I bought this camera in early 2014 for a trip to Alaska. It was fantastic and rendered many very nice images. It was so impressive that I soon became an Olympus fan and got on the micro 4/3 bandwagon. Today, I am really enjoying my OMD-E5Mii and the versatility it offers, but if you told me that I could only have one camera and one lens, I would instantly chose the Stylus 1. What an outstanding point and shoot. If you find a gently used one, I urge you to try it; I am confident you will be impressed.

Mattias, thank you for bringing this camera to me attention. I finally got one for around US$250 shipped to me here in Japan, where I use it for my version of “street shooting” - snapping quick photos of all the crazy cars and motorbikes that I see driving by while I am walking around. The combination of lens, tracking autofocus, and image stabilization mean that I can get my shots in, even in mid-stride. The small size of the camera means I have it in my jacket or even pants pocket at all times. I prefer shooting with an EVF, and with this one it is so satisfying to paint that green rectangle on a moving vehicle and then feel/hear the camera record several shots as the AF follows it down the road. It was a bit more than I thought I would pay, but you may be entertained to know that the seller mentioned your name when endorsing the camera. I have since found the cost easy to rationalize: this is not just a camera, it is a powerful pocket telescope that records moments. The closest thing to the binoculars that Luke Skywalker was using on Hoth!

Woow, do you live in Japan? I'm moving nex year to Japan. Must be one of the best countries to do street shooting. Anyway, I'm always very careful if there are people. Being a foreigner they may be more understanding but I would never want to have a misunderstanding with a japanese because I would be willing to delete the photo and apologize if any of them felt offended. They will not be candid photos but I always prefer to ask permission. I use, among others, a Pentax Q also influenced by Mattias.

    >Mattias Burling finally did a video about Stylus 1/1s
My life as an Olympus zoom compact advocate is complete.
The almost exclusive (previously seen on XZ-2 albeit in a more awkward manner) multi-fuction lever/ring combo is sweet as honey to use, not to mention how it reminds users of the aperture ring from OM film cameras. In this sense it's even more OM-D than the latest OM-D models, and one-handed-operable! Shame Olympus decided to quit the advanced compact market and didn't make an updated 1" version of it. I mean yes ZS100 is not bad either, but I guess once spoiled by a pocketable 300mm f/2.8 it's hard to head back, plus I quite fancy the top dial that can be used easily with either thumb or index finger. And did I bring up step zoom and adjustable zoom speed? Yes the features seen on latest Olympus M4/3 cameras/lenses can be tracked back this far back! The Stylus 1/1s is also a direct stimulate to the EE-1 dot sight. On par with Fuji X30 (another camera I'd love to see you review

I purchased this camera because of this film.I usually use a fujifilm xt 1,2,or3.
I thought I would try this camera after mattias had recommended it.
I have only had it two weeks but it really is a great camera for when you want something smaller than an xt3 with a large lens.
It's kind of the camera you take with you when you don't want a camera but you can take it just incase there is photo opportunity.I have shot lots of wildlife, birds, aircraft, landscape photos that I would have missed otherwise.
The 300mm reach is really useful when you suddenly see a deer in the distance,a robin land near by or a buzzard fly overhead.
It losses quality if you try to crop in too much, but 300 mm is often enough.
    Thanks Mattias.

You know what my most favourite part of your reviews? The photo showcase. You are the best example of driving a point that almost all cameras (yeah there are a few junk though) are capable of taking "great" images. A lower camera may not give you the ability to take images in harder situations, but most of the times, such a situation is not an ideal photographic situation anyway. And also give you latitude to correct when you messed up, might be useful for professionals, to whom getting a shot is more important than getting a good shot, but for an artist/hobbyist, it is of less use.

Nice video. I'm currently looking for a superzoom compact because my phone, I realized, has such crappy zoom it's frustrating when I went to a concert! So I saw this on one local online store for a very affordable price, and I think it has everything I would want for the price, including tilting LCD, EVF, Wifi, superzoom with constant f2.8 aperture, and it just so happened to have the biggest sensor size for all the cameras I'm considering now for the price range. I'm excited to get this!

Ah man! I've always wanted to get my hands on one! Unfortunately never did.
It did something no other camera really did (except its 1s successor). Still compact, yet somewhat of a large sensor 1/1.7", flexible zoomrange of 10.7x, constant f/2.8 aperture (only really seen in the FZ200 back then and that one was huge), nice grip, popup flash and hotshoe, tilty touchdisplay, EVF, Wi-Fi and a nice set of controls! I have recommended so many people to add it to the list of cameras they were considering as it seemed such a dream camera. They don't make 'em like that anymore... and then they wonder why smartphones are taking over.

I picked one up new in 2014 with the fl600 flash. I still have it, but regret that I don’t get the opportunity to use it.
I use to cover events with heavier Nikon and Canon gear; I began shooting events with the Olympus E-10.
This Stylus 1 is more than I ever needed to work an event; no printing, the photos went straight to a website for viewing.
When I picked it up I was already out of that line of work..:for the most part. But my head was still there, and I recognized the utility of the Stylus 1.
I was a nite-life photographer in NYC for about a decade; the Stylus 1 would have served me well.

For me it is the best compact camera - better handling than Sonys RX 100 xxx series and more sympathic than Canons G xxx. And: the idea of automatic lens hood is a nice, creative thing.

Also Mathias.... the little brother is an excellent alternative, or addition; the Olympus XZ-2! (Successor to the XZ-1) In 2011/12 the XZ-2’s list price was $700. I have one I found at Christmas time 2014/2015 on Amazon at $199 New in the Box! Love that little camera!
Just does a lot of things really well, inclusive of shooting RAW (which the Stylus 1 does too. Right?) without spending the really big bucks! There’s also a Stylus 1S which is the successor to the Stylus 1. The Stylus 1S adds WiFi and some other features, I think.

Another great video Mattias! I recently rediscovered the Samsung Ex1 from 2010 and I´m really enjoying the experience. It has great build, sharp lens, nice colors and it is very cheap. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks for the attention!

Hey Mattias, I bought this camera a few months ago, your video was the first I watched. I found mine for $100. I love it. It's an amazing camera especially for the price I got it. I'm just wondering how you edit your photos? They look like they came from a film camera and I would like to achieve similar results. Great video!

Picked one up for $20. LCD is broken, but everything else is great and it works fine using the EVF. It's a good reminder for me to take time and compose, since I far too often shoot blind, from the hip. My other EVF-only camera is a GH4 that I payed full price for sadly... the LCD got fried when doing a what-the-heck-why-not time-lapse of a sunset and that pretty much killed it for its primary use filming on a gimbal. Still a great camera though. Wish I hadn't YOLO'd that stupid time-lapse :)

I nearly bought one of these when came out but waited a bit and bought an LX100 as a second camera. I loved the LX, but dust issues resulted in a sale. A XT20 second camera later and now I’d like a go at the Stylus 1 after watching this

In another timeline, Olympus made an entire line of this same camera, adding sensors from 1-inch all the way up to medium format. The bodies are exactly the same, just bigger and bigger.

Just came back after hearing out a friend finished complaining about how awfully his a6000 performs as a street photography camera.
I took a peek at my regular gear (Stylus 1s and GX8 with a few primes, usually with the 12mm f/2.0 attached) and suddenly realized why he repeatedly said "you probably won't understand".
A lot of inconvenience of his came from having to regularly adjust settings after powering up, as there was no C mode at all for quick preset access on his camera, meanwhile the two bodies of mine have 2 and 3 respectively. After which I did joke him about getting a Fuji instead―adjusting your camera even before powering up, voila!
Yes I'm aware the Stylus doesn't have advanced auto ISO for manual mode, that's why I set C1 to manual ISO 100 f/6.3 1/250sec and C2 to manual ISO 800 f/3.5 1/50sec which greatly compensate for that drawback. At times the lackluster wide end of Stylus 1/1s lens still makes me regret leaving out my XZ-2, but 12mm f/2.0 neatly fills up that spot in most cases.
I still wish there can be spiritual successors of both Olympus advanced compact lines to this day. Who would be able to reach these two gems? Canon? Panasonic? Or, Olympus itself?

very interesting camera lots of good features but i wouldnt trade my Q for it and i'm still considering getting an MX1 just for the hell of it:-) but i have recently played with a fuji XF10 have you heard of it? if so what are your thoughts about it?

@@gearreallydoesntmatter the xf10 is only $500 here in australia which is cheap money for us (crappy dollar lol) and an mx1 considering exchange rate (in black of course:-) would actually cost me more, ive already put my order in for the ricoh griii hopefully will receive it by july but the xf10 might have enough of a difference about it to seperate it from the ricoh and i'm sure another camera won't go astray lol.

I purchased the Stylus 1 after it was just introduced. Even having paid full price, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I keep looking for a more modern version of this camera, but have not found any that is even remotely close to the quality of optics, compact size, and features. My eyes wander to the shiny, new stuff but there just isn't anything that grabs my interest.

Are you planning to revisit the classic Fujifilm X100? I've heard that Fujifilm's color science before X100S is different due to older processor but it's nicer.
It would be great if it can be verified by you.

@@gearreallydoesntmatter Awesome. Well, I believe X100S is an excellent camera but seems like Fujifilm ditched the Bayer primary color filter which is responsible for so-called magic in the color of the original X100. Not sure why they did it but it must be for a good reason?
