Mike Kelley is the best guest critique person. Always has good informative suggestions and sees things I would never even think about except when he says he would like to see a Volvo next door.

Mike’s ‘clairvoyance’ comment is the most important, of the critique! We all need to remember that when hearing critiques.

I was surprised to hear Mike Kelley object to interiors with the color caste sucked out of the white walls; i would have thought he used that technique. The super white walls/de-saturated colors seems the prevailing look that i see in magazine after magazine, and published interiors shots, advertisement work etc . It's a pretty good look.

36:00 I think the lighting is somewhat interesting. Nonetheless, I do agree with Lee about the composition. The composition as is would make more sense to me, if the curtains were opened as it would drag you into the ocean. Now it looks like blown-out highlights. And the lights hanging down the ceiling are so jumbled up. Or is that art?
37:30 Very well spotted, Lee! I actually like Lee critiquing architecture. It's a nice combination with Mike. Lee goes more towards the "perfection" look - as much as I do in my architectural work - while Mike has gone a long road toning it down. Really interesting. And I think both have very valid POVs in this critique.

I want to say about the photo at 20:22. There is a asymmetric balance which is not eassy to manage. So it deserves to be appreciated, in my opinion.

In no way are those trash cans a detriment to the scene nor do they bother me. I'm often bothered by minor details which become a large issue. That shot is perfect and in every way a "5!"

As an old school hobbyist, (started in the late 1970’s), and having recently dipped my toe into making money with photography, I can’t help but wonder about the distinction between the terms available light and so-called natural light. All light is natural. It doesn’t matter what the source is, it’s still natural. I would prefer to see a return to the use of the term available light as available light is what’s there. Whether it’s sunlight, moonlight, or even an artificial source of light that exists because it was constructed there such as street lights or whatever, it is available light, the light that exists at the time of shutter release.

The horizontal and vertical lines of the third image are slightly off (particulary at the far right and the top of the image). I'm shocked that Mike didn't pick up on in... Mike, lift your game buddy, not knowing that an image of a kitchen that you are critiquing is literally right in front of you is one thing, but not noticing that an image of a kitchen is out by 2mm is unforgivable!

It's not that the exterior view is pasted in, but a technique called flambient (flash ambient blend) where a special shot is taken to overexpose the interior, exposing the exterior properly, then a simple exposure blending is done in Photoshop to take out the overexposed interior, leaving a nicely exposed exterior window view. Taken to extremes it can look unnatural, but if the exterior view is part of the marketing, it serves the purpose of the imagery, which is selling the space.

I dislike these photo critiques intensely. And I find myself liking Michael Kelly less and less and less. What all these photographers did, is what they did in the situation they worked with. We could easily critique your photos, Michael. But who cares? I had an older photographer friend years ago. He would never fail to critique something in a shot, showing no interest in the situation when the photo was taken. He really doesn't have any friend's left.

Peoplo submit their images of their free will. And everything every single one of the people who did so, did it because they want to improve. If someone can't deal with criticism then they hardly will improve. I can agree there is ways of conveying said critiques, but in any way, shape or form, has Mike or Lee been disrespectful. You can often hear him say that he doesn't know in which situation the person was in, but IF possible he would do certain things to improve it. It happened several times during this critique. If you didn't hear it, then that is on you.
