The renal structure, the characteristics of the cortex and the medulla, and what the renal circulation is like is briefly described: renal artery, afferent and efferent arterioles, glomerular and peritubular capillaries, etc. The characteristics of the filtration membrane are described that give it the recognized selectivity for size (fenestrated glomerular capillary, podocytes with pedicels, etc.) and for charges (nephrin and podocin proteins give a negative charge). The Starling forces involved in filtration are explained, such as the hydrostatic capillary and Bowman pressures and the oncotic or colloidosmotic capillary and Bowman pressures. In this context, the vital importance of capillary pressure as a determinant of net filtration pressure is highlighted. Finally, the concepts of glomerular filtration volume and filtration fraction are developed.
