I just started my PhD in Bioinformatics and Synthetic Biology and have been looking for an appropriate laptop to buy for my project.
Thanks a million, this helped a lot and just in the nick of time. My meeting is tomorrow so relieved 😅

As a final year student of bioinformatics, i know how much important a processor for this study. Recently i upgraded to 13inch mac m1. So good. But we need some more video regarding md simulations, xray crystallography etc topics. Hope these contents also coming very soon
    ..god bless you sir..

should you recommend upgrading the ram from 16 to 32?

  • @Screeeeeeee

Also why even worry with a laptop? You buy a desktop and have expandable screen space by buying more monitors, upgrade processors easily, and expand storage cheaply, since storage is incredibly affordable at the moment (I just purchased a pcie4 M.2 for ~$80

RAM is essential for alignments and assemblies. Getting a large hard drive is important for the stated reasons in the video. Apple is a good direction but you can get something like a Dell XPS with 64GB RAM and 4TB drive for less. If you go that route then you would be installing LINUX (Ubuntu is bioinformatics friendly). I use Apple but am considering the Dell.

Hello. I do bioinformatics work but I use linux in my laptop (dual boot with windows). How come you did not mention RAM? Is this because you're using Mac and MacOS is more efficient in handling RAM or is it because you rely on a server? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Sorry, I have a Dell Windows laptop, 16GB RAM and 4-core processor. Is it enough for you? I've noticed the memory is nearly full after running only this main processes: 1. Edge Browser, 2. Windows explorer, 3. Word. Do you have the same problem? The computer fan is quite stressy. :(

I’m just about to start the UK’s only BSc Bioinformatics course! I’m a degree apprentice working in pharma. Want to get a MacBook for the course, but the new generation is supposed to be announced this month, I will use my company issued Windows machine until I can get one of the new ones.

Oh yes, the new M1x/M2 MacBooks should be coming soon, this month maybe so I would wait a few weeks at this point and see what Apple has for us. Good luck on the course!

@@BaseCalling sure sounds like a plan, the new machines sound like powerhouses! And thanks, I’m looking forward to it :) The course is with ARU in Cambridge - it’s a degree apprenticeship, so we work 4 days a week and then leave 1 day for lectures etc… (hence it’s a part-time course). It’s built on top of a data science programme, but has been adapted for a bioinformatics focus. There’s loads of information on their website! (Won’t let me post the link, but should be easy enough to find on the universities website)
P.S big fan by the way, been watching your videos for ages! Great insight into what the possible paths are after a bachelors.

I have heard that the software for docking are not optimised for m1

yes, I use git-bash. Great product. You can also run terminals in VSCode, which is what I use since Python has become important and/or more efficient for scripting in some cases
