- Between 1992 and 1999, Playmates Toys produced hundreds of 4.5” action figures for the Star Trek franchise encompassing characters from the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager as well as some of the movies.
With their distinctive style and accurate facial sculpts, these figures set a new high watermark for mass produced, licensed products. Rapidly earning the affection of casual fans and hardcore Trekkers alike, the Playmates line of figures coincided with the 1990's boom in Star Trek’s popularity, resulting in plastic depictions of minor characters and variants that are still treasured and collected to this day.
This video offers a loving retrospective on the first couple of years of the line (92-94), with an emphasis on the 4.5” figures only. Rare and rarely seen images have been sourced from private collectors and the deepest recesses of the internet to give fans and collectors the definitive history of the Star Trek Playmates line of action figures.

Easily one of the best toy lines of the 1990s. Really hit the sweet spot between being 'toyetic' enough for kids to have fun, and enough of a likeness to the actors and characters to please older (shall we call us) 'collectors'.
Toyetic is indeed the right word. The line really struck a balance between play value and accuracy to the source material :-)
I bought a Picard from Tapestry at a local Spencer's store in the 90s and sold it for $600 at my first convention. I used the money to buy my first car!
Funnily enough if you had kept your Picard and sold it today, chances are you'd be able to buy a much better car - maybe even two of them! LOL
Great story. Seems like Tapestry Picard is one of the handful of figures from this line to really hold its value. Bored and shopping online, I scored a Dathon with Pog (mint on card) for $20 during one of the lockdowns a couple years back :-)
@@scifizone So, You got me curious and I looked up some lots on ebay. They ranged from $700 to $1100 for the figure, although some of them came with additional items.
My 1996 $600 sale is about $1160 in today's money. So, I did pretty well!
Great episode I remeber my dad getting the STNG enterprise for my birthday and hanging it from ceiling to buying the STNG tricorder and larger data such fond memories of collecting the STNG playmates toys Thankyou for an amazing insight great job 😎👌🏻
I had the Tricorder as a kid too and could regularly be found running scans around my local neighborhood :-)
I remember when I was into these, then Star Wars came along and took over. I still have my playmate figures and would like to sell them off.
This was great! I'm really curious to see part two and hear more about the decline, because it never quite made sense to me. My theory is they kept over-focusing on reproducing the same characters, adding the "Starfleet Academy" line, for example, rather than focusing on new characters/aliens. But I'm excited to hear what happens next. Thanks!
Great video about a very interesting line!
I'm still the proud owner of a Playmates Sisko Emissary mail-away figure.
Cool - I'm still the proud owner of the Tri-Fold Carded Borg figure.....THE HOLY GRAIL of all the Playmates ST figures. >;-)
@@larrysmith8994 Indeed that is a rare find, but as the good Captain is a personal hero of mine, as well as the fact that I came upon the figure in extraordinary circumstances, my figure will forever be one of my most prized possessions 😌
@@MaxMercuryAnonymous - may I assume your figure came from the other side of that STABLED WORMHOLE is how you acquired him(probably the only 'extraordinary circumstances' I would be highly impressed of)? :-P LOL
Congratulations Maxwell, that figure was (and still is) one of the toughest ones to find!
@@larrysmith8994 You're not wrong, Larry. Finding some clear photos of the Tri-Fold Borg is going to be a challenge!
I have all the figures in all the lines released except a few like that rare Thomas Riker and Red Shirt Data. I have 1 of each. I don't have a lot of the accessories or ships..but I do have the Bridge Playset.
My collection started when my eight year old son got a few figures and a transporter for Christmas. I thought they were cool so I bought the first wave and put them in a closet. Well I thought I would just collect figures but when the ships and role playing items came on sale I couldn’t resist. Got to the point where I wanted a complete ‘one of each’ collection. Took me almost 30 years to finish it 😂
Incredible tale Dwight, and thanks again for your help! (check the credits for your name!)
I still have a borg figure my friend gave me
Interesting to see how closely the modelling team worked with the show designers . Artifacts like concept movie uniforms and actor head pieces would mean so much to the fan base.
Yeah the sculptors on this line really are top quality. Even today, the level of detail around rank pips and comm badges on these figures is lovely and completely screen accurate.
Well put together feature with great narration - I hope this is the first of many of these features on the channel! Is it weird that I think the best toys show are those classic Trek space helmets! You did a great episode of Classic Trek toys, I will have to look for it and watch it again.
Thanks! Yes we're very proud of our voice talent! The space helmet is one of the weirder pieces - but no stranger than the over-sized TNG Communicator that Playmates released :-)
ein echt schönes und informatives Video - danke James 👍
Thanks for sharing your collection with us and for the extraordinary photo shoot you did - so helpful!
I have the Classic Star Trek Bridge action figures set. Love them. I also have the 1995 electronic USS Enterprise as well as a couple of enemy action figures comprised as Captain Koloth and the Gorn. The Playmates toys are much better than the vintage ones from the 70s and 80s.
Awesome video. Just wish I could see the figures longer, but I guess that is what websites are for!
Unfortunately with all video productions of this nature, there's a fine line between an image being on the screen too long and not long enough. We chose the latter so as to not have our audience 'tune out' from lack of action. Having said that, Parts 2 and 3 of this documentary are slightly slower. 🙂
@@scifizone you guys know what you're doing, based on the number of views!!! high quality videos, thank you for making it.
Thanks for that. What really helps is having the passion for the topics being discussed along with the willingness to put a bit of time and effort into the videos. So yes, loving what you do is certainly a bonus. 🙂
Ooh looking forward to part 2, great vid 👍
A few people have asked about part 2, and as it turns out it's in production right now! If all goes to plan, it'll be released next month in September. 🙂
Hi when are you going to do the follow up part 2 too this video?. I really enjoyed this video.
Hey Ken, no, not yet. Alas these videos take time to produce. A second part will be released later this year :-)
Part 2 will be out October 14th! :-)
the retail pics that were flashed by ,were mine ,i took those ,didnt expect to see those on this video ,i have a few more to prove that .they were taken at toys r us ,in
port ore 1994 .not from lennon who copied them from the Mego ambassador facebook ,just to clairify
Thanks for clarifying Kevin. I'll make sure you're properly credited for the next episode. In the meantime, you're welcome to get in touch with me via FB.
@@jamespatrik6350 thank you very much ,they may be just pictures , however this Lennon guy snatched them from a few posts I made, later I found them on his playmates face book page as posted as his own ,with misleading info about ,store , locations etc.
I don't mind people enjoying them ,but it's just not right to say he made them ,I have a collection of them .I don't post them anymore cause of folks like him.yhanks again,he also kicked me off his face book, cause I called him out
I know it takes time and a lot of hard work to make these videos, but when is part 2 coming?
Working on Part 2 now Brian!
Giving riker battle damage really spoilt the figure☹️
Yeah, too many fans felt this way for them to be wrong! As a collector, I always preferred the "Season 2 Riker" figure
Is they going to be a part 2 to this as it says part 2
James is writing part 2 at the moment, so the next instalment is likely to be in a few months.
No part 2 yet
Not at the moment. James is writing and preparing the material for the next episode, but it'll still be a few months before it gets released. We certainly appreciate your anticipation for it. 🙂
Part 2 will be out October 14th! :-)
