      I dunno. I figure it's good he had daughters as Mountbatten was a pedophile for boys. Lord Mountbatten sexually abused Arthur Smythe and 28 others. Smythe sued Mountbatten. His lawyer subpoenaed the Kincora orphanage files where the boys were abused.
      M16 immediately stepped in and classified those files for 100 years!

      @user-tt3jb2do8m 20 дней назад +6

      The same thought entered my head. Also I think back then, in these circles, it was accepted they had affairs. Maybe not the level of Edwina though. I think even Charles and Diana didn't, hence their age gap, her numerous affairs, his continuous one. Until Diana decided, she'd use Charles, to her advantage in the breakup. I think now we are alot more knowledgeable, the reason we have more warmth to Charles, and have accepted Camilla. Even Prince Philip, they say had his liaisons. I mean The Queen, was busy being just that, she couldn't see to him too. But it was obvious their love, commitment, to each other, and duty, overrode everything.

      Armies generally don't bring "spare" formal uniforms, so they probably didn't have dress uniforms to give them. Changi was notorious for being a particularly tough prison. There were many Aussies there.
    Very few survived mainly from starvation from memory. They were skeletal like the death camps the Nazis set up for the Jews.
    And the Japanese torture methods were particularly cruel eg ripping off their fingernails and planting bamboo shoots into their nail beds .😡
    A lot of the freed prisoners across Europe too & the UK couldn’t eat the normal food they’d have eaten at home before the war. It was too rich & they’d vomit let alone what I imagine was a lavish banquet.
    SO INSENSITIVE on so many levels.

    I've been thinking all week about what you said the last episode of Americans who were Anti-British. This must have amazed some of your viewers. "How could Americans not like them?" I remember studying this at the UofC 45 years ago. While Roosevelt and his Generals may have liked individual British people, THEY DESPISED THE EMPIRE AND WATCHING THE ENGLISH LORDING IT OVER A FOURTH OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION.

    • @cheeredenise
      @cheeredenise  20 дней назад +8

      Did that really strike you as odd? I can’t imagine two cultures as different as the Brits and the Americans whose motivations were largely different and who were allies largely to avoid global implosion but for little more WOULD have found much to appreciate in each other.

    • @BackToNature123
      @BackToNature123 20 дней назад +1

      That's really interesting, I hadn't really considered the complexity of our joint and separate histories. With our history and geography lessons at school in England, we really didn't spend much time looking at America's perspective of us as we were so involved elsewhere

    • @bnic9471
      @bnic9471 20 дней назад +1

      @BackToNature123 There is still the "Spirit of `76" left in many Americans' regard for Great Britain and its empire. I was raisd with that attitude. I was even glad _not_ to have any British heritage. But with time, I recognized that American culture is almost wholly derived from the British. I still am gobsmacked over its unforgiving class structure and the snobbery of the aristos, though.

      Yes, I l watched it earlier tonight. 🇦🇺 I’d unsubscribed from her channel not long after just finding The Housekeeper’s Diary which was a fascinating insight into the environment the young Princes grew up in and how the seeds were sown for Harry’s jealousy. How Diana weaponised the children to hurt Charles. As someone famous once said Diana was a loving mother but not a good one.
      I think the subscriber numbers growing went to her head on the back of the book by the housekeeper at Highgrove for 7 years.that SO MANY of us must have recommended to others and she wanted more so hit up people like Taz & Andrew Gold & others with big subscriber numbers.
      Maybe she has “empty nest syndrome “ or needs the money but RUclips keeps putting her down the right hand of my screen.

    I just started following your channel after discovering you and your insightful commentaries the other day -- all very enjoyable. So glad you're looking at The Mountbattens. I thought it was fascinating and, being far too middle class in my tastes and experiences, an occasional jaw-dropper. Andrew Lownie, a lovely man as well as an excellent writer, deserves to have his books shared. I am sure he finds your commentary wonderful. One thought I have for you about the difference between how Edwina was with strangers in need versus her own children is that wealthy, upper class/aristocrats occupied a very different universe where parenting is concerned. Children had all of their needs and wants addressed by nannies and then the staff at boarding school who, generally, did a decent job. That was the norm and of course there were pockets of abuse, some running quite deep. Anyway, Edwina would have likely had no qualms about her own children because they were being well taken care of by the norms of the day, and I don't think that caring for her children the way people like you and I would look after ours was something that even occurred to her. Or to them.

He was met by so many British governmental roadblocks and spent a ton of his own money to secure research material about his subjects. I’ve just watched a VERY interesting interview with the author on the Vintage Read Show channel who I unsubscribed from not long after her fascinating book called The Housekeeper’s Diary which was banned in the UK. Many of us must have recommended it because it’s a fascinating read about the Housekeeper at Highgrove when the Princes were small. SO MANY insights into how the seeds were sown by his mother.
    As someone famous once said Diana was a loving mother but not a good one.
    Then the hostess’sr bigotry came through during doing another book. There’s much more but I’ll leave it there. Needless to say I unsubscribed some time ago.
    RUclips keeps putting her videos in front of me and this time it was part one of an interview with the author of this book and Traitor King & the extreme lengths he had to go through to get information for both books, how he found that there was a “file” on him BUT most interesting was that for this book in particular it was in America he found it not easy but MUCH easier to get information than the UK.
    Highly recommend.
    I’m further in now, talking about the daughters. Mr Lounie, the author, talked about a crowd funding campaign by various individuals, council, university etc to buy these archives from the family and his court cases to get access.

    Cheere, I am loving this book review. Please can you speak a little more slowly. I am missing words and it seems you want to rush the book. ❤
