    As the world realises the potential that lies beyond Earth, defence planners are shifting their focus to outer space. The Ministry of Defence is keen to make sure the UK has a presence and part of that effort is HERMES.
    The new relocatable ground station at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (DSTL) takes the UK to the next level of space capability. We were given exclusive access to HERMES.

    In my opinion (taking into account only stuff known to the general public ofc), we need to seriously ramp up the speed at which we are developing our space capabilities. We need an increase in small satellites that can be manufactured, stored and launched in the case of a loss/malfunction of current satellites, with the ability to replace a satellite in orbit in 24hrs or so. A system perhaps simmilar to Virgin Galactic, with rockets launched from an air platform to reduce launch costs (I think the MOD may already be working on this, but we need it very soon). I believe we also need our own GPS style system now that we are out of the European galileo satellite system/project (again, it has been mentioned but I haven't seen any news on it since ~2018). Space is basically the only domain right now where capabilities are constantly being upgraded to the point being left behind within a few years is possible (enemy launches a few new satellite systems that were secret until launched, possibly making your own system obsolete over the course of a few days, that sort of deal). We need to make sure we keep pace with our adversaries, but also our allies, as we need to be able to access the same infomation as them, while looking at being locked out of their systems (again, galileo is a good example of this). Now is the time to act on this.
    I also think some sort of system for cleaning up space debris would be a grand idea. If you ask me, and country that contributes to space debris, should also be tasked with actively helping to clear it. Whether that is by simply de-orbiting defunct systems, or developing systems to actively remove defunct satellites/smaller debris. If we aren't careful we could well see a Kessler syndrome style scenario unfold, especially if there is ever a war/confrontation between 2 nations who have both Satellite dependant forces, and who posses weapons capable of taking out satellites.

      The U.K. actually leads the world In designing, and making micro satellites.
      This dates back to the mid seventies when Radio amateurs wanted to put there own satellite into earth orbit, but could not afford the cost, of launching a satellite.
      NASA said they had a small space for free in their nose cones, as long as the satellite was under weight of 6 pounds, and a whole diameter of three feet.
      Dozens of micro satellites have been launched since then.

      @@skylongskylong1982 While we are fantastic at designing and building satellites, we still rely on foreign powers to launch them, which is fine... Until we need one launching ASAP to replace a damaged/destroyed satellite in the middle of a war. Obviously we would have to wait for the weather either way, but being able to launch our satellites from our own backyard (maybe not always, but when needed), is a capability I feel we greatly need. Whether we develop a ship capable of going into the mid alantic to launch rockets at the equator, develop a SSTO to launch from anywhere we want, or build a spaceport in scotland, southern englad or jutting out from gibraltar (just a thought that last one, doubt its realistic), it would be invaluable to have in the event of a peer or even near peer war.

      @ClickNSpam from what I know (not much haha), one web's satellites don't have the capability we'd need to replace the Galileo. By the same system as virgin galactic, I mean a 747 with a small rocket, likely only capable of carrying a few microsats to orbit, strapped to its wing. Perhaps we would be able to find a system (mount+launch vehicle+associated software and hardware), capable of launching 1 or two small cube sat style satellites, maybe capable of being fitted to our A330 MRTTs. But I personally think we'd be better off contracting a private company to do it (again like virgin galactic, if their system works out), with part of the contract being to provide launches within 24hr weather permitting.
      As for SSTOs and skylon, while it is a long time away (if it is still going ahead, it's not even mentioned on reaction Engines' website), it could work to replace a VG style launch system in the future to further drive down costs. I'm actually really excited for the new space conmand getting set up, hopefully it does actually increase our space capabilities, and is not just a rebranding to get all of our capabilities under one banner. If it does, hopefully it will mean we can stay on par with the enemy and our allies' capabilites long into the future. Now we just need to work on getting a functional death start style lazer to take out enemy aircraft carriers from space ;)

      Britain builds moe small satelites than any other nation in Europe actually, and will be able to launch them soon too from Shetland and north scotland

      @ClickNSpam for a second I thought you had misclicked while typing SSTO, I have never seen the abbreviation TSTO before haha. And yeah the ravnX actually looks fairly interesting, along with being very cool looking. If reaction Engines is working on Tempest, hopefully we could see maybe an enlarged version (if needed, most 6th gen projects are already shaping up to be pretty huge), capable of carrying small rockets to a high altitude for TSTO purposes. Either way I think we're soon going to be seeing some very interesting things in the next few years, hopefully some of them resulting in the first space launches from the UK in a very long time.
