Man it's been real cold here in Central California overnight lows around 37 with afternoon hi as low as 61 and these monster 2lbs catfish out here have stopped biting already lol. Stay warm Dieter keep up the kool videos.
You're finally talking my language, you always come out catching all these fish... This past month of fish dams, Rivers, creeks...the bullheads are biting but I have not caught any other species.. got couple bites yesterday but it's been rough since the start of winter.
Great podcast Dieter, no negative just facts! I am blessed to dock fish at the Charlotte Yacht Club when things get cold. I can usually scratch a few out. A 2 lb channel or a 5 lb blue is great when otherwise I would have been doing nothing on the couch There is one thing I know. If you can get out and fish, then fish.
Ohh ya… went out yesterday morning in layers here in Texas. Should’ve played the Paul Bearers theme song in the background for your video today Dieter it was indeed sad and full of negativity… but I’m off this whole week and my wife has a Honey Do list a mile long so I’m gonna take my chances freezing my petoot off…😂
You are correct we got snow7” then got freezing rain. Believe lake water temperature about to hit 40 this week and more snow Friday. Monday will be above freezing I hope
January has always been pretty good to me. February on Wylie is what i dread😢. One of my best days it was snowing a few years ago hopefully ill be doing that Friday out there.
Seems the channel cats here in NJ don’t hit from end of November to the end of February. My PB did come 2nd week of March, but water temps still in upper 30s/lower 40s at that time I believe
@@DieterMelhornRight now it is 33 degrees water temp at my lake that I fish for Channel cats , carp during spring-fall. And crappie/yellow perch late fall through winter and early spring. Cold stuff. Those channel cats wouldn’t know what to do if the bait was dropped on there head here in the middle of January 😂 Have a good one Dieter 💯👊🏼
WV got hammered the past few days my gutters have 5 inches or more of ice in them , there's proboly close to 10 inches of snow on the roofs , defiantly in winter now . And to top it all off my dryer just quit drying ! Lol so have to fix that now anways good luck on your adventures man
From growing up in Iowa this is why we hunt in the winter, but about now if you wanted to hard water fish in a ice house and catch a fish or catch a beer you can do that and not be miserable in the cold and wind. 😜 Here in southern and mid Michigan they are praying for a good week of super cold and no snow to get things frozen to a safe level. I'm so used to everything including the rivers being frozen over and you might be able to fish below a dam but until everything is frozen solid you will catch ice cubes flowing and they can push you right into the snag. But on the bright side it is reloading season and you can take advantage of the time to replenish you ammo. Stay safe everyone!
Definitely agree, here in Virginia the James and Appomattox river slowed down a lot! caught a few the other day but I won't be going back out for about a week or two smh
I just park the boat and hit the banks in the shallows. The lake I fish on is down in the winter, so there is plenty of bank. Is it better fishing who knows, but I'm still fishing.
I hate to admit it, but I was out fishing near my house in Alabama today and it was dead. The only thing I managed to do is freeze my butt off every time I took it a new place to try. I set up one of those diesel heaters all over amazon on my boat, so when I'm just trolling it's not too bad, but getting the boat up on plane absolutely sux. I tried both chicken and cut bait from the few brim I caught on the side, and even threw out 10 jug lines just to expand my search area even more, and nothing...
Shit fishing was done in Iowa last September pretty much although most of last year in Iowa sucked idk if this year will be any better but we shall see I always have hopes on it being good
In south Louisiana this summer wasn’t that great to much rain but I do fish the winter it just gets really slow that’s to be expected just have to hunt for them I’ll take boat for a 70 mile ride to find a couple but I love it catch or not
Here in Tejas the catfish go CRAZY when it rains but only RIGHT BEFORE/during the first few minutes of a storm. It’s like the pressure drop gets them gorging before the rain hits and it’s more difficult to find food.
im dumb enough to try fishing the mid potomac tomorrow. Hoping to catch the first of the year fish and want to see if these temps will cause some hungry cats to bite on some cut eels
I find here in the Midwest, Lake of the Ozarks and Truman Lake, the cold/snow/ice doesnt kill the catfish, what it does kill though is the shad. We tend to have some big shad kills when it gets cold, especially when it gets cold fast. It does make spring harder to fish because those cats gorge themselves on the dead shad come spring when they start the thaw out and dont hit your bait too frequently.
@@DieterMelhorn I am sure some do but I have not seen any decline of catfish due to cold weather, the fishing is great all year round here. We break ice with out boats to go fishing, it has not been an issue. We get below freezing every year, we get ice usually every year. What I see is a decline in bait fish, mainly shad. I think the biggest killer of Catifsh out here is trot lines when the lake level raises a couple feet in a day, the fish are unable to be harvested and die and Jug lines set within the thermocline can be a big issue too.
Damn you boys are hardcore. I'm live in Missouri and I'm usually done the beginning of November and might start in mid to late March. But my arthritis might have a lot to do with it.
@@ericmuskopf-kl4rf I used to go year round but not as much as I would like any more. I am usually out in late Feb, if above freezing, scouting for spoonbill season and then on the water from March 15th to April 30th with customers, freezing our butts off for the first few weeks of the season.
I did catch a small 6lb channel the other day when it was around 24 degrees little dude didnt put up any fight at all i thought i snagged a tree limb or something but he was hungry !
I'm in Ohio and its been a ton of snow we got 11" and the temperatures will remain in the low 20s with overnight and and early mornings in the below 0 ranges i love to fish but no thanks lol I'll be sitting it out until the temperatures get way warmer

I'll be in a tournament on the Chickahominee river (off the James) on Jan 18. Hoping to catch a big one.
Is fishing Lake Barkley Dam a good idea this time of year?
Winter time I watch videos to learn brush up on knowledge and practice knots I may have alittle trouble with.

I love the way you think, always gotta fish!
Thank you for the information and yes it is hard to fish when it's really cold
I hope the Catfish Conference isn't cold. This will be my first year going. I hope to do some fishing while I'm there!

We’re catching good still on the James in va, snow on the ground and all
Y'all should get hit with some winter precipitation this weekend.
