Patricia's concern about entering into marriage and not wanting to go in with the idea that they'd divorce if it didn't work out already shows so much more maturity than her own parents had.

Hi Cheere, I am so enjoying this book about the Mountbatten. Fascinating couple. Back in the 1965, Dickie was appointed the last Governor of the Isle of Wight UK, where I now live. He was revered and although he did not live here permanently, he visited frequently people flocked to see him. His popularity had a lot to do with his charm. I knew a photographer whose job it was to cover his visits. Dickie made sure he gave him plenty of photo opportunities and addressed him by his first name, Roger. By this time Lord Louis was in his 70s, but still a handsome man and quite conscious of his image. Roger once told me that Dickie was beginning to stoop at the time. Whenever a significant photo of him on his own, as was often the case, was about to be taken, he would stand with his back to the wall and ask the ADC who always accompanied him to push his shoulders back to reduce his slight stoop. Vain till the end, huh? I thought you would enjoy this little character portrait.
His bronze bust in the main square in Newport, capital of the Isle of Wight was unveiled by the then Prince of Wales in the 80s.

by all accounts Queen Elizabeth II was more close to mountbatten than philip was close to mountbatten.
Since childhood Elizabeth used call louis mountbatten uncle Dickie (Dickie is nickname Elizabeth used call by his nickname).
Though Dickie was 2nd cousin of her father she always called him uncle Dickie and as children Elizabeth and Margreat used to visit mountbatten at brodland.
After George VI's death she became more close to mountbatten and considered him as father figure in her life.
Not just Dickie but his daughters also called her Lilibet and Dickie's grand children called her auntie Lilibet.

Lord wavell who was Viceroy before mountbatten had made big blunder.
During world war II India's leader Subhash Chandra boss had created INDIAN national army by convincing many British Indian army man to join it. INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY was supported by Germany and Japan, INA fought against allied forces in burma, Singapore, Andaman island, general public and majority of Indian arm force didn't know about that but after INA lost and lord Wavell decided to make an example out of 3 INA leaders against all advice he opened public case against them and they were executed publicly on red fort, up until this point most people didn't know about INA, after execution, Indian royal navy and army rebelled and with demand of full freedom, many violent protests took places in India.
So clearly he didn't had great relationship with Indian leaders and public.

Being the Viceroy of India was a HUGE deal all through its history. It’s a fascinating topic & wish I knew more than I do. And this was SUCH a turbulent time with the horrors of partition to come.
I have 2 friends on either side of the country who have managed to make sure, and these are probably 2 of the best humans I know in every way, that you & everyone else knew that one of their close ancestors had a high position with the Viceroy . They both came from very moneyed families. One had retained the family fortune the other’s had been frittered away by her parent’s generation.
Both women one of whom I’ve known for 45+ years, retained the gentility, grace & some sort of magic with an aristocratic air. Both can talk to ANYONE about ANYTHING to put people at their ease.
The outward gentility has rubbed off on them but Ive read some books and seen some things, fiction and not & the lifestyle was much like Wallis and David, Edwinas etc And there was a lot of drinking.
Both could swear like troopers too cos they’re Aussie chicks.

Hey Denise, London lad here huge admirer of your channel and videos ❤ you should also read “from a clear blue sky” written by mountbattens grandson about the summer holiday in classybawn castle in Sligo ireland - including and after the terrorist attack on his family and the impact it had on him personally - he lost his identical twin brother aged just 15.
I was lucky enough to know the person who bought the castle from the mountbattens and leased it back to them - until that owners death in the 2010s the interior of the castle was exactly as it had been that day in 1979 - only the tv and the kitchen had been updated - if they’d wanted to film a movie about it it would have been the perfect set because it was exactly as it had been.
The letter here sounds like he’s drunk which was often 😂

I was not prepared to hear about those unconventional views Dickie had towards his own daughters. How strange! He spent so little time with them (maybe that was a good thing), especially during WWII, but it is still not an excuse for such "unfatherly" behavior towards one's own daughters. I wonder how his children felt about their unorthodox relationship with such a distant and weird father? He certainly dabbled in a lot...royalty cosplay, decorated naval officer and post-war work in India that to me seemed to be that of a British diplomat/governmental representative. When the book mentioned the start of Edwina's journey into menopause, all I could think was "Oh Lawd, here we go" - LOL!!! Dickie better buckle up, Buttercup!

Both Pamela and Patricia says that both of them were very close to their father and he wrote them regularly when he wasn't with them and sent them video, photos and gift with letters. They says he was very warm, caring and loving father.
He took great interest in their education and when he was with them he would go to their room at night and would tell them stories wouldn't leave their room until they fall sleep and they also says that they could says and share everything with their father.
They could even disagree and criticised he wouldn't mind that try to improve. He was same with his grandchildren.
On the other hand they described their mother as cold and distance and they often had to walk on egg shell around her because she would take anything personally could get upset easily.

@@krishnavyas313 That's interesting...thanks for sharing that information. To be honest, I lost a lot of respect for Dickie when I watched Andrew Lownie's two-part interview with Shauna, of The Vintage Read. I won't give any spoilers away, because we havent reached that part in the book, but I was disturbed by what Mr. Lownie unearthed in his research for his "The Mountbattens" book.

As an Indian, I was always interested in Mountbattens.
I have watched author's interview on vintage read show and I also have completed this book on audible a year ago.
I am currently reading Mountbatten's youngest daughter Lady Pamela Hicks's book - Daughter of the Empire, my life as Mountbatten.
I mean people are multi-dimensional a criminal can also be loving and devoted father.
I was absolutely disgusted by mountbatten's behaviour with minor boys.
The more I read about previous century's people the more I Thank God that I wasn't alive at that time. Mountbatten was also sexualy compromised by his tutor when he was 12-13 and may be he enjoyed it he was of the era when it was legal to mary 13 years old girl nobody cared about charlie chaplain's wives age or Einstein's perverted behaviour or nobody cared even in 60's when Elvis started dating his 1st wife when she was just 14.
In high society Homosexuality if discrete was acceptable. Not just Mountbatten many High profile people were pedophile.
When read in books, news and articles, how in posh boarding schools, these royals and aristocrats boys sexualy compromised by pedo staff members, and boys having sex with each other with or without consent, no wonder many of them trun out very awful.
I can't digest that It was open secret that Edward VIII and prince george were bisexual but how could Mountbatten hide it very well?
I mean nobody even his enemies said anything about his sexuality while he was still alive or no blackmail from gigolo like they blackmail to prince George and no blackmail from maid like Edward VIII and Dickie's sister in law were blackmail by maid.
Thank God today people don't tolerate that kind of behavior but sadly I have heard stories that even in 1st world country like USA these still happens. In many USA states an adult man can still marry minor girl with her parent's consent.

@@krishnavyas313 Such a great comment! I have nothing against homosexuality if that is a person's personal preference, but I detest when adults target children and minors as sexual predators, especially when the children are made to feel trapped and at the mercy of their abusers. I, too, was disgusted by hearing Andrew Lownie discuss what he learned about Dickie Mountbattens' abuse of young Irish boys who were procured from boys' homes and sent to him to abuse. As for men who are attracted to young girls and teenagers, as you mentioned, it is something that we've seen in many eras over the space of time. More troubling is that in the year 2024, it is still legal for men to marry teenagers in some U.S. states with the consent of the girls' parents. My own great-aunt was married at the age of 14 back in the 1940's. She loved my great-uncle dearly who was 19 at the time of their marriage. They claimed they were childhood sweethearts, but I always thought to myself "what the heck?"...they had to be about 8 or 10 years old when they started to fall in love...they were just babies for goodness sakes!

@@lisalivingston6473 I also have nothing against Homosexuality but I hate pedophile.
I just mentioned Homosexuality because at that Homosexuality was illegal and if common men get caught red handed then they were chemically castrated like Alan Turing, he did so much for Britain and saved millions of life but he was chemically castrated, when they find out about his Homosexuality, and then he committed suicide, but these elite people were untouched. They could do water they wanted, even SA children and can face no consequences.

Noel Coward’d Diaries sound like an interesting read as he’s featured SO often in several of these books.
I just went to X to ask if there was a book he’d recommend or not only to find that he’s advertising the fact that Traitor King is selling for 99p 😂
Then I quickly went to Good Reads to check he hadn’t already written one. No. BUT he’s written Stalin’s Englishman about the spy Burgess & also found he’d written another on American spies.
I’m fascinated by Guy Burgess but it’s probably not to other subscriber’s taste as every channel seems to have more American subscribers than from anywhere else.
The Last Kaiser which I’ve mentioned before would be a good choice imo down the track.

Queen Victoria was distant mother like Edwina and she was also jealous of Her children and her husband Albert's relationship.
Queen Victoria's father had died when she was just 8 months old and her was very strict and care about her lover more than she care about her daughter.
And Edwina's mother died young and her father wasn't that involved.
Both Victoria and Edwina didn't receive any love from parents and became self-centered and narcissist to cope with emotional negligence.
And got Jealous that their children are receiving more love from a parent than they ever did.

It's actually very common. The jealous parent is either a narcissist or was denied a loving relationship with whichever parent matches their spouse's role.

I am so loving this book! I'm finding it endlessly fascinating that Dickie - a minor aristocrat - was on the fringes of the lives of THREE Monarchs (Edward VIII, George VI and our beloved Elizabeth II) playing at times a pivotal role in their reigns. It was almost like he was constantly within reach of the actual Crown without ever really being able to touch it. Cheere, does the book go all the way to the end of Dickies life? (hope I'm not spoiling anything for those not in the know...) 😉

    • @krishnavyas313
      @krishnavyas313 12 дней назад +3

I wouldn't call Mountbatten "a minor aristocrat". He was great grand son of Queen Victoria and was born as HSH prince Louis of battenberg.
His father became Marquess of milford haven and he himself became Earl mountbatten nothing is minor about him.
He was very close to his cousins George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II. He also had great influence over Charles III.
