had received as the signature was printed, and 3 of the 4 buttons were not recessed. Especially since everything else like the case, the print, the battery and the accuracy seemed correct. Glad that you put my fears to rest since it was not cheap.
The battery terminal design and the start up display are different between fakes and the real thing too. When I insert a new SR44SW battery into my Mitutoyo caliper, 5 dots flash until the origin button is pressed. Good film thanks
A quick check of the number of decimal places displayed is 3 to the right of zero on the fake. 4 on the legit model -03. The fake with its cheaper microchip can only display 3 decimal units. Quick and simple. Packaging is really insignificant. Measuring is where the rubber meets the road with this tool.
I would rather buy a quality caliper made in Japan than a Starrett made in China. Only buy from authorized dealers like MSC, or McMaster. I am very happy with my Mitutoyo 500-72-20.
Unfortunately yes. Third party seller merchandise at Amazon gets mixed up with Amazon's own supply. Most of the third party sellers on Amazon sell fake Mitutoyo calipers so you may get shipped a fake caliper even if you buy directly from Amazon.
I bought one from a third party there (MSI Viking) and was able to check the list to confirm they are a legitimate seller. It shipped from them as well. Not from Amazon.
The electronic part may be affected, but moisture or a few drops should not affect its operation as it has fairly tight seals. The body is made of stainless steel so it's rust proof. Hope that helps.
A good microphone is essential in making videos. The sound quality was like a photo out of focus. Very hard to make out what you are saying. Also, if you don't have a fake one next to it for comparison, it is not very useful to be so one-sided. Use a wider angle lens too, hard to see the whole picture.
Thanks for the feedback. Will definitely fix the audio issues next time. I was thinking of getting an obviously fake one for the review, but a part of me refuses to give money to a counterfeiter.
@@DesignReviews Ah yes good point! I never thought of that! See if you can look up some fake ones, copy the photos, and then show the difference side by side. These Chinese copies are becoming so good, I almost bought one on ebay for $50, then realized it was fake! Too cheap for a real one. Keep up the good work.
This is way, way over kill. If the case doesn't say made in Japan on the bottom, if the battery doesn't say made in Japan on it and if the letters ABS isn't stamped in the bottom of the battery compartment, then it's a knock off.
Best review I've seen to make sure mine were legit. Mine looks exactly like yours and has all the same documentation.
this video deserves more likes!
👍🏽 Thanks!

Good point. Unfortunately some of the fakes now go to 4 decimal points as well :/
Brilliant video. Many thanks.

does amazon usa sell fake mitutoyo calipers?

@@HippieMagic yes. MSI Viking is a legit seller. The problems occur when Amazon mixes up Merchandise for Fulfilled By Amazon orders.
You never made that video comparing the two calipers, did you?
Not yet. Just haven't had the time :/
price
Fake ones are priced the same as the real ones. Amazon is the main culprit.

If its off by .001 consistently, its authentic.
Hahaha! .001 exactly.
There are now some very convincing fakes now. On these fakes the inspection certificate serial number is stamped. It should be printed
