Me too! In the demo version, she calls him "Frankie Valli" like she was fully ready to resurrect the real guy to serve her creative vision. they got a pretty good replacement.
@Trinity Gilreath It really didn't look like it. Also, Rose's Turn was referenced by After Everything I've Done For You (lights for name, red dress, empty stage[?]).
Random Stranger It was more music than visual but also part of the joke was that its supposed to be a reprise of the song (Though it eventually gets a Broadway Revival)
Let's Have Intercourse is one of the most obvious yet one of the best references! At first i thought it was a meh song but I now die laughing when I hear it 😂
And the attribution to "Alfie" is 100% accurate. Lyrically, rhythmically, harmonically, it's clearly a direct stencil -- and both hilarious and touching, like so many of the songs.
Ngl, the talking part goes harder than it's allowed to do "Seriously, Patrick. Was I sick the day in school where they taught you to be a normal person? It just feels like there's something fundamental I'm missing out on. Like, is there an instruction manual? You get what I'm saying, Patrick? It just, it just feels like everyone is in this cabal of normal people, and they're all laughing at me like I'm the jester in my own Truman Show. Patrick, tell me what the secret is. Is there a manual? Do you have a manual? I know you have a manual, Patrick! I know it's in your trunk, Patrick! "
Couldn't agree more! I had forgotten this song from my forst watch, and I was like: That song is so brilliant (lyrics and melody) how did I forget it?? 😊
I think these videos are great but the one thing they're missing is when they musically reference an entire genre or style of music - like "Greg's Drinking Song" is definitely an homage to classic Irish tavern chants or "Who's the New Guy" since it's a traditional MT expository song
Yeah, "Who's the New Guy" is hard to handle in a comparison like this, because it's really a wink at the audience breaking through the fourth wall (acknowledging that this is a TV series), and not an homage to a particular genre of song.
I have to make an argument that “You Go First” is definitely referencing “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion as well. It’s clearly pulling from “Total Eclipse of the Heart” later, with the dancer and everything, but musically it even sounds a lot like “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.”
Siskin I mean, okay, but musically it‘s specifically like It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, and the beginning of the video is clearly following that video. Then segues into Total Eclipse of the Heart. Which while both Steinman, it certainly doesn’t sound/look like Air Supply or Barry Manilow. It’s 80s power ballads, much like Lost in the Woods from Frozen II, or You Snuck Your Way Right Into My Heart by Love Händel.
Jillyanne Ann It’s 80s power ballads in general, but the most Heart-like thing is really the hair. But it’s not like Bonnie Tyler’s hair wasn’t a mile high. 😛
You did an incredible job. As did the creators of the show, of course! I nearly spit out my food at the very jarring transition from Tell Me I'm Okay, Patrick to What a Rush to Be A Bride LMAO.
Listening to Santa Ana Winds for the first time got a Dion song I didn't know I knew stuck in my head. I'm pretty sure they're my favorite character in the show (with Maya as a close second)
In the episode where Rebecca has to care for Paula's son, there is a reference to the Who's Tommy (turned to a musical by Ken Russell) when she said "Tommy can you hear me ? Tommy can you see me ?" It's not in a song but I loved seeing this
Really a missed opportunity not using Fountains of Wayne in the "Ping Pong Girl" section. Great videos ; would love to see them for seasons three and four!
I may be crazy, but I feel like Maybe This Dream is melodically similar to Maybe from Next to Normal. Like, visually it’s fully Sleeping Beauty, but “Maybe this dream won’t be like the last” and “Maybe my last lucid moment has passed” are too similar for me not to think it’s a reference, haha.
I really thought 'tapped that ass' was a reference to 'wash that man right out of my hair' as well, seeing as rebecca said something along those lines in the dialogue just before this song
REBECCA: i’m just a girl in love love kernels the math of love triangles make makeover so maternal tell me i’m okay patrick PAULA: maybe this dream GREG: greg’s drinking song it was a shit show JOSH: ping pong girl thought bubbles duh HEATHER: stuck in the bathroom NATHANIEL: let’s have intercourse DARRYL: you’re my best friend man nap GROUP SONGS: triceratops ballet friendtopia who’s the new guy? I realise this is just splitting hairs because I'm way to into alt rock from that era but Ping Pong Girl seems to be riffing more in pop punk specifically than general alt rock, which makes sense cause bowling for soup is also pop punk. Great video!
It's so much fun to see how similar some of these are! Though a few aren't very precise, like for example I think What A Rush To Be A Bride is more inspired by thrash metal than bands like Slipknot.
Uh, pretty sure Greg's drinking song was parodying Irish drinking songs and not the Percy Jackson song that sounds nothing like that??? If anything, use Another Irish Drinking Song- a song which parodies them.
Love it, only note is that I always thought “We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now” was parodying “Just the Two of Us” by Grover Washington and Bill Withers
i really like these videos,, but i think "you're my best friend and i know im not yours" is kinda inspired by cheesy ukulele songs in general, i don't see the dodie connection except for the ukulele. (love dodie tho)

Super cool! I'd argue 'Greg's Drinking Song' is more of a parody of Irish folk music though.
To be fair, they both are parodies of Irish folk music!
But any attention the Lightning Thief Musical gets is a win in my book.
It’s almost identical to Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A’ Changing’
Yeah it's def not a Lightning Thief reference, it's pure Irish folk
Definitely
I was thinking Shane McGowan.
I love that the guy who sang Santa Ana Winds
was actually in the Jersey Boys musical.
Me too! In the demo version, she calls him "Frankie Valli" like she was fully ready to resurrect the real guy to serve her creative vision. they got a pretty good replacement.
That was one of the show's best fourth wall breaks.
Watching this a third time I just realized George's Turn isn't here. Poor guy was really ignored lol
DAMN IT.
Also, what's that a reference to?
@Trinity Gilreath It really didn't look like it.
Also, Rose's Turn was referenced by After Everything I've Done For You (lights for name, red dress, empty stage[?]).
Random Stranger It was more music than visual but also part of the joke was that its supposed to be a reprise of the song (Though it eventually gets a Broadway Revival)
Poor Glenn
@@randomstranger623 i think its mr cellophane right? just the vibe ig
So, at least once a season, Paula sings an animated character's song...
Like a cartoon raccoon sidekick might do
😆😄
Let's Have Intercourse is one of the most obvious yet one of the best references! At first i thought it was a meh song but I now die laughing when I hear it 😂
Now I die everytime the radio plays thinking out loud
"Tell Me I'm OK, Patrick" is a gorgeous song, even though it's also hilarious
And the attribution to "Alfie" is 100% accurate. Lyrically, rhythmically, harmonically, it's clearly a direct stencil -- and both hilarious and touching, like so many of the songs.

I feel like it's cheating to say remember that we suffered is a reference to another song by Rachel Bloom.
Remember that we suffered is actually a reference to ALL FOLK JEWISH MUSIC
@@MarianaBandarra no duh. Klezmer music if you want to be more specific
Yeah it’s a cop out
Have you heard "Think about all the dead Jews" though? (note: I don't know Klezmer music, so if they all have the same, or similar tune then my bad)
No but it's literally just a newer version of her old song, listen to it
i got the moses supposes reference from we tapped that ass, but i’m so delighted to learn they were even wearing the same colors!!!
I would argue "Who's the New Guy" is a reference to Legally Blonde's "Is He Gay or European" - the melody also has some references there
"Tapped that ass" is extra brilliant when you focus on the singing in the rain clip and listen to the song.
they tapped guy's ass 🤭😂😂😂
I really love that Rachel referenced herself in Remember that we suffered, it's literally the same rythm and tune
I think it's just an emprovement of an old Rachel song that she had and fit the concept and not a plug of her own music
Oh I didn't know! Thanks for the info! 😄😊
I flipped out at "Dodie Clark's songs", I love her, ahhh
Shitshow was also definitely a nod to Chrous Line's "What I Did For Love"
YOU ARE SO RIGHT HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THAT
"What a rush to be a bride" is very Chop Suey
i never realized the Dodie reference and now im incredibly happy
i almost forgot how amazingly amazing this show is
Who’s the new guy is definitely Gay or European from Legally Blonde. If not an earlier reference.
We'll never have problems again is so much Soul Train and Donny and Marie it's a 70s sunshine explosion
Heather literally says she is gonna "soul train" her way out
I have to make an argument that “You Go First” is definitely referencing “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion as well. It’s clearly pulling from “Total Eclipse of the Heart” later, with the dancer and everything, but musically it even sounds a lot like “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.”
It's a Jim Steinman reference
I was thinking it was referencing Heart power ballads.
Siskin I mean, okay, but musically it‘s specifically like It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, and the beginning of the video is clearly following that video. Then segues into Total Eclipse of the Heart. Really really different than the Celine song
Yay! I'm amazed by how well researched your videos are. I didn't even notice de Marina reference in Love Kernels.
Trapped in a Closet is one of the weirdest songs I’ve ever heard I love that Stuck in the Bathroom was making fun of/referencing it 😂😂👏🏻
Listen I am an enormous Dodie fan but just because he sang a cute ukulele song did not mean he was referencing her, she didn’t invent that genre 😂
You did an incredible job. As did the creators of the show, of course! I nearly spit out my food at the very jarring transition from Tell Me I'm Okay, Patrick to What a Rush to Be A Bride LMAO.
Oh, I miss Galavant!
Santa Ana Winds is one of the best songs in season 2 ngl
I love that you put this together! Thanks! Agree with @DerpyBat who pointed out Greg's Drinking Song is 100% Irish folk drinking songs
Still laughing at Ping Pong Girl. So perfectly done!
Listening to Santa Ana Winds for the first time got a Dion song I didn't know I knew stuck in my head. I'm pretty sure they're my favorite character in the show (with Maya as a close second)
I got so happy when I saw Marina and Dodie
In the episode where Rebecca has to care for Paula's son, there is a reference to the Who's Tommy (turned to a musical by Ken Russell) when she said "Tommy can you hear me ? Tommy can you see me ?" It's not in a song but I loved seeing this
I don't think You're My Best Friend is a reference to Dodie so much as it's just a general reference to ukulele music
Tell me I’m ok Patrick definitely is Fairy Godmother’s wedding concert from Shrek 2. The dress, piano exact the same
Amazing. Thank you for putting these references together. i am looking some of the source material up.
Really a missed opportunity not using Fountains of Wayne in the "Ping Pong Girl" section. Great videos ; would love to see them for seasons three and four!
I DEFINITELY HEARD THE LINK BETWEEN THE CAMPFIRE SONG AND GREG'S DRINKING SONG, but i thought it was just me!!! this is awesome
OMG MARINA! I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT
SAME
Soo Good!! I love rachel bloom so Much!
I really thought 'tapped that ass' was a reference to 'wash that man right out of my hair' as well, seeing as rebecca said something along those lines in the dialogue just before this song
Nice! I think that Santa Ana Wind comes from Be My Baby by the Ronettes!
Great video, again! Thanx!!!
Isn't that video of Paul Anka actually Frank Sinatra??
Great job on the seasons 1 and 2 videos! Love these videos!

this is really cool. thanks for taking the time to make it!
Loved your vids
Just finished the show
"tell me i'm okay" always had a heavy "send in the clowns" vibe to me
thanks again ♥
Greg and Josh's shirt colors even match the Moses Supposes clips!
I'm in love with Santa Ana Winds Guy.
Man these are so good. Thank you for this!
Are you going to do all seasons? These are amazing!!!

Btw: RIP Roxette

BLAM! Thanks for the great video!
I am loving these vidoes.
I always saw Santa Ana Winds as a Jersey Boys parody
jersey boys is a jukebox musical based on the four seasons and that genre, so it's kind of the same thing
oof i felt like stuck in the bathroom song was the drive-thru song tbh
The Weird Al one? It's also a parody of Trapped in the Closet
It's so much fun to see how similar some of these are! Though a few aren't very precise, like for example I think What A Rush To Be A Bride is more inspired by thrash metal than bands like Slipknot.

Gotta love how trapped in the closet, became stuck in the bathroom
I think Maybe This Dream reminds me more of Violet's fantasy in the 9 to 5 Musical

How is Darrell playing the ukulele related to Dodie?
"remember that we suffered" is really any jew Klezmer
I'm a simple stan, i see marina and i scream

OMG i missed Galavant 😍😍😍
Don’t forget the iconic: SHUT UP HEATHER
Is that confirmed that Who's the new guy is a reference to Galavant?
I think "Where's Rebecca Bunch" was inspired by Galavant and not "Who's the new guy"!
The beginning of Love Kernels is definitely taken from miss Swifts I knew your were trouble music video

I realized (yeah it's me agaaain - in Wind's voice) Duh has a really, really similar sound with Light It Up by Major Lazer. It's like the same beat.
How can you talk about You go First without mentioning Heart? It's such a note-perfect pastiche, they even do the hair!
Love these videos :) I think 'What a Rush to Be a Bride' is a Hole reference.
omgthecampfiresong
anddodie
Amazing work! I think 'let's have intercourse' also references Dirty Dancing
How is Greg’s Drinking song referring to the Campfire song, that makes no sense lol
I think that You go first sounds a lot like Heart, mainly What about love
Math of Love Triangles is actually a reference to the *original* version of Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend with Marilyn Monroe.
Um, so My Way was sung by Sinatra who you actually showed even though you called him Paul Anka...
At about 1:29 -- That is not Paul Anka, that is Frank Sinatra.

Missing the Tommy can you hear me reference

anyone else notice they said “paul anka” but it was in fact frank sinatra in the video LOL
Some of these were way off. Greg's Drinking Song is in the style of an Irish folk song.
