My mates had one of these, extremely rapid 250s. Would not do more that 75mph when he first got it (carboned up std exhausts) Tried to decoke them, bike hit 80 mph then but still dissappointing. Ended up rebuilding the the engine, new crank, rebore, pistons & rings. I did some porting on it. Enlarged the exhaust port & raised them by 2 mm. Skimmed the head to bring the squish band down to 0.7 mm. K & N filters, micron expansion cans. Once run it flew ! Would wheelie on acceleration in the first 3 gears, up to 60 mph it was as quick as my Z750E (four cylinder) Topped out at 110 mph @ the red line in 6th. Sure it would have gone faster with higher gearing as it was still pulling and was about to go into the red on the tacho. (warned mate not to take it into the red as it may have caused the pistons to hit the head due to con rod strech at high RPM) Mate kept original gearing as the acceleration was fun in the powerband. Used to eat the yamaha LC250s that were supposed to be faster than the X7. Mate kept that bike for years, even when the rest of us went to 750s and 1000s. He would only lag behind on a run when speeds went over 100mph. Ah, to live those years again !
My friend Damien had one of these back in the day, as a fairly new bike. In standard tune they would do around 85mph, that's it. Nowhere near the ton. I had a CX500 at the same time and could easily roll the throttle back and go past once the X7 was at top speed. This one must be tuned.
meinem bruder seine ging leider vor 2 jahren kaputt. sehr schönes motorrad, is richtig gut im hohen drehzahlbereich, von unten raus schwächelt sie etwas. Frisst n haufen spritt wenn du sie drückst
spot on ,i sold a horse when i was 13 and gave my mum 300 quid and bought meself a x7 ,i still use the mititoyu vernier that i bought speshialy for doing the ports and head reprofilleing ,ace bike to lerne about 2 stroke technologhy ,
had a race tuned one of these best fun i ever had proper 2 stroke. shame they dont make them like that any more love the sound and the smell it made
Mine was tuned up head work and micron's just as quick as the LC but more nimble on country lanes wish I still had the old girl great memories
