  • Inuvik, Northwest Territories is the perfect place to set up a low orbit ground satellite station. Wondering why? In this video, we visit Norwegian aerospace company, Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT), to find out! KSAT invested close to $20 million in this town of 3,000 people to develop and run satellite operations in partnership with local firm New North Networks.
In recent decades, there has been a surge in the number of satellites being launched into space due to growing demand from commercial companies. When it comes to increasing the speed and efficiency of delivering data from satellites, polar orbits have the advantage. Locating stations in Canada’s north, close to the Arctic Circle, allows for more frequent communication with satellites, and makes Inuvik the ideal place.
In addition to location, KSAT was attracted by Inuvik’s skilled workforce and impressive infrastructure, which includes fibre connections, an extensive road network and a hospital. As home to the Government of Canada’s Inuvik Satellite Station Facility, Inuvik already has a proven track record in satellite data collection.
Learn more about KSAT’s Inuvik station and hear how this investment has created jobs and opportunities in the region.
