I fish the Chattanooga River a lot and I have found natural baits work best for catfish in the winter. My go to is shad and Skip Jack (cut). In THIS river, almost ALL fish is legal to use. EVERYTHING is legal but dynamite!😎 Love you man, especially when you agree with me on catfishing !❤
Fishing for Blue Cats on the James River in VA has been going great in the cold weather so far. Eel has been the go to bait and nightcrawlers still working well.
I don't believe a hungry bluecat will swim up to a piece of cut skipjack and sayyyy oh hell no this isn't shad, doesn't this guy know it's winter.. Put it in a hungry cats face and he's going to eat
Caught a 11lb channel on a shaky head stick bait last week. Bass were slow so I put a grub on my light rod and caught a few small sunfish. Caught a few 5s and about 4 2-3lbers I took home for the tacos. I’m on Lanier, best bites were trolling around creeks 10-20ft deep. In a kayak with 8lb line that big channel pulled me around for a minute.
Great video. I have to ask you a question. I was at Lake Wylie back in October and I went into the bathroom and on the way out I saw a Dietor Melhorn fishing sticker on the door. How did that get there??😂😅
It's been a grind. I do bush hooks. In Florida I can't use live or dead bluegill on a bush hook...but I can use them on a rod...stupid law. This area of Florida doesn’t have shad even though we have a surprising amount of shallow freshwater and little deep water. Few places get deeper than 15 feet...most places are under 8 ft deep. As such, saltwater species (i.e., croaker, pinfish, alewives, crabs, and mullet) make up a considerable amount of the freshwater fish diet and these prey species are now moving to deeper saltwater for warmth. Crappie (speckled perch) are also extremely rare here. I spent two days on the water only to catch 3 catfish and a gar. It's rough. I am hoping that the cold will turn on the invasive catfish bite...like the blues. It seems, over the past 30+ years I have seen a steady decline in fish populations. The FWC does nothing and they refuse to stock or allow habitat to be deployed (i.e., breeding condos, hollowed logs, tubing). After a while...it just gets depressing.
@@DieterMelhorna large portion of it is rapid growth. Florida is the third largest state. The average resident in my county only stays here 2 years before moving but growth is almost double each year. Acres of forests and swamps are being bulldozed for neighborhoods. The waters are full of silt from these developments. FWCC is only worried about sturgeon.
I caught 9 Sunday on a cold day. I used liver balls with the santee catfish rig you suggested in your other video. Check out my short to see the sizes on them
I keep a rod with nothing more than a weight tied to the end, and a slip bobber. If the bobber stands on end, the weight hasn't hit bottom. The water is deeper than the rig. If the bobber tips sideways, than you are set too deep for the rig.
*How to Catch Catfish in the Winter* I'm not a cat expert, but I'm thinking you catch those ugly slimy bastards the same way as you do in the spring, summer, and fall.

Love your videos💚
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I love winter fishing. So much so I'm working on building a shanty boat to fish from so I can stay out longer.
Been waiting on this video….
Thanks for watching and hopefully it gives you some needed info!!
Up here we fish for them with tip-ups through the ice in the northern part of the lake.
In AL, the only game fish you can use for bait is bluegill-type bream caught on line and hook.
They started stocking blue cats here on the upper ohio a few years ago. Been kinda slow taking hold.

Are you going to Catcon?????
Coming in from Modesto, California...Keep those poles bent.

Sounds like an over harvest issue taking place…sad.

What fish do you catch that aren’t slimy?
@@superdeerhunting Anything without whiskers is nowhere near as slimy as those ugly water bugs or oozes as much slime too.
