Maybe I'm an old fashioned plebeian, but I can't wrap my head around how these elites live their lives. Some might say they are sophisticated, but I find their bed hopping and loose moral compasses debauched and disgusting.
It was a thing that was extremely common amongst the aristocracy. If you never marry for love, just dynasty you take love where you find it. I think that why Diana was as she was. It’s only now that the aristocracy are beginning to marry for love.
Nice to see you back 👍. Enjoyed this chapter and looking forward to the next one. Still can't get my head around how accepting they are about their affairs.......or is it just me 🤷
Me either, makes me grossed out. How you going to kiss your wife/husband knowing where that mouth has been. Sorry that grossed me out as soon as I thought it. 😂
I understand Lord Louis's desire to always make a splash ; His great-grandmother was Queen Victoria and he is also related to most if not all of the royal houses in Europe !! His standards were incredibly grand because that's how he was raised . There most likely was a bit of envy or jealousy among some of his colleagues . After all he was married to the wealthiest woman in England , Edward (David ) Prince of Wales was his best friend. He kept company with heads of states and international celebrities and he was very personable and good-looking !
Thank you Cheere Denise for the latest instalment. Americans must find the behaviour of these people bewildering but us ordinary Brits also find their world totally alien to our reality.
Mountbatten sounds like an anankastic type of personality. Theyre the ones who micromanage, work long hours, live to work, and often screw up because they are more about the process than the product.
Bunny's eldest daughter had huge crush on Louis mountbatten(who was 46 years older than her)and after Edwina died she wanted to marry him, she said if mountbatten had asked her to marry then she would have married him.
Lovely to have you back keeping me company whilst I face uncertainty in hospital in 🇬🇧 I think you read this book with Passion with the big P . Wow what a couple of chapters that are keeping my mind off a scarier future than I had planned for me, my hubs and beautiful daughters . They were never lucky to enjoy each other. Edwina is a hard cold woman .. history repeating itself with Harry and the grifter . I for one look forward to the next chapters of this book .thank you for persevering missed you Cheere. ❤
Just wanted to give you a shout out. I started watching your Mountbatten series, probably right when the first episode came out. But couldn't wait for more. So I've watched and finished both Traitor King and Revenge. Almost done with Spare. I love your take on these books and characters. It is just so relaxing to sit back and listen. Also, love your voices, especially Harry/David. 😄
Okey dokey…The “Gina” who married bunny was DICKIE’S late brother George’s NEICE! This wasn’t some strange girl off the streets who waltzed in and swooped Bunny up. Dickie and Edwina would have known her since her birth in 1919. Her mother was Zia, Nada’s sister. Good grief.
This has been fascinating. The love affairs are so complicated and one wonders how widespread such behaviour was in the English upper classes. Lovers becoming old family friends. Maybe as long as appearances were maintained, nobody rocked the boat.
🎉🎉🎉 Ty! Been waiting for this to resume. Hoping you pick a Prince Philip, Queen Mother or Queen Mary biography next!! Plz keep the British Royalty going. 😊❤
Love your recaps... I binge watch you on a Sunday afternoon... I did laugh out loud, though...as a Brit, I can categorically state that we don't pronounce Gina as in va-gina!! It's most definitely "jeena"....😂
This book is interesting me more now that its not so focused on Edwinas affairs. I did bale, but couldnt stay away as i knew you would make it great. Really enjoying it now.
Cheere Denise, Bill Paley is a legend! He was the founder of CBS and married Babe Paley (the most famous of all Truman Capote’s swans) in 1947. While in London during the war, he also had an affair with Pamela Churchill. He was a serial womaniser, a great match for Edwina. 🤣 Google them. 😊 Pamela Churchill’s life is fascinating, I have two great books on her, I think you’d love them. To start with, I suggest you take a look at the documentary “Churchill’s Girl” here on RUclips. Mind boggling.
Bill Paley was also neighbour of Noel Coward's in Jamaica and invested with him in the Roundhill holiday complex out there. I'm fascinated by the Web of connections!
Boy I could just see my husband consoling me because my boyfriend was getting married. I get that there's a certain type of arrangements that come with these marriages, but I'll never understand rich people.
But you’re looking at it with modern eyes. Aristocrats married for money or prestige and not love, given divorce was as rare as hens teeth and homosexuality illegal people stayed together for all sorts of reasons, rarely love. It’s only really now can aristocrats marry for love.
How funny (and quite random) to hear about Edwina's relationship with Bill Paley who would eventually go on to become president of CBS News. I didn't see that coming - LOL!
Thank you so much!!! You do what you need to do. You are worth waiting for! I am having health issues that keep me still. So I pick one of your playlist and enjoy the stories!
Not to be all sour grapes about your new mic (thank you for getting it!) but it would sound better if you turned down the gain by about 20%. It clips and distorts a bit when your voice gets loud. Thanks for your hard work!
Gore Vidal and his male companion stayed together for about 50 years--without having sex with each other, which is probably how they did it. The Mountbattens sound similar, except they're rarely in the same country.
Just come across some references to Dickie in Noel Coward's diaries. He's very discreet, but Dickie certainly visited Noel's villa in Jamaica without Edwina. Noel's wartime film In Which We Serve was based on Dickie's wartime experience, and he got a lot of technical briefing on naval matters from Dickie.
So... very... weird.... I'm old enough to remember the Mountbattens. I'm Californian though, and we sure never heard anything like this stuff reported in the news !!! My mom (and all the other Presbyterian relatives in Georgia, and Texas!!) would've been completely AGHAST.
Watched one of your videos on the so called documentary on RUclips reviews. Mentioned to watch the videos on Tom Bowers Revenge. Currently watching all 40 videos. Been a long time subscriber to you. Will come back and watch this one after I finish Spare after Revenge. Just a little suggestion, please ask your viewers to subscribe and hit like a lot more or at least at the start and end. Thank you. Love your channel.❤
As you’re interested in military things perhaps one book you’d consider The Last Kaiser & why WW1 happened. And there’s a big connection to the BRF connection of course . I saw the author interviewed recently and it’s a FASCINATING story. Author was Giles Mc something. I eventually succumbed to your Spare Me but even by you I just couldn’t get past the first video. And I started watching the series on the TV show. I don’t know how your numbers were on that one. I’m sure Americans related to it far better than this old Aussie.
What I don’t understand is why are they still married? Is it because in those days it was shameful to be divorced? But their reputations are in tatters do they love each other ? It doesn’t make sense I am confused
I kind of lost interest in this book but only you could make me come back and rethink finishing this book read. You make it tolerable with your commentary and opinions.
Yay! What a welcome surprise after a long week!
Two weeks!
Yes indeed! How lovely 😊
They lived on a morally parallel plain. Totally alien to normal people.

Yeah, the aristos would see that as bourgeois morality, sadly. Different worlds and upbringing I guess!
So happy to have the Mountbattens back. Thank you 😊
Oh hoooray!! Oh joy!! A new episode!!!!

Will you do the house keepers diary written by Wendy Berry ? Its super good
Agree
This sounds interesting
Probably the greatest insight into Charles and Diana’s turbulent marriage by the person who saw it all.
This book has already been reviewed by another RUclipsr, The Vintage Read Show whose review was excellent.
I am such a fan of your channel ❤
Thank you Cheere Denise for the latest instalment. Americans must find the behaviour of these people bewildering but us ordinary Brits also find their world totally alien to our reality.
We don't! Hey! We spawned Megan😢
Bill Paley was a dog too. That upperclass was full of dogs wasn't it? Crazy.
Thanks Cheere! 🙏🏼
Oooh! I’m first! Thank you! I’ve been listening to this book all afternoon!
Lucky you! This is an excellent channel! Thanks Cheere!

Also, SEAC was officially the South East Asia Command. The Save England’s Asia Campaign thing was just a snarky nickname…but well deserved.
Crazy ass rich people.
