Seeing Smith’s When I went to Athens my mother asked me to find a small copper shop and get her something from there. I found the street but the shop was closed so I went to the place next door. It was a plumbing shop that had a few copper items for sale on a little table so I chose a couple and took them to this skinny guy at the back of the place who had the scraggliest beard and was smoking a cigarette and looking at me like “Who is this American tourist who just walked into my place??” Held up the items I wanted to buy and he snapped his fingers at another younger guy who spoke English. Haggled with that guy a couple of moments and got both objects - a really cool pepper grinder and a little cream pitcher - for about 20 euros. The younger guy smiled and wrapped them up for me but all the while the older guy is still looking at me with that frown - it was cool! THAT’s the kind of experience I want to have when I travel, seeing the local folks acting like regular local folks and not like a souvenir shop owner who sells touristy stuff. People think I’m crazy for even trying to talk to a local who’s giving you the 1000 yard stare but eventually some of them warm up! What I will say tho is that some of the souvenir shop owners are great people too: I bought a set of worry beads from a woman in Athens who really seemed like she wanted me to buy a set that I liked - they’re onyx, nice deep brown color.
