I love Jess but i don't think he had a redeption because he didn't need it; he was a kid, a sad neglected kid. It is not a redeption arc, it's a healing journey.
Jess is that guy you don't care about in school but then you meet him again 20 years later and turned out better than the whole class. The thing with GG is that the narrative is biased and does not acknowledge it; truth is both Rory and Lorelai were horrible to Jess; everyone talks about his communication issues and he does have them, but do you remember the swann episode? Rory humiliated him with no evidence in front of her grandmother who he was meeting for the first time at her home and Jess was the one to apologize for it, seriously, who would expect for him to tell Rory about him meeting his dad for the first time? She has not made him feel safe enough to share. Liz was presented as a funny gal, but she was a horrible mother, poor kid. Also, on the "assault" scene, i don't consider that as assault; i do agree that Rory wasn't consenting, but he was not forcing himself on her either, nor was he mad at her for not having sex with him, he did not call her in, he just tried to start something and she said no, that's ok, i wish he had stopped sooner, and it is an ackward situation for sure, but "is it ok to touch you" was not a thing in the 2000's, there is always room for nouance, not everything is assault; they made it look like that but after Rory leaves it is very obvious that he just reacted poorly on a crappy situation and knew that Rory did nothing wrong, he then went after her, for which he received a punch from Rory's ex... at the end, i think they stretch the situation to make him a villain but he is not. In fact, the same thing happens with Emily; we see Lorelai be disrespectful, hurting, mocking and dismissive of Emily's feelings, she compares her to war criminals on a regular basis and Emily is always the bad guy. When it comes to love types, Jess is a fearful type. His uprbinging and background caused him to be estranged to the idea of love. The concept is unfamiliar to him, but it is what he wants, but doesn't know how to get it. Even if he does get it or gets feelings for Rory, the idea of keeping it is also estranged to him. He leaves. He says, "I love you" and still leaves because such idea of love is crazy for him. Its like Good Will Hunting. Its not his fault in all the things he's done. I’m rewatching the show. Lorelai acted that way because she saw herself in him. And unlike him, she pushed through it. Particularly because Jesse has a Luke when she would have loved to have at least one adult in her rebellious years to be in her corner. So she rightfully doesn’t feel sorry for him. She wasn’t the most mature at Jesse’s age but she definitely embraced responsibility at his age instead of having this woe is me chip on his shoulder when he’s being offered support.

Yes, but unlike Lorelei Jess really had no one on his side except Luke. Lorelei did have her parents for a while supporting her and Rory for a while. After that she had Mia. Jess’ mom was distant and didn’t give a shit about him.

Jess totally wasn't treated right by the town and yes his mother did failed him even though I'm glad liz got her life together but still she was a horrible mother to him I love how jess evolved in the series
With Lorelai she only wanted Dean for Rory and she knew that Rory was falling for Jess long before Rory did so she never really tried with Jess again. Luke really did his best with Jess but whenever it came to Rory she immediatly was his favorite over Jess and not once did Luke thought Rory hurting Jess. Rory was also not a good girlfriend because she didn't believe Jess when he said he didn't fight Dean but she immediatly believed Dean when he said they didn't fight. You could see from Jess's face that that hurt him and why I believe he didn't tell Rory about his problems because in his eyes she didn't trust him. And who stays friends with an ex right after their break up while knowing it hurts your new boyfriend? In the end I don't want Rory with Jess after how many times she broke his heart and I hope he meets a beautiful woman in Philadelphia and starts a family with her. And Rory can see she messed up and that Jess is the one that got away.
This is late, but you are correct. ASP realized how popular Milo was and decided to make a spinoff for Jess to explore his relationship with his dad. The first season would have been at the same time as S4 of GG. It was called Windward Circle. The studio only ordered half a season and ASP refused to make it unless they guaranteed more episodes, so the pilot is the only episode ever shot. And yes, Jess was failed by pretty much everyone at some point. Even his biggest supporters (Luke and Rory) also let him down at times.
Lorelai was immature. But it got to a point where I couldn’t excuse it anymore from the “well she didn’t finish growing up” thing that a lot of people say. I was able to in the start but it got old. Jess wasn’t a demon like Lorelai or the town did. He was a neglected kid who needed some proper love not someone to “fix” him. It really annoyed me how Liz was portrayed on screen. It made people that hated Jess hate him more because we saw sweet Liz not the awful mother and sister we’ve been told about by Luke and Jess. I think something really good to show the truth behind Liz was when she was there with TJ in stars hollow and like and Jess have the moment outside after she is practically shooting through the roof with excitement, they both agree that it’s crazy. We also then see that the person who’s seen all her relationships for all the the times (I’m talking Jess but yes I know Luke saw the ends of them) tell Luke to not bother trying to stop it because she doesn’t care what he thinks. While I don’t agree with Jess being rude to Luke in this scene, the understanding part of it was that he was angry that everyone was trying to force him to “do the good thing” for his mum, when he’d been let down by her so many times but it had been brushed off as “she’s still your mum”. But the line where he says “she definitly doesnt care what I think” kinda confirms that the writers didn’t just abandon the part of the story where Liz isn’t good to Jess. She’s nice and bubbly with everyone else but screws over those who she loves.
I think jess fits a pda autistic profile and his mum and dad could be nd as well, partially explaining why they aren't bad people but they were unsupported and overwhelmed as parents. Also pda autists are autodidacta and school is worst environment from them. He thrived when he could learn and grow in other environments where he could follow his passions. Lorelai was really condescending to him with her little speech when he first came, presuming she could step into his life, immediately have his trust and guide and advice him. It was disrespectful to him to do that and he felt that and then mirrored that back at her. I think he was very insightful and could smell out smug, self righteousness and mirrored the disrespect right back. When people genuinely try with him he does try back, e.g with Emily. A big reason people don't like him is that he can act like a mirror. Some individuals and institutions don't like what they see in the mirror.
For me - the entire "Jess fiasco" didn't belong with the GG world. Sure much of the town and Lor was quirky but that's about it. They were not the 'bad guy' 'the lone wolf with a chip on his shoulder' type of people. None where close! But Jess's 'character' was too far out there to even 'mesh decently enough' with anyone in the show. Jess has himself to blame and no one else period. Sure his mom didn't help the situation, but there are many guys that rise above it, as well as many guy's whom 'blame everyone else except themselves.' All of that is well before he even gets to Stars Hollow cause he's what? 15 or 16 by then?!? No - everything is on him! Rory herself even points the finger: "Why are you only nice to me?" or something to that effect. He doesn't put forth any effort whatsoever except for Rory! So here's the thing - if he put forth some effort, how would things have developed? I would argue that they would have gone better!
I do definitely agree that if he could rise above mentally feeling like the world was against him, and try, it would have definitely been better for him in starts hollow! I think he does grow and learn that he can make the change in his life, and then that’s when he writes his book and starts growing as a person! Thanks for your thoughts!!
imagine blaming everything that went wrong on a 15/16 year old kid raised by a drug addict flaky mom and a deadbeat dad? like ofcourse jess wasnt this perfect kid, no not at all. but, any kid in his shoes wouldve gone in much darker ways in life and to see jess end up where he is with the childhood he had is commendable. i always judge people based on whether or not they can have empathy for his character, not excusing his mistakes, nope. but, just acknowledging that he was the character who had it worst in the entire show.
@@zumann874 Empathy! The measure of a man. Up until Jess wrote his book, did he have any empathy? Excluding Rory to a degree, he didn't. None for anyone. There are a bazillion different routes we take under any situation; some always lean towards the good, the light, the right... Others go different routes. Sadly I know quite a few guys that grew up in worse situations, most didn't travel the dark path. And for those that did, they eventually found the light as Jess finally did.
I agree that he could have put more effort into everything however at the same time he didn’t feel like there was as point in doing so. He had lost hope in himself because of how everyone gave up on him and believed that he was beyond redemption. (Sorry for such a late reply)
Yes he made decisions. But I wouldn’t put everything on a teenager. Young adult Rory who stole a yacht and got away with a slap on the wrist and community hours while not taking responsibility for her actions or her part in anything is another story.
Yeah finally someone who does NOT like Jess. I mean come on guys, let's be real, just because its Milo doesn't mean the character he's playing isn't problematic
Oh no, I hope I didn’t give that impression! I do like Jess at the end, I just also think he’s got some responsibility in the situation too. At the beginning he really wasn’t my favorite though, so in that case. Yes I wasn’t a fan!
For all the welcome wagons Stars Hollow is known for, basically no one from the town (save Lorelai and Rory) no one tried to help Jess or Luke out

A big reason people don't like him is that he can act like a mirror. Some individuals and institutions don't like what they see in the mirror.
Жаль, что его не посадили в колонию для малолетних преступников после первой же кражи, СХ стал бы лучше.
