Can't wait for you to do more Hot Water Music, Jason Black is such an amazing bassist. Would love you see you review 'Moonpies for Misfits' or 'I Was on a Mountain' or 'Rock Singer' omg he shreddddssss in Rock Singer omg so gud
An absolute masterclass, and completely under-rated song on this album is Kiss and Control - great bass line, great song progression, and absurd metal screams (along with Coin Return - Davey's best in my opinion). As someone who loves 'cinematic scream metal' that song is a beast with great bass lines
huge afi fan and not a bass player, but Synesthesia and Now The World are two b-sides from their 'sing the sorrow' album that retain their older sound and may be interesting to cover. also, At A Glance from their 'black sails in the sunset' album would be my pick for bass, because that entire album has such a nasty bass tone and is considered the epitome of their punk sound.
Yeah, that is prime AFI. I'm down with Sing the Sorrow, but then it kind of went in a direction I wasn't down with until they changed their sound to some post-punk stuff. That was alright
Those do rock, but sing the sorrow was cool too. Just the right amount of soft with the heavy. I would want any more and they went way soft. Death of seasons is a wacky and heavy song.
Mark bleeping himself with the Low End University logo was so funny. I also liked that the thumbnail has Mark with an expression like he's not digging it, but I knew he wouldn't say something negative because he's always positive. These are examples of how the reaction videos can be enjoyable even when I'm not very familiar with the band or song.
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciate you! I always strive to keep it objective about the music, even if a song isn't my cup of tea (happens often). I think any highly-requested song or artist has something worth hearing, and something that makes them unique, and I enjoy the challenge to discover what that is. Bonus points if it's the bass performance! 😉
I grew up listening to their earlier albums, but this is a killer track. Going to have to give this album some more attention. Incredible performance from Davey Havok as well.
I love AFI. The 1999 - 2003 years get played the most, because of the memories from my early 30s they invoke I suspect. I didn't find DecemberUnderground divisive; it was more of a change I felt ready for. A great album, for me anyway.
If you really want to dig into Hunter’s creativity, check out AFI’s Blood album. You never hear fans talk about it, but Hunter went off on that album, and I’m into it
Awesome song, awesome analysis and even more awesome channel🤘🏻. I agree that December Underground can be polarizing but it is far from being a bad album. I think the only ones who disliked it were older AFI fans who had this "goth/horror punk" image of the band. The album definitely has its experimental stuff but nothing to crazy. I love the album and also think it still retains the best aspects of AFI as band.
My beloved AFI. A fan deep in my soul today as much as I was when I discovered them in '99, and love seeing people still discover their work at large beyond a couple hit singles. As others have said many times before, every record really is an "era" for them, so what you hear on Decemberunderground is such a different vibe from what you get 3 years prior on Sing the Sorrow, or 3 years later on Crash Love, or any other point on their timeline, yet they simultaneously always manage to convey such an absolute "AFI vibe." While a vocal minority will always point to arbitrary album cut-offs where things were suddenly changed too much and "everything sucked after X" - I'd highly recommend some stuff from their *actually new* music from 2021's Bodies, or 2017's self-titled (aka "Blood album"), or there's a little EP in between there called The Missing Man. For songs, maybe "The Wind that Carries Me Away," "Trash Bat," or "On Your Back." Or if you want something really funky (literally): "Dulceria" Thanks for the reaction, Mark! Always a joy to hear your breakdowns.
its always refreshing to see people who can actually enjoy different styles of music, or people who can disagree without leaving a snarky remark about it. no matter what they've released, they have always offered something fun and interesting and thats one thing i've always liked about them. its never more of the same exact thing. shut your mouth is one of my favorite albums of all time, and 37mm is one of my favorite songs of all time. their variety is incredible
@ Absolutely agreed; one of my favorites from the past 10 years for sure. I was actually going to include it in my post as a recommended song, but it doesn't strike me as an especially bass-forward track. ;)
DecemberUnderground is a modern classic. I’m a big fan of classic AFI, but every track on DecemberUnderground is a winner and is my fav album of theirs. Hunter’s bass playing always reminds me of 70s classic rock melodic bass mixed with some Joe Lally (Fugazi) goodness. Another great walk thru of a great tune!
It does feel like each era of AFI is a completely different band, but I love all of them individually. The hardcore days are great. The horror punk days are great. The post-hardcore/emo days are great. They change styles a lot, but they always nail it.
@@LowEndUniversityThrice fans are waiting for you to delve into their post-Ambulance catalogue like Vheissu, the Alchemy Index EPs, and Beggars where their sound and creativity really evolved beyond their post-hardcore roots.
I was HUGE into AFI in the Black Sails/Art of Drowning era. Black sails needs to be a full listen - Theres not many albums that have had an affect on me like that one. With that said, I struggle with Decemberundergound and Sing the sorrow. Maybe it was the sharp shift in sound and production but it never clicked with me. Crash Love onwards I was really able to get into, especially Burials.
John Garcia - Space Vato, im not sure who plays bass for him but its very prominent on his albums. Its the singer from Kyuss aka Josh Hommes old singer.
You HAVE to check out the track Death of Seasons off of their record Sing The Sorrow. Although Decemberunderground (specifically Miss Murder) was their commercial peak, Sing The Sorrow is very much THE record where their most significant shift in sound happened, and where the fanbase really starts to split. Some call it a masterpiece (i do), some call it where they “sold out”. Either way, it would be cool to see you check it out, and not necessarily through its biggest singles. Death of Seasons is a weird song with very cool experimental production ideas, and that main solo bass melody from the intro is top tier
Sing the Sorrow has great songwriting on it: "Silver and Cold," "Girl's Not Grey," "Dancing Through Sunday," etc. Otherwise from this album, Decemberunderground, "Love Like Winter" is a really good, catchy song. This is all the poppier period of AFI, yeah, which is what I prefer (I know others prefer earlier stuff lol).
You gotta hear Kyuss if you haven't. They are a bass heavy Stoner metal band. Space Cadet is amazing song with lead bass in it. It's a great introduction although a bit slower than their other songs. And you also gotta check out how the basist plays his bass... He plays right hand bass as a leftie!
Haven’t gone back to this album for a very long time, cause I was one of those fans who didn’t like this one, and also got sick of people calling them “emo”, which they all hated too, so let’s not get that started here. But, Hunter is always a fantastic bass player on everything, so no surprise Mark enjoyed it a lot, can’t fault him! That bridge section is super tasty. Also lol at “New” AFI, and the album is nearly 20 years old.
They've been around for 30 years and it b/c they experimented. not many bands go that far. their new stuff is actual post punk 80's but they always throw in an old punk vibe in some songs
Hey, how are you? I'm from Brazil and I like your content, there's a rock band that I'm sure you'll enjoy analyzing the bass lines of, the band is called "Charlie Brown Jr", any song by them.
This album was the breakover for me. Sing the sorrows and prior is the AFI I love and grew up with (80s kid). December underground and after is a different afi that I don’t love.

To me every AFI album is good or at least interesting. They're evolving all the time and everything they make is just the logical step of the previous thing they did. I can understand the disapointment of the fans of the oldschool horror/hxc stuff but to me they just went on naturaly to the next step instead of getting stuck and do the same album again and again like a lot of bands do. I hope you'll take some time to focus on it one day! (Deaht Of Seasons may be the best one if you want to focus on the bass especially). I also really enjoy their last album Bodies and its kinda coldwave vibe. A lot to unpack here too!:)
As far as I'm concerned you just covered the high points of Decemberunderground pretty thoroughly. You've done prime AFI, you've dabbled in post-prime AFI. IMO you need to hit early AFI which is a whole different thing again, and something off of Shut Your Mouth which IMO is almost a different phase in itself. For early AFI Checkered Demon, or The Mother In Me are personal favorites. On the early stuff Hunter is damn near the lead instrument, with the guitar just filling out the mix.

Their first EP is 32 years old....
