Well its time to retire my 9 year old RotJ Vader i geuss. Being the First Vader we got he holds a special spot for me in the line but the new 2023 one is superior just whish they added that Chain and even with the wonky helmet issue that would have made him next level! RIP Sad face Vader! Thanks for the comparison video Nate

@@OutOfTheBasementI made a custom pyre using the Emperor’s Wrath Vader’s body (with missing hand) and the melted Vader helmet from the SDCC Kylo Ren set. I use the blue line Vader body to display the lightning head from Emperor’s Wrath Vader (and hide the hand that should be missing under the cape). That way I don’t need to retire anyone in my display.
The helmet on the blue line comes apart in 2 pieces as well! I still love this Vader despite its shortcomings, there is a certain charm I guess given it was the first Vader made for the line.

@@OutOfTheBasementI wasn’t convinced at first either because it takes some effort to separate. I wanted it enough that I was willing to break it to be sure. It separated without breaking. I’m close to using the same effort to remove the top of Jabba’s hookah from the lower bowl, but I’m less convinced that’s possible.

On the cardback picture he doesn’t have the chain. But it would have been standard to add it with the accessories.
That is true, but for the regular waves they never draw inspriation from the Kenner image. Similar to Ewok Romba being on the card for Paploo. It's just whatever image Kenner used. -Justin
On the blue line I adjusted the “cap” and brought it forward over the eyes, sprayed it in gloss. It really works!

This new Vader looks awesome, the proportions are on spot, the new helmet looks as in the movie, the hand it's a fun accessory, I like this one better to any other past Vader figure, nice review Nate 😁

The blue line Vader helmet should pop into two pieces. I didn’t know this till I was looking up how much it went for when I sold it. I had that thing for years and never knew.😂

This Vader is definitely better, but no chain and an inaccurate skin tone means I’ll use the older one as a helmet off Vader from the end of the film, while this one keeps on his helmet on a different shelf. Can never have too many Vaders!

The helmet on the new Black Series figure is a easy fix. Just add a small amount of black tack in the grooves in the lower part of the helmet and voila, the helmet will stay in place really well.

They are both good figures. Obviously the sculpt on the newer version is more detailed. I actually like the skin tone aswell. It's just another option in an ever expanding expanding vader line. Next they'll be a removable helmet and we'll be presented with an ewok. No fur on his head and purple rings around his eyes.
Ultimately I think this figure is a success despite its flaws. The chopped off hand looks great.
The helmet is frustrating but the whole reason for owning this figure is to have it on the shelf without the helmet. Plenty of other vaders out there that have great helmet sculpts. And having the ability to give the detached helmet (which has really nice details) to Luke as he kneels down with this damaged Vader on the shelf is very satisfying.
The skin tone is strange because they also have it too pink and reddish on the duels end Vader figure. It’s nowhere near as pale as it should be on that figure either.
I got the SHF Version with the damaged head last week and they really nailed both the paleness of the skin and the sculpt of the scarring on the cheeks and top of the head.
The Hasbro duels end has the “angry eye” that I think captures Hayden’s performance in the show better, but the SHF fig gets the skin tone and scarring details better. Strange that Hasbro did the skin tone so dark on both of these newer unmasked heads.
I will probably pick up this version eventually. I just can't believe how "good" the face is on the blue line Vader. Having that scene with Luke posed with his helmet just doesn't make sense with this flesh tone vader of the 40th one. I don't know what to do! -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement it’s definitely not pale enough but it still looks awesome leaning back with a cut off hand against a kneeling 40th Luke, with Luke holding the detached helmet. Very satisfying
Do you have the Emperor's Wrath Vader by chance? That one had some colored wiring on the exposed stump. I also wish the 40th ROTJ could've featured that. -Justin
@@OutOfTheBasement I don’t have it but I know what you are referring to. as we both know, standard black series figs are seeing less and less paint. It sucks. I miss that little bit of detail here too but ultimately I still enjoy the figure without that little dab of paint.
Lots of much worse missing paint offenders in this line these days in my opinion.
Lots of figures with very bright plastics with no shading or wash that just makes the figure look toyish and plain bad overall in my opinion. Those are the ones that really bug me more than things like couple of missing dots of paint on a missing hand.
So there are two grooves that go onto the neck piece. However, I don’t know if it is because of the portrait is too big but it does require more effort to place it. The dome goes a little too far down which makes it looks like the ANH helmet. Also, unlike the ESB Vader, details are lacking on the chest box for whatever reason.
None of us should be required to put this much effort to make the mask work. The best thing on this figure is vertical hinges for the wrists and it was the ideal time to give him new legs but they did not. They’ve never shown him at conventions with the mask on, or on their streams if the mask was going to work properly.
I’m still happy that I’ve got it, one to “figure it out” and another to keep carded. Still a feature complete Vader without the Deluxe pricing which is absolutely fine.

Cheapest I can find the new one is $50 on ebay. Amazon had preorders for $25 but it changed the SOLD OUT just as I clicked on it. I'm hoping I can find it in the store somewhere but I doubt I will.

When you remove the head from blue line or Emperor’s Wrath Vader, the cape stays attached at the shoulders. You would have to break the cape off to swap it.

Hello Nate thanks for the comparison of the original black series Vader and the new 40th Anniversary Vader.
I'm still waiting for my Jedi Vader, he's on backorder at BBTS unfortunately. But looking at both on this video, I agree with everything you said. The original's flesh tone looks so much better than the latest version and why no chain for his cape Hasbro ?? And yes those legs could use a resculpt. Single joint pinless legs would improve the look of this figure immensely.
If Hasbro had made these little changes to this version, we'd have the ultimate Vader in black series. Oh well 🙁. The 40th version of Vader is still very impressive, but he could have been so much better.

I like the new head sculpt more, but the shoulders rest too low while the old one rests too high. Also the New fabric looks more on the flimsy side. I can't wait for my Hot Toys figure to come in. They hit the proportions PERFECTLY.
As they should considering it costs $400 lmao.

Just orderd Dengar and Torkin archive im up to 15 figures now. My first vadar was 40th rotj i am late in the series but its the best time IMO these old figures would of been a waste comparing to todays quality

Going to get the main characters first I don't think kit fists and grevious would look right with my figures so far. I've got r2 c3p0 lando leia chewy akbar torkin vadar dengar boba shoretrooper inquisitor ashoka luke all archive or 40th anniversary updates. Just I am holding back on Bossk incase he gets a re release do you think he will if so would the previous be worthless?

I passed on 40th Vader despite it being one of my most anticipated. Lack of chain and wonky helmet I could tolerate. Weird flesh tone was the dealbreaker tho

Maybe if you only display it without the helmet, it’s good enough.
But honestly they need to commit and do a deluxe Vader.
-quality material for cape + robe
-correct helmet finish(depending on movie)
-correct lens color (I don’t understand the ugly brown lenses for ROTJ)
-new legs
