Why I couldn't get my leg to move correctly...

  • For the past 3.5 years, I've felt like I couldn't get my left leg to work how I wanted it to. This past month I finally got some answers. It may not have been what I wanted to hear, but it's certainly nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It was incredibly frustrating to start competing at the top level and then suddenly have it taken away for some unknown reason that just kept dragging out, but I'm really proud of how I handled it. When I was younger, one bad thing would lead to a negative spiral. Life asked me to grow and I went with it. Now, I can feel things like pain, sadness, and frustration, while still keeping myself open to all the love and beauty around me.
Hoping you create love in these last moments of 2022 and follow what brings you joy in 2023.

What you explained about being sad but still being open to the happy things in life is EXACTLY what I concluded after my brother died. I experience both simultaneously. Weird, but so true... and it's healthy, I believe.
It's like I'm running a happy trail while wearing a backpack of sadness.
    Blessings to you.

Hey Sandi :)! You and Sage are just so strong and inspiring with how you’ve met all these challenges that life has thrown at you. I really hope you both have a great 2023, you so, so deserve it 🙏.
I’ve been struggling a bit for a while now and seeing how you’re handling everything with so much grace is incredibly powerful. I hope that knowing what’s going on is a relief, even though I can imagine it might not be what you had hoped it might be. You’ve got this 💪!

Dear Sandy, I am not a professional runner but I love it so much. At the top of my performance I have had to get a heavy foot surgery done : bunion and metatarsalgia. First 2 weeks were so difficult huge pain! I am doing as much as i can around the foot (upper body workouts glute workouts on the mat). I would love to be able to cycle or just walk normally. Patience. I wish you a great recovery

Hey Sandi love your videos been watching for years! I did PRP and stem cell and have to say it was one of the best things I ever did and paid for! I had a pretty severe SI joint injury. I was in intense pain 24/7 and couldn’t run for a year. 3 months after PRP I was 60% better then I did stem cell and that was crazy amazing and started running shortly after. Im now better then I was prior to injury. You’ll be really happy with it!! Stick with it and good luck!

That is great to hear you have an answer! Your story resonates with mine. I’ve spent the last year dealing with the feeling that my right leg does not move the way it used to. At times it feels like my leg is weak or not moving symmetrically to my left. On slow motion video you can see I have less knee flexion through swing phase and possible less foot dorsiflexion.
I’ve seen a number of specialists who all have had various opinions of what might be going on. I also had a number of tests and imaging studies to identify the problem. It seems the best possible explanation may be a spondylolisthesis and herniated disc causing radiculopathy. I’ve had an MRA of my hip which shows impingement but no labral tear so that seems less likely. Some of my symptoms sound similar to Runner’s Dystonia, but I have not seen a movement disorder specialist to have this ruled out.
I hope the hip treatment works, but if not you may want to consider seeing a neurologist like me.

I feel ya. I want to tell you this because i know exactly how you are feeling. If you scan the human body of almost anyone on earth, their body will be messed up somewhere. Even in kids you will find bone spurs, arthritis, disc issuses, muscle imbalances ect... I had a neck injury and my initial imaging told them that basically i was on my way to disability. The doctors were young and really didn't understand how the body adapts. Your insides not being perfect doesn't mean you are defective, broken or weak. Your body will adapt and heal. Yes, i have discomfort and need to listen to my body. First thing they said was no running or dirt bike riding. First thing i did was run and dirt bike ride. My body understood what was being asked of it and it adapted. It wasnt comfortable but what runner cares about that lol. So my message to you is dont take this as a death sentence. Take care of your body and listen to it but dont let it trick you into thinking you are weak or defective. ❤️

Thanks for sharing your story and your optimism. I've had a rough couple years as well with a house fire, losing my brother, and hip issues since 2020 I'm finally in PT for. Weirdly parallel to what you've shared, even down to not being able to use my left leg in the way I would like despite being superficially strong. I actually didn't run at all in 2022 due to things not feeling right and it stopped me from skiing as well. Things are starting to look up for me recently, and I'm really happy to hear that you've identified the root cause and have a positive outlook! Here's to a great 2023

  • @williamjsmith3067

    Hi Sandy,
Sorry to hear about you hip issues. I went to the Steadman clinic in 2016 with a torn labrum. It was pretty bad... the tear was from 9 to 6 (using a clock face for reference). I tried PRP but it didn't work because the tear was so bad. Dr. Phillipon did my surgery in February (2016) and I was back to running during the summer. I've run 3 100 mile races since with no problems. I will occasionally have a twinge in my hip, but it goes away with a day or two of rest (it's usually after I do something dumb like really bump up my mileage too quickly). If you need the surgery, the Steadman clinic is the place to do it. They had me on an exercise bike within 2 hours after surgery! BTW, I had the surgery done at age 49. You are a lot younger and stronger so I'm sure you will do great. Best of luck!!!

This is the last YT video I am watching in 22, and I am grateful for that! I am going through a similar bumpy road with my running, with injuries and other impediments that have screwed up my running plans and goals. I've learned to be patient and accept that these things happen. I have also invested a lot of time studying all things about feet, their biomechanics, and what drills unlock the hidden mobility needed to be injury free. I wish a 23 full of pain-free, joyful running. And an amazing '23 overall. You and Sage are two examples of fortitude. Warm hugs!

What a journey you and Sage have been on and you have so much to be thankful for as you said, namely your love for Sage and his love for you. I feel sometimes in life it's OK to acknowledge that (for that time or moment or whatever) we have simply been dealt a total S^&T hand and that's what you have been dealt. There is simply no reason any one of these things should be happening to either of you let alone all of it. I think sometimes being a little bit pissed off can be a good thing so don't be afraid to let that emotion run wild from time to time. Anger can be a very rewarding emotion at times and it's gotten me through a few rough patches of my own over the years. You deserve to be a bit angry at your situation. That all said, be angry and (like you are doing) jump back on the bus and slap it into gear. Use that frustration to fuel your passion for 2023.... You got this!!

I ran Boston in 2021 injured but was going to let that opportunity past me by ! I had a finishing time of 5:42 the worst finishing time I ever had ! I normally run about a 3:40 marathon ! No one can figure out what is wrong with my leg I even had surgery because one doctor said i needed a Fasciotomy well that was super painful and recovery was awful and it didn’t fix the problem! I don’t know where to go from here ! I also had a house fire in 2020 and running has always been my outlet for stress and I can’t get my right leg to do it’s job ! I live in Colorado as well would it be possible for you to give me the doctors name you are working with maybe he will be able to help ?
