I remember at around 6 years old Hypno-Disc coming round to my primary school to see. I was an avid robot wars fan and it just seemed to show up unannounced, one of the best days of school for sure!
The OG. I remember watching as a kid, and being scared for any robot entering the ring with this beast. They created an enduring weapon meta, which still exists today. Well done.
Hypnodisc was the first proper spinner in UK robot wars. There had never been a bot on the show capable of dealing out such absolute destruction. That's why the commentator was taken by surprise at the annihilation of Robogeddon and just started laughing hysterically.
I distinctly remember being a big fan of Razer back then, and wondering how a spinner could ever hope to defeat something like Razer. Lost interest in RobotWars shortly after that, as I found spinners (which quickly were taking over the format) to be rather dull.
I laugh because of how useless that thing is... I mean why'd they ever bother, just to get some laughs? but seriously razer is my fav for its put piercing power
Gosh. Coming from just watching robot Wars with bots like Tombstone and Bronco, it's so interesting to see these fairly early versions of the same weapons ^.^ This is wonderful.
For anyone wondering specifically at the control problems Hypno-Disc seemed to suffer in its title fight against Chaos 2, that was mostly incurred in the previous round against Steg-O-Saw-Us. Some of the hard wall impacts had actually caused severe internal damage to the robot which wasn't able to be fixed in time - this was also the source of an almighty grinding noise which the Rose family initially thought was coming from Steg-O-Saw-Us. Thus, within about twenty seconds, Hypno-Disc lost all drive and was a sitting duck for the eventual two-time domestic champions.
Watching it, I was cringing at those noises from hypnodisc. You could really see it struggling to move at some point, they even raise the controller during the fight to try and improve it.
Just goes to show how underrated Steg-O-Saw-Us' run was in Series 3. For a reserve bot that wasn't supposed to be on the televised show, they did incredibly well and with such a fast machine for the time as well (Killerhurtz excluded of course)
The sluggish performance of bots in the first few series was often caused by radio intereference from the pits behind the arena. You can see some of the Roboteers raising their controllers in the booths in an attempt for control. It's a shame that this plagued the show for as long as it did, as I expect it influenced some of the outcomes of fights.
I was only 10 when I first saw Hypno-Disc in action, when I first saw it lay into Robogeddon the way it did I was gobsmacked how bad the damage was. When it lost against Chaos 2 I literally cried when that happened. Then when series 8 came along I was reminded about that grand final when Carbide met Apollo. I wish we saw a rematch between Chaos 2 and Hypno-Disc when it had the srimech, that fight could go either way. However looking back you notice how much has changed since then and the reboot series, and not forgetting how Robogeddon was still functioning at the end of that fight despite the wheels being split and the chassis being warped out of shape.
The rematch that never happened in the Fourth Wars was one of the two greatest fights that never were, and the other was Hypno-Disc v Razer. The thing in common? This brilliant spinning weapon. A pioneer.
It blows my mind just how much technology used in fighting robots has advanced in the past 20 years, imagine what would happen to Hypnodisc if it went up against Typhoon 2 or Carbide, they'd get absolutely decimated!
@ They are in fact way better than old robots. Modern spinners can obliterate robots build from titanium, modern flippers can throw a heavyweight into the ceiling, and modern crushers can puncture through solid steel instead of just plastic and sheets of aluminum.
MatthewXLY - Oh of course that’s a no brained that HD were a driving force behind heavy rotating weapons, and pretty much every flywheel/bar spinner robot will cite them as an influence, all I’m saying is that combat robot tech has come on in leaps and bounds in 20 years, plus engineers are spending far more time, energy and money in building these machines.
I remember first time I saw them in that pits before the fights and I thought they would be interesting and when I saw that first major attack, I was shocked and from then on was a firm Hypno-Disc fan
David Moulds actually made a featherweight of Hypno-Disc named "360". Carbide probably took more inspiration from Sam Smith's featherweight "NST", which is almost identical in design, whereas the color scheme comes from David Moulds' drum spinner "720".
I just realised in the beserk 2 match if you look at the back of the beserk robot you can see some gashes and cuts so hypnodisc did manage to do some damage to them after all.
In the many years of Robot Wars, I think no one has had a greater impact (literally) on Robot Wars or rather the Robot Combat industry than HypnoDisc in terms of weapons development as the OG Horizontal Flywheel user. Jonathan Pearce must be totally impressed when he was commentating in Series 3 and witnessing this for the first time. IMO the best robot and most consistently strong robot not to win a title.
I remember watching this when I was a kid in junior school. I remember seeing hypnodisc and knowing it would be in the final and guessing it would probably be hypnodisc vs chaos 2 or Razor for the final.
SNC2319 yeah the first spinner in the UK, and i think the second version was up to US standards, and we had mauler at the first US robot wars (the original by the way, it was taken to the UK)
Did the perspex in which they stood behind to control their machines block radio waves of something? A lot of people when they were doing this often couldn't even get their war bots to move let alone fight!
Bear in mind that this was before 2.4Ghz radio systems. The radio systems back in the day were much more susceptible to interference. The petrol engines of the house robots, arena lighting, cameras and other recording equipment didn't help with interference. Not only that if the roboteers weren't careful with their controller antennas they could accidentally brush them up against the metal framework of the booths which would cause problems. Another thing to note is that with Evil Weevils team holding their controller high is that they were trying to remedy the control issues which might not have been radio interference, although they were just vainly trying to gain some mobility.
also do not forget, Hypnodisc shredded Matlida to pieces and threatend sirkilalot in season 1-2 multiple times to some kind of "test of strengh" , hypnodisc was the rule back then.
My favourite one… ever… I’m still hoping in a reboot of the original robot wars with some old robots… and as 20 years ago, I will scream only for hypnodisc
I have some suggestions for you: I already suggested Dominator 2 Series 4-6 all fights, and here are some more: Stinger - Series 4 All Fights S3 - Series 5 and 6 All Fights Panic Attack - Series anything from 2-5 Pussycat - Series 4-5 All Fights Barber-Ous - Series 5-7 All Fights Bigger Brother - Series 5 All Fighfs
Phenomenal robot sadly let down by sometimes bad driving which cost them if they’d been more clinical and ruthless they’d won Robot Wars. Series 5 they were unbelievably deadly no one wanted to fight them but there bad driving denied us the fight and final we all wanted them vs Razer, sad it never happened. If they’d had the srimech they’d had more a chance beating Chaos 2 in Series three final.
I reckon razer would win. Hypno disk wasn't very manoeuvrable. Razor would out drive it, get behind and bite into it. Tornado showed juat ramming in razor dosnt work so the spinner would be there only chance of winning.
@@icer1249 I think your right the only way I could see hypnodisc beating razer would be for them to target razers wheels and make them immobile and maybe they get lucky try and damage the beak when it was lowered to be honest the right hit on side of razer could take them out but I’d favour razer I think to be honest but it could go either way the biggest issue they would have had was razer had a very good driver which is the one thing that cost hypnodisc some key fights and arguably a real second chance after series 3 of winning the title.
@Jonty-ky9no exactly. A fight between would of come down to who had the best driver. If the driver of hazard came over and drove hypnodisk that could well put hypno ontop in a fight.
in regards to the whole who would win between Razer and Hypnodisc I say its whoever gets the first blow. as long as Hypnodisc gets the disc up to speed and Razer dont get along the side/rear its them. but if Razer can crush the disc before it gets up to speed or along the side/rear then they have it
not sure if they could crush the disk. 18 kilos is a fairly heavy plate. Other disk spinners got theirs crushed, but I dont think hypno did, and I dont think hypnos disk was the same as the one that got crushed.
I cant stand chaos 2, literally killed the show for me and every fight was more or less, flip them out of arena for win by technicality. Hypno Disk was the better robot and made every fight much more entertaining.
Agreed, the flippers made for easy fights but a bad show. If a higher torque motor didn't put HD over the weight limit, it would've been nigh-unassailable with that SRIMEC bar.
@@jbmr713 That was against Pussycat. Razer and Hypnodisc have never fought each other. They tried to get them to battle in the Extreme series but with nothing but bragging rights at stake, the Razer team didn't see the point wrecking both robots for nothing.

My dream
Wouldn’t happen nowadays, I highly doubt Hypnodisc would pass a DBS check

The OG. I remember watching as a kid, and being scared for any robot entering the ring with this beast. They created an enduring weapon meta, which still exists today. Well done.

Technically blendo & mauler created the spinner meta
The pits went silent whenever it was fighting apparently and it’s the only robot they’d down tools to watch. They were terrified of facing it.

Robogeddon.
The first of many, MANY victims.

My favourite ever robot to compete in Robot Wars.
Same here.
Always loved that intimidating whirring sound and the peices flying! Very exciting combat back in the day!
That Robogeddon fight is a watershed moment in RW. It was pretty much the first fight where a robot was completely and utterly destroyed.
For anyone wondering specifically at the control problems Hypno-Disc seemed to suffer in its title fight against Chaos 2, that was mostly incurred in the previous round against Steg-O-Saw-Us. @ They are in fact way better than old robots. Modern spinners can obliterate robots build from titanium, modern flippers can throw a heavyweight into the ceiling, and modern crushers can puncture through solid steel instead of just plastic and sheets of aluminum.
True, but hypnodisc pioneered the weapon that carbide, typhoon and so many others have aped.

Spinners are great as long as they're up to speed. They are very vulnerable to flippers at low speed.
Hypno Disc, our lord and saviour, defender of robotkind against Robogedden.
