    I feed them when their feeder is empty (if they don't have chicks in nests). They eat everything except barley, but I have chickens so when I'm cleaning the loft, I throw it in compost and they eat it. When they're feeding chicks or if u want to butcher some birds, give them more protein (peas, field peas, soya etc.)

    I had the same issue with the feed. I switched to nutriblend green pellet food- problem solved. A better diet imo and they can’t pick a specific grain. The birds and squab are bigger and healthier. Love the videos keep them coming

    Beautiful color bird you can make a wooden platform with a border place the feeder on it so if they knock the feed out it will land on the base kinda like a planter catching the access water at the bottom but much larger. Ps sand on the pigeon coop floor will help with cleaning and absorbing moisture from poop

    You could use wood pallets it keeps the moisture out I spread it out lashes the last 4 months

    When I was a kid, older fanciers always told me pigeons only need what they can clean up in a few minutes, but I always had too much food sitting around and saw a lot of weight and fat pigeons. In my adult years, I followed the older guy's advice and have had much less excess. This does require 2x day feeding though.

    It looks like you have 4 holes in each bucket. What I think they are doing is when they eat, they thrash their head back and forth causing feed to spill out the holes on ether side. If you tape over two holes opposite each other, that may keep more feed in the bucket. Also put a tray under the bucket such as a large planter bottom, should catch any outside feed. I hope this helps.

      I'll try taping over a couple of holes. I was thinking with the amount of birds we had I didn't want any of them not having enough. But at this point, anything is worth a try. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I tried putting a planter under the bucket to catch the feed but they wound up pooping in it so I removed it. Thanks again.

    Get some quail or chickens to clean all the food up.

    Suggestion, purchase a Ryobe 5gal vacuum at Home Depot scrap the floor then let your vacuum do the rest, second never feed your birds inside the loft it’s a recipe for disaster the feed will get contaminated and your birds will pick it up . Third, if your breeding don’t cross breed try maintaining the same blood line, incidentally try getting tobacco stems for the nests, the Fragrance drives off parasites like, mites, flat fly etc.

    If you are given them some food daily it's better than leaving the whole foods there, if you set a time to go in and drop some food they will appreciate it than leaving the whole foods there and you will see they will become more friendly with you and ended up eating in your hands

    • @stepbystepfarming2686
      @stepbystepfarming2686  2 года назад +1

      Good idea. We'll try that so they can also start eating from our hands. Thx

    they are not eating all the feed because they are not hungry,they are being fussy ,simply a small handful of feed will do two birds ,40 birds =20 handfulls .next day if all feed gone allow a little more next feed . any feed left over next day cut back again,you should be able to walk in and not see any feed on floor ,your birds will be a lot more responsive , and easier on your pocket ,remember,small hand full 2 birds ,best tom

    Give them enough food for each meal only. They will eat anything when hungry but pick through their when their full.

  • @morrisheinersz2005
    @morrisheinersz2005 Год назад

    Do not leave food sitting in coop/feeder. Spend the time to sit there witrh the birds until the pigeons beging to go and have drinks of water. That is the time when you stop feeding. They will finish what has been thrown down and you can stop feeding then. Little more labor, but a lot less waste.

    • @stepbystepfarming2686
      @stepbystepfarming2686  10 месяцев назад

      The best box we have is approximately 12x8. But honestly it's not big enough. If I could do it over again, I'd make them much bigger.

    Please don't throw away the pigeon shit keep it the dry shit somewhere and put it in your garden plants

  • @xiongguysloft9560

    Feed them all they want once a day. Then remove the feed. Leaving food out attracts mice, and mices will cause salmonella, coccidiosis, and other diseases when they pee and poop on the food.

    Hi I wanted to ask a question .
    I am thinking about keeping pigeons for the first time. do this need any kind of vaccines ?
    or other health care or are they pretty simple??
    I have no experience with birds

    • @stepbystepfarming2686
      @stepbystepfarming2686  Год назад +2

      We don't vaccinate or birds. Pigeons are very hardy birds and have endured very cold and hot weather. As long as you keep the coop cleaned they should be ok.

      They are supposed to look like that. They're not like pigeons in the city, they're also raised for meat. They're just bigger
