With the frequency of big storms and the Ins companies backing off more and more, it's getting hard to justify owning property on the coast. Hopefully your folks don't get any issues, either way.
My daughter moved to Florida because the grass is greener. I think the water is blue too. She never had to evacuate for anything here, she had to get away from the inlaws. Talk about being underwater again!!!

I work in storm response. My people fully expect this is going cat 4-5 before it potentially grazes the entire gulf coast of FL and hits near the panhandle. The have readings of 888 milliards. They think it's being underestimated. They are already mobilizing people. They are not usually wrong when they get excited. So, get ready

Do you want an exact wind prediction and a survey of the trees around your house in order to accurately predict which ones will fall and which ones might bend but not break? You should get 87mph gusts taking down the 2 trees in your front yard, but leaving approximately 3/4 of your flower bed in tact. Most likely will see some shingle damage, I'd approximate 88 shingles gone. 4.32" inches of rain and a tornado but that will touch down in your neighbors yard, not yours. You'll be OK.

I had a dream last night that it swung further west than expected, picked up more moisture and heat...then looped back toward the east. I am curious, now, to see which track she'll actually take. I'd say this hurricane has about a 60% chance of making landfall in Charlotte Harbor (barrier islands, then into the Harbor) more then going to Tampa especially if it goes closer up the southwest Florida coastline.
Tbh it takes a full on Cat 5 to really shake up most places in Florida (Heaven forbid). However, the potential tidal flooding could be really disruptive if it drifts east and hits near Cat 3. The biggest concern after that, is inland, to the north.

Can you explain why the NHC's hurricane/tropical storm force wind probability maps are looking so insignificant/small? I feel like this hurricane is going to get huge and they are predicting such a tiny little spot on the map of hurricane force wind probability. I just don't understand how that's possible. I am thinking they base the prediction on the storm as it is currently, and if it were not not intensify or something, but my boss is discounting this storm because of these prediction maps that look like it will "barely effect central florida", and will only have hurricane force winds for a very small part out in the middle of the gulf. I disagree entirely, but I just can't explain why those maps look so insignificant (especially the hurricane force winds probability map).
I think the reason hurricane Michael got to a cat 5 was because the contintal shelf is closer there than anywhere else in Florida. Like opel even those it was a fast moving storm went from a cat 1 to a 3 in the last 150 miles before landfall. The big bend area is not as deep as compared to Fort Walton destin and PCB.
