- Megaraptora were Predatory Theropod Dinosaurs from the Cretaceous. In this video I take you through the discovery and history of Megarptora; describe them in detail based on up-to-date, reliable studies; Discuss the different genera and species of the family and finally, give you a glimpse into the decade old, ongoing argument regarding the classification of this enigmatic group of Dinosaurs. Ultimately, you will learn that Megaraptora are extremely under-rated Dinosaurs. Our most recent studies describe them as very close relatives to the Tyrannosauridae family, only strongly adapted for the use of their claws as weapons.

I've been curious about this type of dinosaurs for quite some time now and I love how clearly you explained the changes regarding their classification. It's truly an interesting and underdiscussed topic.

What makes megaraptorans interesting to me is more their phylogeny. They were thought to be allosauroids, then basal coelurosaurians and now a distinct lineage of tyrannosauroids. Pretty messy ain't it.
Don't know why every video about dinosaur have to put T.Rex in the title and why compare Megaraptor to T.Rex since it's the least similar to it?
RUclips algorithm. Rather than saying: "potentially a member of tyrannosauroidea and dominated the south at the same time that T-rex dominated the north" you just put "the T-rex of the south". Unfortunately, my way gets more views, and I looooove views 😂

11:00 not true, only western North America and most of Asia (south Asia could be dominate by megaraptorans thanks to some tooth that doesnt fit either tyrannosaurid nor carcharodontosarid, suggesting probably 12-13 meters long predator in Nanxiong Formation) while most likely tyrannosauroids got outcompeted by abelisaurids in Europe
and 2022 study shows that only Tyrannosaurus had strong bite force of 5.5 tons while Tarbosaurus (second largest tyrannosaurid) had 2.7 tons, thats carcharodontosaurid level bite force and yet there's still carcharodontosaurids that had stronger bites (like for example: Giganotosaurus himself)
and 11:14 also not really true, as in Africa and north South America would be abelisaurids the dominant predators

If only incomplete skeletons are found. How do they know its has long hand claws?
We have found the hand and claws of several specimens. We've also found much of the legs of megaraptora specimens and even the hip bones. But not much else, apart from a few vertebrae and a couple fragmented skulls.
By filling in the missing elements from closely related genera. And phylogenetic bracketing, basically who is related to whom.
