I also have a Gibson which uses balsa wood in its body . It's a Gibson US 1 custom limited 1987 . It's amazingly light and sounds nice . I'm so happy for you !

i bought one of those in 92..paid 900 bucks, I really liked it, so much I didn't bring it on the road cuz I didn't want it wrecked, but then I sold it a few years later. That bridge isn't on backwards btw it's not a abr-1
Crazy but I’ve had this bare guitar in my closet for nearly 20 years. Just the other day I went to you tube looking to find out what this was. I got it from my brother who adopted my Ibanez destroyer 2 and traded for it. Anyway , turns out I got a 92’ Les Paul studio lite !! Missing bridge , tailpiece , two witch hat knobs , tuners. But has the pickups and pots. Sweet. I now love this thing and plan on bringing it back to life. In my research I found that Jerry Cantrell uses a studio lite like these on the “ WOULD “ video.
I sold my epiphone emperor pro 2 because of the wood choices. There was no valutte and it was starting to twist slightly attention headstock. That guy actually reinforced it. Lol
I have 5 Les Pauls including a '78 Pro Deluxe, a 2010 Goldtop with '57 Classics, and a 2015 Traditional with '59 Tributes. My '97 Studio Lite with 496/500T is resonant (probably from the African Chromyte center and plugs (inserted in the weight relieved spots) and it also rocks.
The date looks from here that it may be 9/24 but the grain kind of messed up the writing of the 2. So, it may be month and day with a worker's initials. That would make more sense. Maybe a measurement of the pickups resistances could help pin down what they match up to. I found this info: stock 500t 14.4k and 496r 8.4k
You have some incredible luck at the pawn shops! With regard to your remarks about build quality, this seems to be a recurring theme on "modestly priced" Gibsons, new and old. At their entry level prices the workmanship typically doesn't coalesce with what I would expect. Seems to be lots of funny stuff with the construction and poor finish work.

My guess is, the person that did the work was an automotive painter. He knew that much.
Mine was $1100 new .
