One of their greatest tunes. Yes, funky. That guitar riff. So unconventional and so incredible! That bass, man and those driving, dynamic drums. Dave Roth is insanely good at storytelling. People really don’t realize how loud the a music was! Kudos to the engineers who were able to capture that intense, ‘wall of sound’, that Eddie described they had to create as three musicians, plus a singer. Alex plays huge drums and cymbals. When Haggar joined, the loudness is more apparent of his equipment because the music became more ‘scaled’ down. Eddie played very loudly. He said it, himself. Alex needed big cymbals and drums. I guess he just kept it, as the years rolled on. Even when Alex brings things down, you can hear those instruments and their power. Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals are very powerful!
People talk about his lead playing but Eddie's rhythm playing is just out of this world. His time was impeccable. Words can't describe his playing you just have to listen. RIP king
"Somebody said fair warning, God strike that poor boy down!" They slipped the album title in there. This was the opening song on Van Halen's 4th album Fair Warning, released in 1981. Underrated song and underrated album. Perhaps, Van Halen's heaviest and most metal album!
Agreed. The one album where Michael was allowed to truly showcase his abilities. My favorite album. Their rawest, heaviest and most creative album. Eddie and Alex are in the pocket and the lyrics on these songs could only have been sung by DLR. Not to say he is an exceptional vocal talent. It's attitude and delivery...much like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love".

This is probably my next favorite VH album after the debut. A lot of darker heavy sounds. This is one of the songs that showcases Eddie's rhythm playing which is not often talked about. He always drove the songs along with everything he did between the solos, was always tight in the groove with his brother Alex.

There's a little bit of history in the intro; it seems that VH were playing in Europe where the standard household voltage is 220 and Eddie had to use some kind of expensive power converter for his amps. He got to taking apart the converter and lowered the voltage going to his amp one night and the result is that unique tone he got by turning the voltage down to about 92 volts. This story reminds me of the time Eddie had to pay for repairs to a grand piano at a hotel for taking a fork to the internal strings just being creative...just being Eddie Van Halen !
Man your mad respect to Eddie grabs my heart I've watched your reactions to many songs but mostly VH. U catch it man ....the drums of Al and licks of Eddy but also the deep meaning of their lyrics. I appreciate u man for sure..also remember u wearing a SF hat.. I'm a big niner fan. Hope to meet u some day. Thanks Eddie for all the entertainment guitar licks and that signature Eddie smile....proof seconds can rise to the top! El frankenstrat is proof....
This album was all Eddies idea. The singer David Lee Roth was totally against this album and wasn't the direction he wanted the band to go. Not much commercial success and basically only 1 song got much airplay and that being in side B song 1 Unchained. The whole album is geared towards people who appreciate a guitar driven album.
Not sure if I agree with that assessment. Those were Roth’s lyrics and a reaction to many things he and the band saw after touring the world. It would be difficult for me to believe Roth wanted a “lighter sound” to go with the darker lyrics
I think you're off by a few albums. 1984 was the album Roth didn't like. He was against the keyboards and wanted the band to maintain the hard rock/heavy metal formula. Ironically it was Roth's desire to keep Eddie's guitar front and center that drove him away from the band.
it's my all-time favorite Van Halen cut it's just badass remembering that's 1981.. the way Alex and Eddie played off of each other just driving that pocket and Dave singing was on fire on this album.
So much in this song The intro is incredible harmonic tapping. Bass and drums so tight. Epic riffs and solo..not to mention Dave's spot on vocals with lyrics that are perfect for the feel of the song. One of their best.
Basically the first four records, top to bottom, are untouchable. Even the quirky stuff on Women and Children First is like nothing from any other band.
Eddie's talent allowed him play any style that he could imagine. He could be percussive (like here in Mean Streets), rhythmic, sweet, sassy, quiet, loud, you name it. Thanks Jamel!
Everybody can tap, but the way he does it in the intro is the most creative brilliant use of that technique anyone has ever laid down. ALL HAIL THE KING!!!
Brother, I love you man. I am 54 and grew up on Van Halen. Eddie's music got me through some rough times. I have binge watched all your EVH videos and your reactions take me back to when I first heard their music as a kid. Thanks for your appreciation and reaction videos. I am loving it!
Eddie's passing away is a massive gut punch When I first heard about it, I honestly didn't want to believe that it was true Until I saw a tweet from Eddie's son, Wolfgang, confirming that Eddie indeed had passed away
Eddie's sound was unique, that is what separates him from the rest. No mistaking Eddie. This is Van Halen at it's best. They jumped the Shark with Jump. Lost a Rock Legend 🎸🤘RIP!
@@ZepG When I first heard Jump I remember it like yesterday, I kept waiting and waiting on Eddie to start riffing and it never happened. That literally was the end of Van Halen. I know later Sammy came in but the David years was my time the 80's.
@@jjstanding7314 I don't compare albums like that. Each one has to be taken on it's own merits. Is "1984" the pinnacle for what it is? Yes. Are there other great albums of similar genre and feel? Yes. Are there others I enjoy that much of similar style? No.
holy crap !!! I forgot how much I love this early VH ! haven't listened to this in years. we listened to this all the time in high school driving around. thank you for doing these songs.
One of their most underrated songs in my opinion. Typically a very fun, upbeat party band (esp during the David Lee Roth eta) but this album, and this track in particular, was darker and more serious. Not only does Eddie go off, but his brother Alex rips those drums apart. Diamond Dave's lyrics and vocals absolutely paint a picture almost like a movie. Great song to pick.
Mean Street has been my favorite VH song for almost four decades but watching you listen to it with a fresh set of ears and insights gave me a new appreciation for it! Great video! Thanks!
I was 16 years old when this album came out. I was already a MASSIVE Van Halen fan and I will never forget being blown away when I first heard it. Several months later, I went to my very first concert. It was Van Halen at MSG in NYC. Good, good times
My personal favorite Van Halen song has got gotsa be, I say GOTSTA be, "Ice Cream Man". An absolute masterpiece of guitar work from Eddie Van Halen. IMHO that is.
A master piece!!! A golden touch in his playing!!! What a freaking tapping intro!!! A solid rythm section! A funky /hard rock fusion groove thing! EDDIE VAN HALEN INNOVATOR!!, Congrast to your chanel
Nastiest guitar riff ever. That groove is sick. Michael Anthony doesn’t get enough credit. Listen to the breakdown and how simple he’s playing yet it’s massive. He lays back and it’s huge

I appreciate u man for sure..also remember u wearing a SF hat.. I'm a big niner fan. Hope to meet u some day. Thanks Eddie for all the entertainment guitar licks and that signature Eddie smile....proof seconds can rise to the top! El frankenstrat is proof....
Best feel like a Bad Ass
Drummer is Alex Van Halen, Ed's brother. You heard some of the riffs in the Live Without a Net, reaction about a year ago, the Eruption reaction.
That’s exactly why Diver Down turned out to be the way it was, half of it being covers and mostly pop/radio rock which Eddie didn’t wanna do
Not sure if I agree with that assessment.
You've got it backwards,THIS is what Roth loved,BIG choruses and fast DRAMATIC Rock. Roth hated the 1984 Keyboard oriented 1984 !
Us Stoners is what made them live'''''' ;|)
Thumbs up man. Rest In Peace Eddie.
🙌🏻🤘🏻🎸😓💞
it's my all-time favorite Van Halen cut it's just badass remembering that's 1981..
the way Alex and Eddie played off of each other just driving that pocket and Dave singing was on fire on this album.
Arguably the best Van Halen album. Gave me goosebumps watching you hear this for first time.
Ooooh man, my fav. That opening guitar slap....epic!
So much in this song The intro is incredible harmonic tapping. Bass and drums so tight. Epic riffs and solo..not to mention Dave's spot on vocals with lyrics that are perfect for the feel of the song. One of their best.
Man you got a lot of great stuff to get through with the VH catalogue. Looking forward to it.
Did You See My Playlist?
@@jamelakajamal Seen everyone of them brother, but man, there's a lot more where those came from.
Basically the first four records, top to bottom, are untouchable. Even the quirky stuff on Women and Children First is like nothing from any other band.
@@jamelakajamal Running With The Devil?
I love this song and to see someone years later appreciate it for what it truly means is awesome!
This whole album is amazing, unchained is a great song 👍👍🎶🎧👏🔥💯👍
Eddie's talent allowed him play any style that he could imagine. He could be percussive (like here in Mean Streets), rhythmic, sweet, sassy, quiet, loud, you name it. Thanks Jamel!
Jamel, please react to my favorite VH song, "Take Your Whiskey Home." Great tune. More great tunes on Fair Warning too!
Yes!👍👍 Another good one
Anything from women and children first
@Keith Sizemore You are correct sir. What a stupid mistake! Fixed it.
You had a look of total happiness on your face that whole song. Welcome to Van Halen! Best song!
Thanks Jamel. This really means a lot to us. EVH is why I started playing guitar at 12yo. Appreciate it brother
Excellent commentary! The song transcends a lot of different types of people because the words are so true and the music is something special. Peace!
SINNERS SWING... THEN "COULD THIS BE MAGIC" ... I'm telling ya... do it..
Everybody can tap, but the way he does it in the intro is the most creative brilliant use of that technique anyone has ever laid down. ALL HAIL THE KING!!!
My all time favorite VH song!
Thanks for all the great musical memories Eddie!
Brother, I love you man. I am 54 and grew up on Van Halen. Eddie's music got me through some rough times. I have binge watched all your EVH videos and your reactions take me back to when I first heard their music as a kid. Thanks for your appreciation and reaction videos. I am loving it!
Eddie's passing away is a massive gut punch
When I first heard about it, I honestly didn't want to believe that it was true
Until I saw a tweet from Eddie's son, Wolfgang, confirming that Eddie indeed had passed away
This song gives me chills. The galloping bass line .. Alex drums. The opening riff, the solo .. goddamn
Little Guitars, Dirty Movies, I'll Wait, And the Cradle Will Rock.
We will all desperately MISS, truly the GOAT. I'm 62 and have listened to all the so-called great pickers, EV will never be replaced.
Eddie's sound was unique, that is what separates him from the rest. No mistaking Eddie. This is Van Halen at it's best. They jumped the Shark with Jump. Lost a Rock Legend 🎸🤘RIP!
Tom H
This is one of my favorite VH songs since I was a teen. When Jump came out I was so pissed off I nearly gave up on them!
@@ZepG When I first heard Jump I remember it like yesterday, I kept waiting and waiting on Eddie to start riffing and it never happened. That literally was the end of Van Halen. I know later Sammy came in but the David years was my time the 80's.
@@tomh5006 Yes the early David years were my favorites but Sammy did had some good tunes with them.

STFU Already! 💩 💩
“That Eddie?”
We all asked that the first time we heard it too.
One of the only music reviewers that doesn’t talk during the song thank you
Maybe give these a try - Top Jimmy (guitar crying), Girl Gone Bad, - The whole 1984 album actually.
Girl Gone Bad 🔥
Truth. "1984" is a masterful album. Every song is just fantastic.
@@Easy_Skanking what albums are better than 1984 from Van Halen?
@@jjstanding7314 Women And Children First and Mean Streets
@@jjstanding7314 I don't compare albums like that. Each one has to be taken on it's own merits. Is "1984" the pinnacle for what it is? Yes. Are there other great albums of similar genre and feel? Yes. Are there others I enjoy that much of similar style? No.
Some of the finest rock you’ll ever hear. They harmonize like no other.
This album 'Fair Warming' is my favorite, it's a darker album in some ways. But so good.
Totally agree.
The best guitar album. You here Eddie’s dark side.
holy crap !!! I forgot how much I love this early VH ! haven't listened to this in years. we listened to this all the time in high school driving around. thank you for doing these songs.
I’m The One off of their debut is one of my favorites. It’s a banger and showcases EVH’s talents.
For me the entire album is "On Fire".. man.. every song is incredible.
One of my favorite Van Halen guitar riffs. Alex Van Halen kills it on the drums. Eddie just works his magic on this tune. #RIPEddieVanHalen 🎸
Thanks!
BAD ASS SONG!!!!!
Not my favorite song, but the solo to Ice Cream Man is the single best solo ever recorded. Perfect balance of skill, creativity, and feel.
A master piece!!! A golden touch in his playing!!! What a freaking tapping intro!!! A solid rythm section! A funky /hard rock fusion groove thing! EDDIE VAN HALEN INNOVATOR!!,
Congrast to your chanel
Now this is a jam RIP Eddie my brotha
This whole album….thank you for this!
Rest in peace to the GREAT Eddie van Halen. This is a really underrated record and this song a gem!
It makes me so happy to see someone enjoy the Mighty Van Halen - Peace
Just some good ole' wholesome rock and roll! Nobody did it better. Thanks Jamel!
Nastiest guitar riff ever. That groove is sick. Michael Anthony doesn’t get enough credit. Listen to the breakdown and how simple he’s playing yet it’s massive. He lays back and it’s huge
Check out 'Hear About it Later' on this same album..
Wouldn’t I give to listen to Van Halen for the first time. Just being in awe of them sounds coming out of the speakers and being flabbergasted in how they can all pull that off. I’m living vicariously through you!
Thanks a TON for doing this awesome VH tribute, brother. Too cool. EVH and this band meant and means SO much to soooooo many folks. Their impact on rock 'n' roll and on people's lives (mine, for sure) cannot be overstated. Those early years were magical. Keep rockin', Jamal. I'm officially a new fan of yours!!!
