Got replies to da kine. Here goes nothing!
      1) I love haleiwa & the Kahuku Superette for poke, which #IMO is da best on Oahu.
      2) Hawai'i has such beautiful turquoise waters on the North Shore. Rippin' currents, but ...
      3) In my experience, Waimea Bay is the only place where a one foot wave will knock you down. Current's radical!
      4) Ahhh, Foodland ... where if you drive in through the exit way, and you are a haole tourist AND ... you are driving a convertible, then ... well ... the car might get pissed on and pissed in! I have seen it happen. Shame, huh? Many tourists do not know any better. They really do not. No one means to do what they do, usually.
      5) Pupukea is where da rich and poor kine live. Surfer Kelly Slater live up there in the hills. Barry Kanaiaupuni lives up that way, too. He is a sweet man!
Good that you can live in da bushes up in Pupu, because if you lose one beef, then da mokes no can find you!
      6) Obake will come find you, on the other hand, if you do any kapu kine anywhere, though ...
      7) Too many Kooks surf Pipe. Only go out when it is glassy flat, if that!
      8) You can't even mention Oahu's North Shore without talking about Eddie Rothman, who is a THUG if ever there were one. Guy is one haole from Philly, who thinks he is 100% Kanaka Maoli. Nope, not! He lives to beef, BIT TIME! His son Koa is nice. His other Son Makuakai's a chip of the old THUG DAD's block! The Rothman's are infamous for ruling through intimidation which of course gives the REAL Hawai'ians reallllly bad raps, reps, and names! Senator Fred Hemmings hated Eddie, with good reason.
      9) Giovanni's shrimp truck is AWESOME! Garlic shrimp is KING! Cash is cool!
      10) I love Kahuku's Superette for poke, fresh hot fluffy rice, and the best sauce to put over it all, on the island, in my opinion.
      11) LAST ONE under this video, anyway: The written laws do not matter on the North Shore. The unwritten code is that you must give a TON of respect to get a little in return, and ... then, do not even expect to get a little respect in return.
That is just the way it IS!
I mean, sure you can act any way you want to anywhere but, hey ... if you anger a North Shore local especially a Hawai'ian Kane, then, you really are cruising for one bruisin'!
Thank you for your content. It is so rad and fun to listen to. Makes me want to answer back to da MAX.
      Happy New Year!
      -- Abbie

Finally stayed in North Shore, Haliewa, after having a couple pryer vacays on the Westside and the Eastside, and Still, The Shrimp Shack in Punaluu is the BEST shrimp truck. PERIOD! Nothing else compares. Tried other “famous shrimp trucks in North Shore and such, & have yet to find a better garlic shrimp than that yellow little truck on the side of the road. Look for it. It’s the yellow truck. And you’re welcomed! 🤙🏾

Was blessed to call the North Shore home for a year, haven't been back in 14 years. Lived right on Kam Hwy not far from Pipeline worked at Turtle Bay, shopped daily at Foodland and had front row seats to the best surfers in the world. It was amazing, but the best part about Hawaii will always be it's people. Aloha!

The first time I went to Waikiki was 1982 and I was 18. It was so beautiful. Since then I’ve been to Kauai. Maui, and the Big Island several times and finally returned to Waikiki in 2017. I was sad to see how overbuilt is has become. It reminds me of California and how overcrowding has ruined our beautiful state. As a native Californian, I can understand how Native islanders might feel about their land being invaded and violated with pollution, commercial real estate, cars, dirty beaches, filthy water, and oil drilling off our shores- California is now a cesspool. When we go to a beautiful place like Tahiti or Hawaii we are very appreciative of the beauty and nature. We have looked at real estate on Kauai and Maui but as a nurse I realized that there is only one Level I Trauma center on Oahu (Queens) and I don’t feel comfortable living isolated in retirement without more access to health facilities. It’s too far to the mainland if something happens and one needs access to care that may not be available. As we get older, these kinds of considerations become extremely important and I think a lot of people don’t realize how much it matters until they’re in medical trouble. Especially since Covid. A community hospital can only do so much for a patient and a level one trauma center only has so many beds…

    • @movingtohawaii
      @movingtohawaii  2 года назад +6

Health care is a priority when deciding where to retire, and you bring up a great point, B. In fact, just about everyone has a story of someone in their family who had to travel to California (or somewhere on the mainland) to receive treatment or care that is unavailable here in the islands. Another cost of living in paradise, I suppose.

As a37 year critical care nurse I can tell you hospitals and health care differs around the country. You can go to the top hospital in the country and end up with a less skilled doctor and a poor hospitalization along with a bad outcome. It sometimes comes to luck. Why stay in an area that is supposed to be the best if you live somewhere you are not happy. Take a chance and live where you want. But no matter where you go remember to respect where you live.

I know Ted’s is known for their pies, but their take on the garlic shrimp, oh man , no joke. They are soooo addicting that I will pass by Giovanni to get Ted’s garlic shrimp, that magical sauce they use, I will literally dunk the leftover rice along with anything leftover in that stuff!

The aloha spirit needs to be kept alive and we need to make a change in the way that we function so that we don’t push the wonderful locals out. Prices getting higher, and jobs aren’t paying as much anymore. Thanks for respecting our Aina 💕

12:15 there used to be a huge ROCK hanging over the road there when I was a kid in the 70s. The Foodland there at Pupukea used to be an abandoned building, then a feed store, now it's a foodland lol.

Yep! You're not off by much. B4 the Pupukea Feed Store, it was local Mom n Pop General Merchandise store. If you headed toward Haleiwa, there was IGA Store, at the present-day Ace Hardware, & Kit's Supermarket, currently at Malama Market. When IGA moved buildings, they occupied current Long's Drugs Store, circa 1977 or so. From Pupukea, if you headed E, toward Kahuku, there was Kammie's Market/Sunset Beach Chevron, just b4 surf spots Kammie's/Rocky Point/Velzyland/Sunset Beach....OooooHhhhh, the memory floodgates are just Overflowing!

Chickens don’t crow brah 😂 Roosters Roosters! And you’re right about the surf! Surfed the North Shore and lived in front of Rocky Rights and Gas Chambers Lefts for 7-8 years. My first timeout we went out at Left Overs. The waves were about 2-4 ft. clean. Easy. Within a half hour the waves were 6-8 ft. and getting bigger. It was getting dark and never surfed waves that fast and powerful. I finally took off and it was so steep I hesitated and went over the falls. Got worked! Instant respect and got smarter about checking the surf report and knowing my limits!

Just some background on Laniakea/Lani Moo dairy farm. Up until late-1990s, Meadow Gold Dairy had a small milk processing plant at Laniakea, where cows were raised/cultivated for milk. Then milk tankers trucked that raw milk to the processing plant in McCully(?) Maybe some of your other viewers out there can clarify location. Foremost Dairy also had a processing plant at current Gaspro/Airgas location. There were, at least, 3-4 dairy camps, similar to sugar mill camps, on the N Shore from Waialua to Kahuku/Laie, whose main residents were dairy farm workers. Keep It Up W/these videos....MAHALO

Long ago i think it was in 80 or 81 I took a woman out to dinner at the Pearl city tavern with the monkey bar. After that she asked me to drive around the island so we drove through Waikiki then got on kapahulu ave to kamehameha highway through kaimuki all the way through aina haina and around makapuu beach to Waimanalu and kahuku. It was winter so the waves on the north shore were very high. About a mile past what used to be kuilima resort and country club, it’s now turtle bay resort, there was water on the highway about knee high. Not thinking I decided to try to drive through and get on the other side of Waimea bay. When we got about a quarter of a mile the water was about waist high. The waves were actually breaking next to the highway. The car was actually almost floating and was not drivable. I was driving a triumph sports car. We couldn’t get to the lighthouse at Waimea bay unless we pushed it. So the woman and I in nice dress clothes got out in waist high water and pushed the car until we could drive the car again just before Waimea bay. It was amazingly fortunate that the water did not get into my ignition coil, distributor, and carburetor. I was able to get the woman home. Her nice dress was ruined though. Because the inside of the car was flooded I decided to let it dry out and then had it detailed and traded it in. I took a loss on the car and learned my lesson. Never drive through the north shore in winter when storms cause ocean waves to break over the highway.😂

Basically, yes. Parking along Kamehameha highway and in the available areas that branch off Kamehameha highway are your best options for parking. During surf competitions the parking market gets red hot! Getting there early in the morning, getting dropped off/picked up, moped, scooter, bicycle… these are just a few ways to hack the parking situation.
