I believe it was in the bonus footage of the DVD that Glenn Close mentioned that she had to be in character (the costume and makeup) to give justice to the character of Norma since the concert featured some of the best performers of Broadway and the West End. She felt she was the weakest of the bunch so she had to up her game by being "Norma" and not Glenn on stage.

I saw her in the revival on Broadway, which was one of the best experiences of my life. After this song is the only time I can remember being at a show when the audience delivered a standing ovation in the middle of an act. And all the other actors on stage applauded too, which I thought was beautiful, because it works both in character and out of character - the other characters applauding Norma Desmond, and the other actors applauding Glenn Close.

Glenn Close is one of the world's greatest actresses. I was privileged enough to see her performance in the actual production of Sunset Blvd. She was ... Norma! Just like she was and will always be the ultimate Cruella so she will always be for me the ultimate Norma Desmond, up there with Gloria Swanson in the original Black and White movie version. A truly great actress indeed.

My daughter-in-law saw this near the end of Ms. Close's revival performances. Last row main level, in the corner. Swears she was pinned to her seat from the first downbeat of the overture until she could rocket to her feet in applause. Didn't breathe the whole time.
As always, thank you for a great reaction!

Glenn Close was my first version and memories of Sunset Boulevard, listened to that original Broadway soundtrack over and over and over again. She is and will always be my Norma Desmond, heard Patti’s version , great yea but not what Glenn gave me and made me feel! Wish they’d do a proper well done movie version of this musical with Glenn Close as Norma!!! Now excuse me while I go dig out that soundtrack and spend the next couple of hours on Sunset Boulevard!!

I went to see her final performance of this role in London a few years ago. After this song, she received a standing ovation that lasted about five-minutes. What she may lack in her vocals she sure as hell makes up for in her acting. From the moment she stepped onstage and descended from the stairs I was enthralled.

I'm in agreement. I saw Glenn Close in Sunset in May 1994 - up close in Orchestra Row D, and she WAS Norma. I've seen Broadway shows since the 1960's, but this performance was in a league of its own. It was one of those rare times when you could feel the bond between the audience and the performers feeding off each other. I found her voice to be magnificient for the role - shockingly good as I didn't expect as much from a performer who did not rise to fame as a singer. If it were any better in the traditional sense, it would have detracted from the emotional reality she brought. Remember, Norma was a silent screen diva who didn't make the transition to talkies - presumably because her voice didn't match up to the silent screen image she had projected. Glenn Close nailed it.

I had the privilege of seeing Glenn Close revive the role in the short revival on Broadway on June 14, 2017, and seated in the front row of the mezzanine. The performance was beyond anything I could have imagined. You could tell she put everything she had into the performance. While some complain that she was not 100% pitch-perfect, that did not bother me because the performance she put on was spectacular. I watched remembering the background of the story, where it's about a silent film actress trying to return to something that is not what she is used to. We are used to seeing Glenn on film and not really on stage singing so she is not in the normal element that we are most accustomed to seeing her in. I also took a friend to see that performance who had not seen a musical on Broadway since she saw Annie back in the '70s and she agreed with me that Glenn was beyond amazing.

I missed her in the original, but got to see her in 2017 in the New York revival. It was one of the most thrilling theater experiences of my life, second only to Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center in 1980. Her singing voice isn't perfect, but what great Broadway stars have perfect singing voices? It's her acting chops that made it so compelling and believable.

I saw her in 1994 at the Shubert in Studio City. We decided to go and got some rush tickets at the last minute. Glenn Close gave the greatest performance I have ever seen in a live production,. Her and the actor playing Max were unforgettable characters and parts. The had the stage on lifts or something for the mansion and the mansion would rise from the floor to reveal a scene from somewhere else in the story.
My buddy knew some of the cast so we went backstage, my buddy promising to introduce me to Glenn. I met some nice people and chatted for a bit. Then there was a murmur from the cast and they all parted. Glenn Close zipped by us, still totally in character as Norma Desmond. I tried to say hello as she passed me but she was walking in her spotlight. Backstage at the Shubert. She had an invisible spotlight.
    It was unforgettable.
It closed before I could go back and see it again. I wish I had.

What blew my mind the first time I heard her sing was that she sings. I knew her performances as an actress but I had no knowledge that she was truly a singer. Her presence is so powerful that I never even noticed your comment about her not singing in perfect pitch. I believe that musical theatre is not about "musical perfection" per se as much as it is about the emotion that a singer like her can emote. I believed that she was absolutely perfect. Now I find myself constantly on the lookout for "stuff" that she as done. You were right on the Mark, Marc (G). Keep up the good work.

Right before she sang this, when she’s in the studio chair and the spotlight hit her, the entire audience cheered as the orchestra swelled. I wept in my seat, and we all gave her a standing ovation after the song. It was just beyond.

@@butacabrown Totally agreed about BB, I think she brings a profound dignity to the role not to mention that high belt ! She will always be my favorite. But in defense of GC, one could also argue that Norma Desmond is SUPPOSED to be cringey. Kind of in the "overacting" style of the silent films, where she flourished. It's what she knows, it's what she's been praised for, it's what she lives & breathes, and it's very clearly bled into her "real" life. I mean, she's unstable, right ?

Totally agree with everything you said particularly how this is the song for Theatre coming back. Absolutely superb streamed performance here in UK with Ria Jones (who went on as Glenn Close’s cover in that London run to huge acclaim) then went on to do National tour. They were all set to do the show with a reduced audience at Leicester Curve, then lockdown rules changed there and within 10 days they somehow managed to turn it into a superb performance that is far more than just a pro-shot. They make use of the empty seats with the actors and orchestra in them, and this song in particular with Norma singing this into a visually deserted theatre is even more tragic. Think they’ve offered the streaming tickets everywhere except North America. If it ever gets shown there I’d definitely recommend it, best lockdown theatre I’ve seen.

She is playing an old woman, with 'old woman' pipes. A 'better' voice, displaying greater range and versatility and flexibility with a beatuful and consistent vibrato, loses a bit of the character to gain the vocal edge. That voice should crack, it should falter. But Close is the only Norma Desmond that I have heard that allows for that.

I came to this video with a seriously closed mind re: the Patti Lupone incident, as well as my adoration for her, but I have to say, this absolutely won me over.

I had the privilege of seeing Glenn Close in the original Broadway production. To say her performance was mesmerizing is an understatement. What a wonderful memory.

I had to come back for another comment. I honestly think Norma is one of, if not the greatest female role. It takes an incredible actress to carry it on stage, which probably led to show not running longer than it did. Also, I agree that Glenn is in an entirely different league of performers. She’s that good.
Those who saw the original got one helluva treat. That set, more specifically the mansion, was unbelievable. I’ve yet to see a show top the extravagance and elegance of it.
As for Glenn, she moved me with this role. She looked the part, made me believe Norma was crazy and delusional, but also made me believe that she (Norma) really did respect the roles she played, and never half-assed it. I was honored to see Glenn in the original run, and to be at the Tony awards when she won best actress. The broadcast didn’t catch it, but as soon as the curtain came down on the Sunset montage, and the show went to commercial, the entire cast let out very loud whoops and hollers. They knew they nailed it.

I love me someone giving Glenn the respect and admiration she deserves. I knew she could sing but I came across this performance a few years back and damn, it really just touched me so deeply, also knowing the story of the character and how tragic it is when she's back at the studio and this happens, it's just so sad and beautiful at the same time

Best actress-singer. You are right, she became and transformed to Norma Desmond halfway through the performance. Amazing!

I heard something about Sunset Boulevard being adapted into a movie with Glenn Close in the main role. But apparently they had to stop shooting because of the COVID. I'm not sure if it's true and what's the current status of the project. If they never make it because of the pandemic then it seems like the world doesn't want Glenn Close to finally get her well deserved Oscar...

I went to see Sunset Blvd. in LA. We were in our seats and it was announced that Glenn Close would not perform that night. Everyone was sad but it happens. The understudy was wonderful.. Went back a a few weeks late . Same story. Went back a third time. After all third times a charm. Missed her again. On the way out I asked someone from thie theatre if this happened often. They said yes. So I never saw her.

Those "pitch perfect fanatics" have to understand that is called Musical THEATER for a reason. In this case, the same thing happened with Maria Callas in the opera. She didn't always sing perfectly, but when she played Norma, she Was Norma, when she played Tosca, she Was Tosca, not Callas. This is Theater, Acting, emotion and passion

I was so fortunate to see Glenn Close in this role in the limited Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard. She is beyond incredible and if you ask me the only person that can play this role. Glenn isn't known as the best singer on Broadway and that works for this role. Her mannerisms and her facial expressions are what make Norma Desmond. Without Glenn in this show, it simply isn't Sunset Boulevard.

Just found your channel today Marc (and I've subscribed!) and I love your reactions to Glenn Close as Norma Desmond. She is for me the best ever Norma. There are other good performances that I've seen in London and here when it was staged in South Africa, but Glenn becomes Norma in every way. Can't wait to watch more of your videos. Thank you.

Had the good fortune to see her in the concert version in London a few years ago... she's definitely my favourite Norma, she was spectacular! Luckily, because of who the character is you don't age out of this role, so if they ever manage to actually make the movie version of the musical, I would love for her to play Norma in it.

I also enjoyed Elaine Page's take on this part because she was doing a real tribute to Gloria Swanson from the shape of the mouth to the mole! I love that.

Glenn Close is Norma Desmond, the best! My favourite musical. I was so lucky to see Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard some years back at The Colosseum London. The best performance I have seen from an artist.
