He uses words like "addicted" and phrases like " don't know where to draw the line" and "If you're not mine I'd rather see you burned alive." I read it as touching on the way that his fans take his music, which is by nature very personal, and develop an air of possessiveness about it and him by extension. He does love and appreciate his fans and I do think that comes through in the song, but I also think he's touching on a more nuanced aspect of the artist-fan relationship.

Like yeah, parasocial stuff is something to be aware of these days. But people are so quick to judge teenage girls for their strong feelings. Even if they have some growing up to do expressing those feelings, their humanity and sincerity still mean something. They're still whole human beings who have passion for what they care about. "It's kind of sad how it's not your fault you're living in a madhouse." -> Social media has normalized the way we form these relationships, and even encourage its commodification. Therefore, the young and impressionable often end up being most vulnerable. Think about how it's most often teenage girls who are shamed and criticized for liking idol/boyband groups, streamers, musical artists, etc. when just about anyone can fall victim to a harmful parasocial relationship.
I think what @CrystalxKyuubi is trying to say is that Porter recognizes that this is a problem, but doesn't one-sidedly mock his fans for expecting more out of him than they should, especially his younger fans who are the most susceptible. Instead he recognizes that they are also human, and that their support means a lot to him.

Not only does he not shame, to some extent, he admits his music is still for his fans in the end, and that's a little bit parasocial too. Heck, I think the chorus is a little bit about him too. So instead of shaming, he says he's happy his songs could be there for them, he wishes he could do more, but in absence of that, he wishes them a better life so they don't need to cling to him anymore. What an emotionally intelligent and beautiful person.

Here before this got put on the FC25 soundtrack. Not tryna gatekeep I really hope this album gets more exposure through it because it's amazing
any other long term fans sobbing right now? I remember porter didn't really want his own voice on his tracks without editing and correct me if I'm wrong but I think he dealt with self image struggles. to see him like this is so jarring in the absolute best way. from Language to this is an insane life arc. I'm so proud of him.
Spot on, even on Nurture he admitted on songs like Blossom why he used the filters and turned it off when saying "I love you" to his now wife. To hear him so confidently and unfiltered-ly singing is joy beyond words.
I was damn near a day one fan of Porter early 2011 saw him with Zedd and Skrillex on the Scary Monsters tour and was blown away. Saw him a few more times and then the style changed. I respect his art and talent but I just can't get into what he has done the last like 7-8 years tbh. I got to see a show of his where it was full of the Language album that never got to come out and got erased and I wish we had gotten full releases of that. All that being said I will continue to follow him, listen when new music drops, but I won't be going to any shows anymore unless I happen to be close to one of his rare DJ sets these days.
Sounds like good self growth :) Though, to play devil's advocate, I'm 99% sure there is autotune and such used here as well as who knows what else in terms of plug-ins etc. Not that that is bad or anything of course! :3 I'm glad he's utilizing his voice more often. The effects he puts on his voice in order to sound like a girlbot is super cool.

He went from aggressive EDM to beautiful and nostalgic music style, then now passed on from that to becoming some pop-ish artist I guess lol.
@@jamieagnad1918 I feel like that last part might be a bit oversimplifying this. Listening to this, I'm getting elements of Get Your Wish, Language and even stuff like Everything Goes On, it's definitely very signature Porter (especially that ending) with a pop-punk filter put over it. Making a throwback pop song about mentally reckoning with the obsessive nature of some of his audience in the internet age makes so much sense and still feels v authentic to him.

I feel like many artists get caught in a trap of never feeling free to experiment.
It's pretty clear that Porter is not one of them, having multiple aliases under which he makes different types of must, and even Porter himself, where his albums are so diverse...
I think this is a good thing, even if sometimes new things don't "land" the same way you remember.

He hasn't been since the Spitfire EP. That was the entire point of his break and rebrand. He's one of the few artists who consistently reinvents his style with every major release. Worlds, Nurture, and Virtual Self are all very distinct from one another & I'm sure the next album will be the same way. It's part of what makes coming back to him again and again so exciting.
What “rules” is he breaking here, dont get me wrong i love it but its not some mind bending composition its just good fucking music

I think its more like, he can release pretty much anything and he'd still have people to listen, just because of how many times he's switched his style ig, and thats very freeing for an artist@@wispy893
