I did that jump in the 70s when it was actually a full lip jump. Landed in about the same place but maybe 10' higher. Never more scared in my life. My ski bud was up there for the first time. He was a Mt Baldy ski patrol guy who'd never skiied Mammoth. Watched a bunch of people do the same thing. Streak, launch and land. He looks at me from 1/2 way up Cornice and says, PUSSIES. Then takes off, went straight to and proceeded to do a perfect layout back flip off it. OMG. Respect.

That often goes badly for many upon losing their composure midair. I think that even surprised the person sending it. I had a similar experience once when I hit a drop without speed checking and it was right under a lift. I missed the transition and landed out on the flat and wiped out hard. I got lots of applause and some hate from the people wearing goofy ski hats.

So, I remember the time some guy come backside out of Patrolman's out of control like that and T-boned me. Left me unconscious for ten minutes. I knew the Patroller who got to me, he worked my shack. He walked me to my car, made sure I was OK. Turns out I had a concussion, I figured that out later. Big air is fine, but I noticed the skier at the run out who had no idea what was coming at him. If I was working on the hill...I would've clipped the dudes ticket. You bump skulls that fast...somebody's gonna get hurt or dead.
