A little late here, saw this video several years ago. Glad I found it again, just picked up a free lawn mower with that exact engine. Going to do the same thing with it for a project I'm planning. thank you for the video. 👍👍
They like to run at high rpm’s without the blade, which works as a flywheel. Maybe try swapping the flywheel out. Seen a lot of these videos. Yet to see one done and out to use. Great job either way 👍
Cheers bud, I have got future plans for the engine once my bobber motorcycle is complete. Im quiet sceptical myself whether it will shift but will be enjoyable either way.
I’ve done this to a 4.5hp Briggs, I cleaned it thoroughly, I changed the gas tank mounted carb to a normal float carb, bolted an oil dipper/flicker to the connecting rod, filled the old oil fill hole with a metal plate and jb weld... looking back it all should have taken about a week, excluding the part where I ordered gaskets and a new carb...
A flat head Briggs would be easier, you still need to file in oil journals for the crank bearings and it will require some form of oil slinger to get the oil around the case.
Yes the engine is still running, Ive not bolted it to anything yet or put it under load, I have got a go kart rear axle, intend to do build once Ive finished the bobber. As for the hole between the valves, I reckon it could do with a smaller aperture, I am getting a-lot of oil thrown up to the valve train, which was my original intention however I think you could get away with a smaller aperture.
well its not an exact science but I used 2/3 of the original oil I drained from the engine. In hindsight I should have used the governor port as an oil level indicator.
I second that and am thinking this video is giving me more inspiration to try sooner than later. Though I'm waiting until I get into the 33XXXX (21HP I forget the engine code offhand) to work on since have two where the one is working great though running away revving due to the governor and the other is a possibly connecting rod rebuild not seized, though I'm not certain of the damage inside the crankcase and wall beneath, that I'd like to beef up to overcome that weak spot where they drilled a hole in the connecting rod unlike the similar design 28XXXX & 31XXXX engine codes design. I'm wondering how similar design the B&S's are compared to as shown? I've not disassembled one yet and inspected in detail to attempt.
@@Tommysmess Thats what the bored out bolt has been installed for, to vent the case. The original vent in the vertical shaft orientation as been sealed as part of the conversion.

WOW. This is actually super neat and a great way to re use these old engines.
Great job on that slinger !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.You just made my life so much more simple Thank You Bud. I take dump stuff and fix for a Hobby

Brilliant sir!!!! Thank you for exploring the unknowns and sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the content
Hope to see this engine in something I'm about to do something similar
Great video Boss,,, truly informative,,,, Thanks Scotty in Alabama 😎
Thank you, glad to hear your enjoying my content across the pond :)
ha, I thought it was going the wrong way but the output shaft is on the other side...DOH! Just need to fab a standard mount flange on bottom.
On my engine I didnt do anything except I took governor out and it ran no problem even at high rpms
Wait so if i have a flathead lawnmower briggs and stratton do i not need to convert anything?

Is the engine still running? Have you put any load on the engine....on a go cart yet? Are you happy with The hole for the valves Thanks nice video

@@dtaylo4517 great. Ty. I was hoping you mentioned the valve hole size to be smaller. Thanks For the feedback
How much oil you put in this engine?
well its not an exact science but I used 2/3 of the original oil I drained from the engine. In hindsight I should have used the governor port as an oil level indicator.
what can I buy the carb mount
Its was custom made for the job, its not to hard to make all you really need is some plate aluminium a drill, hacksaw and some files.
Can u try on a bigger engine, like a 14.5 briggs?
I cant say I've seen a 14.5 Briggs, my only experience has been with the 2/3 hp Briggs.

Where you get that carb mount?
Custom made, really quite simple to make.
How oil go to head??
5:53 oil slinger, throws engine oil up to the head.
@@dtaylo4517 nice
Its all?
Only slinger throws oil to head
that's enough?
Engine still running?
how did you find a clutch to fit the shaft? Mine is a 7/8" shaft with a 3/16" key, I can't find ANYTHING that fits this...
Ive not got that far yet, I have seen other videos with people getting around the issue.
They might make a sleeve for it to go to one inch
Did you order the carb mount part on the internet or did you make it yourself?
Made the carb mount from piece of 10mm aluminium, hole saw, hacksaw and files.
Did you remove the governor?
Yes removed the governor, and tapped the hole to seal with a bolt and quick weld
@@dtaylo4517 Ok. So does it rev higher?
@@getoutmecar2940 I honestly couldn't tell you I found the lawn mower ready for the scrap heap, so I just fired it up and then did the conversion.
You need to take that bolt out of the blow by vent on the valve cover, you will blow a crank seal. Done that before lol
Are you referring to the bored out bolt on the valve cover?
@@dtaylo4517 yes

So would u recommend someone to do this
My videos are just a look into what projects I like to play around with.
500th sub
Much appreciated, now onto the next target :)
How come this is not a more common practice in go-kart mini bike builds as is price effective
Not sure! they possibly don't have the oomph, however I do have a future project lined up because id actually like to test one.
Can't hear louder plz
Kind of hard to make up your mind when you don't know what you want to talk about.... Or what details u plan on speaking.
Sorry don't quite understand??
