- In the remote Pakistan village of Hakimwala, farmers battle a deadly pest that is ruining their cotton crops. Many find it difficult to afford the pesticide and face mounting debts.
The elders of the village encourage the young men to travel abroad to earn better pay and help lift the village out of poverty.
Twenty-eight-year-old Sharif has lived in Hakimwala all his life. He is an only son and drives the only car in the village. He is responsible for driving the sick to the city hospital three hours away.
But with the infestation of his cotton crops and rising debts, Sharif decides it is time to seek his fortune elsewhere.
Sharif decides to go to Dubai despite warnings from his friends. The villagers sell the car and his family sells their hard-earned lands to cover his expenses.
For the first time in his life, Sharif leaves his village, flies in an airplane and experiences a foreign land. In spite of mounting debts, Sharif is about to learn that there is more to life than money. Or is there?
Editor's note: Since this film first aired in April 2016, $9,621 has been raised for Hakimwala through an online crowdfund campaign. The money has been used to buy a new van for the village.

I cried the whole time watching this Video, I cried of shame. The beautiful people of Pakistan just teach me Humility, Simplicity and Happiness praising God...I am working in Dubai for a long time and I do not understand Pakistanis until this Video. May be u can visit Pakistan one day,
Now a days its top tourist destination,
Admirable feeling. Plethora of thanks for helping people.
There are many thoughtful moments in this documentary. If someone had noticed when he came back from Dubai his father was saying ....I sold our land to pay off debts I can sell more land to buy you a car too.... Another thoughtful moments when his mother was complaining that he promised us to take us to Hajj but he did not but we cant talk rough to our son as he is the only son.... I mean look at the attitude of his parents. Though illiterate but their behavior to their son is so supportive like educated city parents.... really amazing!!!
ShinyStar itvis not a matter of illiterate or educated parents are parents .they have same feeling towards their childerns.
Indeed
actually people from pakistan whom i met so far were really polite and innocent and especially very respectful
the people are lovely on both sides of the border its our armies and govt which divide us tbh been to india several times and when i tell them i am from Pakistan they treat me very well.

After watching this short documentary, I learned 1 thing from them is that no matter how uneducated they might look for the world but they never forget Allah. Every person in this documentary kept thanking and praising God even in their hard times. I hope sharif and his village have better life and one day people will remember them for something really good inshallah. Good luck
People raised almost $10,000 for Sharif. He now has a new van. More info available at hakimwala.com
Syed Owais Ali I am so happy he is happy
may Allah grant all his wishes. I have everything but I am still unhappy.
Syed Owais, are there anymore villages or people like this is need of help? Please make a website or something, so that people from the city can come to know and help our poor countrymen. I was embarrassingly so ignorant and unaware of this, I felt really bad after watching this video. Please let me help.
Also, rather than buying a car why don't we build schools and educate these people and their children. A car would help them for now, but education would alleviate poverty for generations to come.
I can see a happy simple people who loves their people in the village... supporting each other.. no insecurities instead ready to give just to fulfill one man's dream and the villager are still forgive him even though he failed..Subhanallah..
their culture is sooooo beautiful. I love the compassion, and the selflessness. I wish America was more like so

I love how Al Jazeera did not document Sharif's experience in Dubai AT ALL. They didn't even let him comment on precisely why he came back after 4 months. Sharif is lucky that he was even able to come back at all, most south Asians are trapped there with their passports taken from them.
Exactly. I really wanted to know of his experience and reason for return. Honestly, I had the exact same thoughts when he returned. I was like "Alhumdulillah, atleast he came back to his family"

Instead of wasting billions of dollars at roads /metro trains/amusement parks in cities , CM punjab should be investing more in village , There Should be Islamic system Of Zakat /Usher for poor like in Jordan . Invest more at basic level , it will do wonders .
I think roads connect local economies. Basically, connecting Punjab with each other, and eventually all of Punjab with its capital, Lahore.
Lahore does not want to give anything to saraikis
@@nadirgurmani4298Lahore isn't a person, it is a city. If there's anything wrong, it is with the administration and policy makers of Government. Lahoris don't have anything to do with it, we are also same hardworking people like you.

I thought the guy is a bit of a fool. He should have thought hard before making his father sell the land and the car (and spend nearly $6000 dollars) to go to Dubai. When he got to Dubai, he should have stayed there no matter how hard he found it and earned enough money to pay back all his debts and also save some money to take back to his parents.
They consider themselves poor but they are not. Their lives are full. maybe not with money but with love. How could they leave that to chase paper?

+beardedwanderer He is in debt, did you not read the subtitles?
You are right brother
We are not poor we are not rich we just live a simple with less money.
This documentary made me cry. It is a plight not only of Pakistanis, but other nationalities working abroad. I am a Filipino, now working in UAE.
I am fortunate that I felt welcome and adjusted quickly to the culture here and actually felt like a second home.
I am fortunate that I came here by my own choice, to seek a better future for myself. I too, am an only son, but my parents are living comfortably, for they have their own means of income.
It is heartbreaking for me to watch this, for most of my friends and acquaintances here came not out of choice, but obliged, even forced because of circumstances. My heart goes out to this man. I hope he gets the trust back of his village.
I am from Nepal and I have watched almost all the episode covered by Alzageera but I haven't found this much happy and funny person in Pakistan. He is so happy and it feels good for all.
Meanwhile in some places of the world children cry if they don't have the new xbox... The world is so unbalanced, that's why it's breaking apart.
+liedetector101 dont you know Islamic names in scientific research and development, actually Muslims are the pioneers of recent sciences and Islams strongly recommend to search and learn
+liedetector101 thank you for being so honest and telling the truth. some People would like to say oh it is beacuse of this, and beacuse of that. but it is the fault of muslims themself. look at east asia, look at other Places. when i went to Afghanistan all those i talked were telling me how what science Discover today, is already in the quran. instead of Learning real science in Afghanistan, they are Learning about the hadith, and the miracles Muhammad did. instead of working so hard to memorize the quran, they should learn real science. by real science i mean, Math, physics, chemistry and so on.
+liedetector101 selective facts how many chinese have won Nobel prizes in Sciences over 1 billion and how may Indians have. Yet both of these races have contributed. What you failed to mention is that most of the Jews Nobel prizes were not won in Israel but USA where we all know the advantages that they have there.
+liedetector101 I advocate for secularism and education. But to say Islam is why people are poor is a gross generalization. To pin the economic disparity on poorer countries by saying it's their fault they are poor is overlooking the power structures imposed by ex-colonial powers that now form the first world and which actively propagate inequality to maintain their economic hegemony.
+liedetector101 lol Cuba is a perfect example of the first world countries (through the embargo) creating conditions that make it difficult for economic growth in third world countries.
But it's okay, you seem only interesting in pinning all the blame on Islam, as if illiteracy is an issue only in Islamic countries. Iran is the country in which the states mixes religion and politics way more than many other Islamic countries. And yet Iran leads as the producer of scientists and medical personnel in the region. It's literacy rate is at 82% (97% amongst youth). Moreover most University students are women (65% according to a unicef census). So how does Iran fit in your narrative of Islamic backwardness.

Thankyou Aljazeera for bringing this story to us, Even we Pakistanis living in big cities are unaware of the problems faced by our sweet village people.
Hi, i am from India, its pretty amazing video of pure village peoples the way of their life, it making my heart filled...so cool n peaceful daily life they are having..! i know many pakistani friends they are from the village...so polite behaviour and very innocent nature, i know chacha from pakistan he does collect scrap but the way way of his behavior it make me think always
u indians are also like this.why u r showing that india is very progressed
+gujjar pakistani, In some ways we have progressed a lot, in other ways we are lagging a lot. Doesn't mean we shouldn't show our better side. You people can also do it. The world has been seeing only your bad side. Its upto you to change it.
+gujjar pakistani Bro; cool down! The video or short film is not about progress or they would have made it in a metropolis not in a village. But it's about the burden a man has on his shoulder who go out to earn a living to sustain a whole village back home. For Every success story there are many failures and disappointments too. The mouse hole four or eight of these workers squeeze them self into for years, is only recently discovered, how in humane and cruel the life of these people is there. Not everyone has the guts, nature or steel to handle it. Check those videos here on RUclips.

Kind of scary how the same people are no matter where you go. I liked that young guy. He seemed like a really nice easy going person. No same culture. We are muslims and we are different, so stay away. If you are having same environment it doesn't mean we are same and from culture.
+Faraz Khan, I'm a muslim from another continent and trust me, we can't make a distinction between a muslim and a hindu... so yes, you do share the same culture and religion has nothing to do with it.
This guy won my heart...I pray for him and for the Village...
This reminds me to my neighbor in Malaysia. They're Pakistani that have stayed for years there. Having kids there and also IC as Malaysian citizen. May Allah protect them always. They are nice person.

india and pakistan can do better for humans rather than fighting a lot with each other a common man is suffering we do not need weapons we need a life
+navdeep grewal so tell this to your govt.
+Hafiz Aiman Jamshaid agree, it's an Indian problem under BJP. Pakistan has no wish to go to war with India or join an arms race. Millions live under the poverty line in both countries
+navdeep grewal totally agree with you thumbs up
agree with you dude...
I think people on the both side of border should realize it time to fight poverty. investing on nuclear missiles will not fed up hunger. i have a dream when Indians can work in Pakistan without visa and vice versa. The system of free movement of labor here in Scandinavian countries.

😊 Good
Moral: money is not everything. If he had stayed back in his village, life would be happier. Despite the economic hardships, its great to see such a humble and supportive local community where sense of pride, forgiveness and caring for the others plays a key part.
Thanks for sharing his story. It is very heart touching and eye opening. It is wonderful to see that there is still a sense of community in some parts of the world. Where elders are a part of young peoples lives and not shamefully hidden away. It is also eye opening to see where some of our (our meaning our society as a whole) cotton comes from, and the stories of the people and the struggles they go through. When I purchase clothing it is hard to imagine that other lives are affected by that purchase. It is true how unfair our society is. Maybe, if more people can share their stories like this one touch hearts and open eyes, a shift in our cultures and society will change to a more community based and compassionate one.
+Krisenda Lobato totally agree with you
