Omg the matilda is so cute. You can see her tapping her thumb on the book in the beginning of naughty to count the beats before she comes in. So relatable!

This is a performance from the stage musical which was playing on Broadway at the time this was recorded. The recent Netflix version of Matilda was based on the stage musical but re-adapted to suit the medium of TV and with a completely new cast. The stage musical is no longer playing on Broadway but I believe it's still playing on the West End and sometimes in touring productions.
Someone who’s done Matilda or at least knows the context can you tell me why they have the adults come in near the end? I get that it’s one of the last songs in the show but is that why? Is it to have more voices on stage? It’s always confused me.
If youve seen the new movie, the adults are supposed to represent the older kids, in contrast to the littler kids who are just starting school. Its supposed to make them look scarier
The little kids & Matilda are supposed to be in their first year of school eg. 5 or 6 years old but the role of Matilda is such a massive part and a kid of that age wouldn't be able to do it well enough. So they chose to cast 10 / 11 year olds for Matilda and younger kids. And then they have adults play the older kids who are at the school and it helps to maintain the illusion (when watching it in the theatre at least, not so much on tv with camera doing close ups) because the older "kids" are taller than the younger kids by approximately the right amount even if they're all pretending to be younger than they really are. Also this approach means needing not as many kids in the cast which probably helps the production overall because child labour laws means they need to have multiple kids for each kid role. (At least that's the case in Britain, where this musical started).
