Hi Anna, Congratulations! That is a great achievement, and thank you for sharing this great news. I am very happy to hear that the videos were helpful. I am so happy! Welcome to more Tableau journeys ahead! I use it everyday, and everyday is as fun as yesterday. All the best! Donabel
Hello Donabel, Thanks for sharing your tips and or the time you take putting together the videos. 2:23 - Question 12 - Difference from overall average profit The question only mentioned 31 069, but while resolving it you typed 30 000 in the filter. How did you guess or why did you use 30 000 ?
Hi Eddy, That's a great question. I probably should have been more explicit what my intention or strategy was in the video so as not to have created confusion. The question was: Which sub-category is $31,069 below the average profit across all categories? In order to be able to answer this question faster especially when there is time constraint during an exam: 1. I have chosen to use $30,000 (since it's close to $31,069). Faster to type in the filter. 2. I have added the labels in the bars, and visually I will be able to match the number required (as per the question) and numbers I have in my bar chart. The beauty of working with Tableau is some things will not need to be exact in the filters etc, as there are things that will stand out from the visual/chart. I hope this explanation helps. Donabel
wow, really impressive. You really have a gift for teaching and making everything look so easy 🙂. Also, you really know your way in the application. not sure if you already made such a video but i would really appreciate if you make one that gives a good overview of the application itself and give brief description of menus and submenus items, cases when you would use this or that... thank you Sqltresbelle.
Thank you so much for your kind comment Francis :) .. I recently made a video on the interface. I think it covers some of the areas and may be a helpful starter: ruclips.net/video/iSsQVSXfFck/видео.html
Thanks for your guide. Could you also provide some preparation tips of Tableau Professional Certification? I know it might be difficult but there are so few information there to prepare this certification especially visual analytical method. Anyway, thank you for your sharing and keep it up! Great job!
Thank you for your suggestion, Etienne. Absolutely, I will plan to add that video (I was already thinking it may be a good addition, since I covered parts of Desktop Specialist and Associate).
One more question, how do employers value these certificates? I have already done associate test, I am thinking to take the professional test in the near future but 600USD is not cheap. I am wondering is t worth ? Will it open some doors to new job opportunities? Thanks
@@yitianwang4233 Hi Etienne, I was just about to create a video that touches on this topic :) Planning to have it up by next week. It's hard to gauge how different companies value certifications. It won't be equal. I would assume if the company is more on the services or consulting side, and Tableau is one of their core focus, it would have more weight. For other companies, it may or not have any weight. It is unfortunate that some certifications are really expensive and really hard to justify getting especially if it's coming out of your own pocket. Personally I think, while it may not be a deal changer/breaker, certifications may show you have more knowledge and commitment towards that product/specialization. If you are switching careers though, this can be a stepping stone. I think it is always a plus, but your personal profile and projects that showcase your work will weigh more. If you are able to negotiate for your employer to pay for the certification, it is a win-win situation, and you should go for it. Hope this helps! Donabel
Thank you so much for the videos. Can you recommend to us some resources to get more hands-on questions for practicing? I saw some other RUclips videos showing hands on questions harder than what we see in exam guide from Tableau? Also, I noticed in some questions you was using the Ctrl key, and as I know the exam will be done in virtual environment and the Ctrl key won't be working, any thoughts about that?
Hello Ahmed, Thank you so much for leaving your comment. I am hoping to post more questions with walkthroughs. I think Tableau has done a great job with the Certification Guides, and they definitely capture what they are measuring for the exam. What personally helped me was going through the "Skills Measured" section and made sure I did an exercise (or few) per skill they mention. I also would encourage you to consider MakeoverMonday (www.makeovermonday.co.uk/) and WorkoutWednedsay (www.workout-wednesday.com/) I am sure there are a lot of great resources out there with sample questions. I would also recommend that you download some data sets you are interested in and mocking up similar questions. For example, in Kaggle or some country/state/city specific Open Data, and analyze and try to ask some questions that use the features/functionalities that will be tested (for example, New York has a restaurant inspection data set, you can try identifying which month has the most increase in inspection, what is the 12 month average of completed inspections by a certain date/time, etc) I cannot quite remember about the Ctrl key. I thought I was able to use it but I could be wrong. I use Ctrl key mostly to copy pills. If I had trouble with them, I probably just re-did all the calculations for the second copy, or I could have dragged the field to the sidebar and used that instead. (Apologies, it's been a while since I took my certification). I hope this helps, and thank you again for your feedback. Donabel
@@sqlbelle thank you so much. As I saw in multiple videos the Ctrl key doesn’t work during the exam, which this makes the things harder a little bit because I have to format the pills again instead of copy them like how you do in the videos, also in formating the tables for example when use pivot feature I have to select multiple columns that would be challenging as well , only the shift key is working but not all the times the columns that I need to select they are adjacent to each other. 😅
Hi Ahmed, I might have tried to just drag the fields to the side bar so I can avoid re-creating or reformatting them. For the pivot, I use a Shift, and I think that works (or shouldn't have any issues). I definitely would be interested in your feedback once you have completed your certification. All the best! Donabel
Thanks . H.A. I have problems in calculated fields. I mean functions seem to be difficult to me. Which important functions should I learn mostly? What could you recommend to me ?
Sometimes it's hard to recommend functions to learn, because it really depends on the data set you have (and how much you need to derive) and what kinds of questions you need to answer. In my experience though, I think it's helpful to be familiar with some of the following functions: Date Functions - DATEADD, DATEDIFF, DATENAME, DATEPART, YEAR, MONTH, DAY String Functions - LEFT, RIGHT, MID, CONTAINS, STARTSWITH, UPPER, LOWER Number Functions - MIN, MAX, AVG, ZN Logical - CASE, IF/ELSE, IIF, IFNULL These might be a good set to start with. Hope this helps! Donabel
Hi Lilian - I would definitely recommend going through the exam guide and study the topics outlined there. The exam will test you on how well you know Tableau (both theory and practical). Time management is also key - practicing questions that are similar to these hands-on questions, but using different data sets, will be very helpful
Sometimes when creating a calculated field, the calculated field will appear on the underlying data, i.e. View > Data. Sometimes a calculated field does not appear on the underlying data. What determines whether or not a calculated column appears on the underlying data?
That is a great question. From how I understand it and how I have seen it, what's in "View Data" will diff depending on where you pull it from. - The View Data icon from the side bar will show all basic and aggregate calculations. It doesn't show LODs or table calcs. - However if you click on this icon from a mark, it can show both table calc and LOD. Table calc only appears in the "Summary" tab, but fixed LOD appears in both summary and full data. I think it boils down to whether the field can be calculated at the level you're viewing it from - for example since table calcs are dependent on many factors like layout/direction/scope, it cannot be displayed on the side bar's "View Data" icon. I also think this feature improved over time, so I won't be surprised if there are additional incremental improvements as we receive the next updates. Here is an additional reference if it's helpful: help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/inspectdata_viewdata.htm Hope this helps! Donabel
For Q13, I was able to set up the Secondary Calculations Type, % of the total, for the top 10 Sales customers. However, I was not able to add a label of the % total next to the bars. I am not sure how that was done? Thanks!
Hello Aditya - I have copied the pill with the table calculation to label. The shortcut I used is Ctrl+drag on a PC; on a mac it should be cmd+drag. Hope this helps!
Continuous and Discrete (or Green and Blue) from a Tableau perspective is all about how you want to display your data. For example, I often convert a measure - let's say SUM(Sales), into blue or discrete because I want to display it as column of values instead of as a chart with an axis. I walk through a similar example here: ruclips.net/video/LaDOkX1iWp8/видео.html Hope this helps!
I scored 94% on the exam! Thank you for breaking down the questions into understandable parts; your videos were a true asset to my successful score.

Another awesome video Donabel! Thank you. Any plans to do this for the "Certified Tableau Professional"?
Thanks Franco, yes I do. I am doing some additional topics before that though, likely parameters and actions.
Thanku for your videos. It helps a lot. Please do create more videos related to tableau and informatica too
Awesome video. Can you make a walkthrough of Tableau Certified Professional Exam please?
Hello Nishi - for sure, I will plan to add that in the videos!
