Moving the cow (4) - she conks out red hot!!

  • Many vehicles of the marvellous Sydney Bus Museum collection are rarely seen and heard running.
The mass move-out and re-arrangement at Leichhardt depot - the new home of the SBM - of 9 June 2012 afforded me a rare chance to photograph and film vehicles otherwise only seen static previously.
Again we see Scott's valiant attempts to move this incredibly cantankerous old cow of a semi-trailer bus. Getting very hot, belching vile petrol fumes into the cab, the vile thing stopped dead at the end of this film at which point Scott shouts at it "f*ck you" and, to be honest, I don't blame him!
At this point water was added to the radiator, as it smelled rather warm, whereupon the entire cab and front end disappeared within a cloud of steam. It was then left to cool down for a good time, before it was successfully reversed into its most awkward new parking place. A totally evil bitch of a bus - a cow in every possible respect!!
Grateful thanks to friends at the Sydney Bus Museum who kindly allowed me to come along to photograph and film these rare gems from their wonderful collection being moved, some for the first time in many years. My aim is to raise awareness of this priceless collection and by so doing, to contribute to the future wellbeing and longevity of this uniquely large collection of mostly 'ex-pat' UK chassis that have made Australia their home.

There used to be semi trailer double decker buses in Calcutta in the 1970s and 1980s. Since they worked on a single route, L 9, they were called L9 or three storied buses. The power was from a Leyland derived 6 cylinder diesel. But they were surprisingly agile for their size inspite of having a manual 5+1 gear transmission and manual steering.

Thank You for putting these videos up. It's bought back a heap of memories. I travelled from my home town of Nambucca Heads to Macksville Convent School and back, everyday from 1961 (age 5)on, because the majority of kids were the older kids that went to the adjacent High School, I was allowed to travel up front behind the drivers (George Clements) seat and operate the "Hand Signaller"

What do you do when you have to back up? You don't get yourself into that predicament. Actually I would like to see a set of West Coast mirrors on this on this otherwise very nice bus.

Fascinating, I 've never seen an artic bus like that before (ignoring the dreadful bendy buses). That rattle sounds well-nigh terminal. Do you know if they got her fixed?

Honestly, from the description & then the sounds coming from the engine toward the end, I think these knuckleheads were running it without any coolant. Probably never bothered to check. Now that engine is likely close to shot. Damn lousy way to treat a museum piece.

apparently the truck is a rebodied white m3a1 so it should be pretty easy to source a spare engine if need be

I'm so sorry you found the sight of one of the rarest buses in the world, which rarely is moved, so boring.
Kindly view channels you like rather than leaving unwarranted and unwelcome comments on mine.

Sorry John but it would have been good to know what you were trying to do with your artic-bus.
what was unwarranted about my comment..we're all entitled to an opinion and that was mine .Your very touchy about things. YES it's a fabulus vehical BUT tell us what your trying to do with it.
There you go mate have a cup of tea and calm down.
