This video is very insightful. I'm on a netgear router with expressvpn which drops after every 30 mins. How do install nordvpn on netgear with other vpn.
This tutorial works like a treat BUT it has a big problem. Maybe some of you also experienced this: Sometimes, the VPN client in the router crashes/looses connection and reveals your true IP adress in the process. This REALLY needs a KILLSWITCH feature. (or maybe there is a setting and I was too dumb to find it)
Hi Jason. Thanks for the information. I followed your instruction word by word. However, in the end the Open VPN under Status tab is showing 'nothing' for Local Address, Remote Address, VPN Client Stat, Clientlog . I am sure I have got correct NordVPN login credentials because I can login to it on my laptop.
I live in UK, my Linksys router is connected to the Virgin Media Hub3 router (which is not in modem mode) by ethernet wire.

Great video. I appreciate you doing this as I was going to set up an old router to NordVPN. My only question is, will I have to change those settings again if I want to connect to another server in another country to access Netflix or to download apps that are country specific. For up to date firmware at Home > Downloads > other Downloads > betas > choose the year > then Month\Year > then your model. They have finally put up a disclaimer ... so do not use the Router Database ... you can brick the router.

Can you do a video on how to set up a PC to run a VPN with a separate router that you can connect to? Only asking because I know most routers on the consumer market have severe hardware limitations. If I knew how to set up an open vpn client on a decently powered Pc than connect that PC to a router and then have all my devices that want encryption to be funneled through that router as opposed to my normal router that would be great!
Here is what I want to do. I have a r7000 router with DD-WRT installed. I want to connect to USA streaming sites with ROKU through a Nord VPN using Wi-Fi. Can I activate the Nord VPN only on the Wi-Fi to feed my Roku, but have the 4 lan ports operate as usual (no vpn)? Thanks

yeah but what if your looking for a server for use on xbox? You have issues with that server then you have do all these steps over again? Too much of a headache.

If I have a dedicated IP address, should I choose the NordVPN server that it will work at or should I still use the closest/less crowded server that the nordVPN provides?

WOW! This video is exactly what I want to do. I just bought the Lynksys WRT 3200ACM router for this very purpose with NordVPN. I don't have a Nord account yet and haven't even taken the router out of the box.
But I don't know a thing about networks or routers or VPN's. Unfortunately, you went so fast, I am sort of afraid to try. I have some variables like my computer is in a different room from my router. Also, I suppose I would need to download DD-WRT to the computer before I switch routers otherwise I won't have a internet connection. Is that correct? Also, you mentioned flashing the router to put the DD-WRT firmware on it. If I haven't set up the router yet, could I just go straight into manual setup on the initial setup?

As you finish status and go to OpenVPN it says Client: WAIT ....... But it appears to be stuck, yet I can make other adjustments and move the scroll bar. Any answers?
What you fail to say...top speed is about 100 , even if your paying for higher...also NORD refuses to configure a Wireguard Client for your router
I love DD-wrt but wifi is very unstable ,I prefer lede as it gets frequent updates and wifi is super stable on the LEDE on my wrt3200acm
How can you remove the dd-wrt program from the router if you decide to go back to factory? I have tried resetting back to factory within in the router and updating to the factory firmware but nothing ever happens. Pushing the reset button on the back also has no change.
Ok so I setup everything just like you did in the video I checked it 4 time so when I go to status it says Client : Reconnecting int_instance

I went through all your steps and it was working in the beginning, but now it won't connect to the server. I do not get the connection succes at the status page. I set back the router to factory settings and went through the setup again. I did it your way and NordVPN's own way, but still nothing.

I've got Nord VPN on my laptop, i've discovered its next to impossible to use any external monitors while in the VPN mode so pretty much anything you wanna watch like netflix has to be watched on the computers own screen, while installing nord on a pc is as easy as pie this is pretty complicated and seems to tie up the main router, i need a solution that involves a blue peter style vpn router, ie this is one i made earlier and works alongside my ISP router so i can use the default internet most of the time

With LZO Comp set at yes, my speed on a fiber network was 35 down. I disables the compression and speed went to 143 down. Thoughts???
I'm not sure why you have remote-random in the config when you've set it up to only use a single server.

Jeson, great video, I recently did this to my Netgear Nighthawk and love it.
DD-WRT firmware with Nord even lets you specify which devices you want to “pass-through” the router without being protected by the VPN.
The default is set to every device, you simply “opt-out” if you choose. This feature is nice if you don’t want to run a dual router setup. I’m happy to see you recommending Nord, too many pluses to list them all. Two most important to me are minimal speed lost and the no log policy. Nord is based out of Panama (outside of the “five-eyes” jurisdictions.

i had all of this working before i moved, then i moved got a new modem and now the router wont connect to the internet. under the status theres no connection. i flashed the router back to factory linksys firmware everything works fine. flash back to ddwrt and it wont connect. what could the difference be between the old modem and my new one? my new one is a tplink ac1750

Deissek there are very good prices on the model under this one that is slightly weaker but prob good enough for most people and its considered more stable than the 3200. The Linksys wrt1800 if you can find them, they might have been resplaner by the 1900ac now. The 1800 has been on sale several times for prices down to 120usd. Ive also seen the 3200 on sale for 180. If i check newegg.com now I can only see diffrent versions of the 1900ac for prices ranging from 100 and up. Don’t know status of ddwrt compatibility though. You could prob get a 1800 ac on ebay for a damn good price though and theyre considered one of the best and most stable for ddwrt fw.

I am using OpenVPN Access Server on a linux VPS as my VPN server and a linksys wrt3200acm running dd-wrt vpn as VPN client.
I have a Netgear R7000 but need to install it as a secondary router. The DD-WRT Firmware I am using is DD-WRT v3.0-r44715 (11/03/20) So the description does not match in some fields. I also need to set the router up as secondary router as my ISP one is (and should remain) as the main one. I would appreciate some guidance setting up the NordVPN as I was not successful and resigned. Anyone can help or knows where I can get support in doing so? Thanks

no and do not follow this guide... there are some differences between this vid and NORDVPN's website if you look up your specific firmware. go to nordvpn's home page then navigate to help > connectivity > router > then look for your firmware. their instruction set is so easy to follow it is seriously "idiot proof." i think they sat down a bunch of 8 year old kids and 70 year old grandmas and asked them to follow the steps. if they could do it, then they posted the instruction set.

followed this method meticulously and it didn't work but in the search for answers I looked into the flashrouters way and wow so much easier and a perfect solution.

I have the exact same router and tried to set it up but connection wasn’t successful. I tried to reset my Linksys to factory settings but the ddwrt firmware couldn’t be deleted. Anyone know a workaround? Can the ddwrt firmware be reinstalled?
Me too, it's a nightmare. I must have rest (10 seconds), done 30-30-30, and installed the Linksys factory firmware, probably around 20 times before it eventually reverted.
