I have an Acer C720 that I got as refurb for $125 back in 2014. I beat the crap out of that thing, including dropping it down my basement stairs. It was my go to device for something quick to throw in my bag and it worked great.
Last year I upgraded to a Samsung Chromebook Plus and handed the C720 down to my daughter who is now ten. She uses it all the time for web browsing, writing reports, etc. and has no complaints.
Super low end Chrome devices are a great value. You can use them forever without issue.

I have an 11" 720P Samsung 3 Chromebook. I purchased it on sale for about $100 a couple of years ago. I still like it and use it...via the touch pad in a recliner while watching TV or at a table using a mouse. I like the build, size and weight. I can live with the non-touch screen nor IPS and slow speed (I don't muti-task that well). It's paid for and does email, internet, RUclips and music. The less you spend the less buyers remorse that you experience when the new models arrive....I don't plan on updating every 6 months. Thanks for the great videos.

I think people who are on a great salary cannot understand that 300 bucks is not pocket money for a whole bunch of people. To them this is cheap. But you can get even cheaper Chromebooks and Cloudbooks, at least in the UK, maybe look around in your own country for bargains, or buy second hand. With everyone upgrading all the time, you can probably get last year's model for cheap.

We use a mix of iPad, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops. There are too many things that require Windows to abandon that platform. We use iPads for media consumption, as I am doing now. Basic Chromebooks are fantastic for lightweight, long battery life applications where a good keyboard is needed, such as at night classes, but we still keep one by the couch for times when the iPad won’t cut it. Our Windows machines are larger, heavier, and faster and are generally reserved for projects that require Windows.

@@ArchaicCreationsbp I have both an ipad pro 2018 and a chromebook. The ipad is more fun to use but when i need to do a research paper that requires 20-30 chrome tabs, extensions, and maybe one or two extra virtual desktops then a windows machine or a chromebook do a much better job than my ipad pro. Ipads have come a long way but they still cant multitask as good as chromebooks, regular mac laptops, or windows machines. Of course ipads arent meant to do what those machines can do but rather be itself ; which is a great device for portability, battery life, some multitasking, and the apple pencil is amazing for drawing and handwritten notes.

I’ve been using a HP chrome book 11 touch screen for the past year as my main and only computer outside of my tablet. For $199 still being sold where I got it at Walmart. It’s worth it. I’ve done video editing, music engineering, and large file transfers from external hard drives daily at very decent speeds. For the price it’s fast enough. Screen is beautiful. Better than the $1,000 MacBook Air which I’ve owned. Play store and most apps work flawlessly. I bought 2 of them last January for myself and my fiancé. She doesn’t use it like I do but the normal browsing, Netflix, light games and she too loves it.

I recently bought a budget Chromebook, Lenovo 500e 8GB RAM / 64GB storage and love it. Best purchase I've made in recent years when I consider the value proposition being offered by Chrome OS plus some of the new developments in the pipeline.
I've previously been a strong advocate of the apple ecosystem liking my MacBook Pro / MacOS and owning numerous versions of iPhone / iPad from their outset. I especially liked how MacOS / iOS apps integrate across the cloud, and a considerable improvement compared with working with my windows and linux laptops. In recent years I have become a little disenfranchised with Apple, because iOS is beginning to feel like an impediment to work flow with no desktop mode and over complex gestures that can be misinterpreted by the OS. Cost is also an issue, because I feel Apple are beginning to slip behind the competition with regards innovation / technology and the premium build quality alone is no longer sufficient to justify their escalating price hikes, especially with regards options where all DIY upgrade routes being systematically closed off.
I bought a budget Chromebook to put a toe into the Google ecosystem and compare it with the iCloud, and so far I have not been disappointed ... putting aside the odd nuance. My Chromebook is now my go to device over the iPad. I am simply amazed with all things I can run on a budget Intel quad core processor with regards productivity and gaming apps. I love being able to flip from desktop to tablet modes. The Android apps experience has been generally good and mostly comparable with their iOS equivalents. Linux / Crostini also satisfies the geek in me having grown up with UNIX in the 70s and 80s, but also very practical, e.g. LibreOffice prints fine to my network printer (Google ... it just needs audio, hardware accelerated graphics & USB access support and it would be perfect!). I've even used Crossover (WINE) to run a couple of Windows apps on my Chromebook! I am now seriously considering buying the next generation Google Pixelbook to replace my ageing MacBook Pro. Even so, I still feel there is a place for budget Chromebook devices that you can take anywhere, as they are relatively inexpensive to replace if damaged or lost, and the basic set-up / restoration of the replacement device is so easy via the Google cloud.

To my way of thinking--YES! I have a Windows 11" notebook. Very handy. But alas, with only 32 Gb memory, it can hold barely any material, an external SD card is really necessary. Worse news: Updates to Windows quickly uses up the limited memory and so the laptop becomes wonky and almost unusable. There is a work around, to make it work, but it is tricky. Now at almost 5 years old, it still works. I added Chrome OS via thumb drive to make it even more flexible. What Chromebook does is to provide the same small computer but with a different system for Updates that don't destabilize the computer. That is the strength of Chromebook over a small Windows notebook with such limited memory.

I teach grade 5 in a French immersion school (in Canada). We have those acer chrome books for our students (every child in grade 5 & 6 receives on at the beginning of the year for only damage deposit that they can take home and use for school work, online games, internet access, etc.). They are perfectly fine. The kids love the 360 hinge and touch screen. I imagine if it didn’t have those, kids who grew up with iPads would have destroyed those chrome books by now. The batteries last all day, and most of the kids take them home for charging and home use. Kids never complain about the screen being low resolution, the computer being slow or about the trackpad being lower quality. The only real problem with them, for a Canadian context, is that they have US English keyboards and (at least when we bought them) couldn’t be ordered with Canadian multilingual or French Canadian keyboards, which leads to kids typing entire papers in french with no accents (accents are very important in French - a = has but à = to/at for example).
Having said that, I don’t think for elementary students we could ever order laptops without touch screens, because most of my students didn’t know how to use a trackpad at the beginning of the year :/

Previously we have had macs and you can order them directly from Apple (Canadian French is querty layout, French is azerty) or if you are living in Quebec, any store should have them. For my surface, I simply ordered it from Microsoft. But really most windows pcs sold here have the Canadian multilingual standard layout and that words fine.

Wait 380 dollars for a Chromebook with 1366x768 display and a Celeron processor? The 6th generation IPad is a better option with 2400x1500 display, A10 processor for 329 dollars with 32 GB, with this a IPad you can even edit 4k video, something that I doubt that a Chromebook with this processor can do even if there is an app for that, sure there are some trade off like smaller screen and additional peripheral like keyboard and pen, but at the end I think is a better option with a higher quality, Chromebooks are getting more expensive, but they don’t offer too much.

I think the budget sector is probably where even enthusiasts will appreciate a cheap Chromebook. A $200 machine with 4GB of RAM is more than adequate enough to run most of what you'd run on a computer (minus games); having the Google App store and Linux support makes it an extremely versatile machine. I've personally found my Chromebook useful as a second machine, paired with my main rig. A cheap laptop that can VNC or CRD into a more powerful machine over the net is quite the handy thing to have.

As someone who's been disabled since childhood, unable to have a life outside my smalltown Walmart & 3x Dr appts a month, I've spent every day watching youtube & some TV shows & movies on whatever I can get. With me being single & living alone for over 10yrs, forced to work with a $450/month budget after med costs, I am pretty much working with no device budget, and $380 is a huge amount for me. I had gotten a MS Surface Pro 6 as a gift about 8 months ago, and treasured it & hoped it would help me kickstart my corpse of a channel & start editing my vlogs & doing more tech reviews, etc. Sadly, as is my luck, I had to sell it on ebay (only got $500 for a like new no wear or damage on the cover, keyboard, charger, or box, plus a bundle of accessories, with a value of almost $1k) so I could pay my next month's power bill. What I will do in 2 months, I don't know, as I have nothing anywhere near that valuable left, but I'm now seeking a chromebook, laptop, or Chinese 2 in 1 that's under $200 to replace it. I found a used HP Pavilion e15 for $120, a brand new Samsung Chromebook for $180, a brand new HP Stream laptop for $190, and a new Teclast T10 2in1 for $199... I'm so stressed by all the options, especially since I badly need an external SSD or at least HDD of 1TB for all my files, as the old 1TB drive I have is a refurb I got like 8yrs ago!
    Thanks for the tips!

I think Chromebooks like the Spin 11/R11 are great devices and do everything I need from a computer at a good price. They are durable, have good screens, good keyboards and sync very well with Android smartphones. To suggest that they are only suitable for students or children, is in my experience, just not true. I like their low cost and that they are not trying to be a MacBook or whatever. And, how dare other consumers impose their own requirements onto others by suggesting they would be better off with a Windows machine?! Many just want to check emails, browse the web etc...or in my case generate quotes and invoices for my customers. There are apps for everything these days. And actually with Chrome OS there are probably more apps than Microsoft. Whats the point of buying a Windows machine with all its complexity when you have no need for it??? In my experience, and I must stress, for MY requirements, premium laptops, of any kind, are just a waste of my money and are just one more thing to worry about. Truth is, you won't know until you've tried one whether or not it's right for you. Don't listen to others. Try them out for yourself!!!

If you don't like pulling your hair out, don't buy a Windows laptop or a Mac...buy a Chromebook! Here's the main reason: Chromebooks have almost nothing installed on them because almost everything runs off servers. Traditional laptops have applications (Word, Excel, etc...) installed on the HD. Here's the thing - there doesn't seem to be any such thing as a "clean uninstall". Most applications leave behind "garbage" that collects on your hard drive or in your registry or other system files and contributes to the degradation of performance in very little time at all - often less than 1 year depending on how many things you install / uninstall. Both have Mac like build quality; only the top dog PixelBook is better. I guess I would say the C302, but only because of backlit keyboard. Tough choice. I'd dare to say no. In my opinionen CB's peaked with the Toshiba FHD CB 2. At that point in time, they had the best value and unmatched build quality for the price. Since then, the price of CBs has gone up and up without becoming significantly better (due to the chrome os limitations). At the same time, low end windows machines have become much better. Netbooks used to be utter garbage but chips like the N4200 or N5000 finally make them usuable (See the Chuwilapbook SE for 230€). In the mid tier of 500-700 books you have the matebook D and xiaomi notebook air 13.3 (2018) or the pro. Almost Macbook level quality for 1/3 of the price. The market of chromebooks is stale just like wear OS. I follow the subreddit since 2013 and it is just not happening. Google itself is just trying things and then abandoning it (pixel clamshell, pixelbook and soon the pixel slate). For chrome OS to make another push we would need a killer device that is sold really cheaply. Currently and in every price segment, no chromebook is the best device for the masses

I agree. The appeal of chrome book is the price and the trade off is familiarity and ease of use by general computer consumers. For the price of the newer high dollar chrome books I’d probably buy a windows or Mac so I’m not limited in what I can do for the $$.
Example. I have a hard drive full of pictures and videos in a bunch of folders . I want to upload these en mass to google photos. There is not an automatic way of doing this on my chrome book. I have to take it over to my wife’s win laptop to have google do this.

@@bryanmiller476 urgh. Thanks. I can appreciate if they look odd stretched to the screen but on phone size window is a show stopper. I suppose this is better than Windows 10 Tablet app support though.

I think I can reccomend the Lenovo 300e and 500e. Of course the Chromebook-model, the Windows one runs shit of course.

I might as well buy a Chines brand Windows Tablet + keyboard. At least they use Gemini lake Celeron processors. The price for these under-powered nasty screen devices is too high.
