Bocchi was great. It really hit those moments where it goes "oh shit, I've *been in that place before*", but it doesn't feel... mean about it? The show clearly gets comedic chops from Bocchi's anxiety but it feels more like "yeah, this is what that feels like, this is the impact it can take". Nowadays things mostly go better but sometimes it still happens, where a curveball pops up and it just hits you in the head like a truck. Probably the best anime I saw this year. Really, really good show.
I think what's so brilliant and makes it so kind for lack of a better word, is that it goes out of it's way to show how all Bocchi's fears are, while real to her, not something that bothers anything else. My fave scence in the whole show is on the train to Enoshima where the other girls talk about how Bocchi is at school and go on about how much everyone else is missing out on by not being her friend.
@@mrbeckegruvan16 You're absolutely correct; that's a very salient suggestion about the show's approach which I really should have touched on. It absolutely does goes out of its way to show how other people see Bocchi's anxiety manifest and them reacting kindly to it. That scene's similar to the street performance, with Bocchi realising that she doesn't have any enemies there and the show really highlighting that moment of realisation for her. When Hiroi said "Don't get it twisted who your enemies are," I actually _really_ felt that one. It was carthartic, almost. Wish I'd mentioned it in the review, now. Fantastic point.
It's a fantastic show, absolutely. Takes it easy, but still takes it, as it were. Really deftly handeled - I was talking to the friend I watched this with about it, and he very astutely pointed out that if it were funnier it would reduce the potency of the depiction of social anxiety and turn the show into something like Komi-San, where her social anxiety is just used as something to make her seem cute rather than be the potentially debilitating complication it truly is, but too far in the other direction and you've got WataMote or NHK. They struck a balance as close to perfect as I can imagine a show like this might ever manage.
i believe the series opens with the lines 'the girl who wonders if it's okay to join in, and by doing so misses her chance, ending up all alone.' and i dont think i ever fully recovered from that one
man im so glad you liked this show, it's gone down as one of my all time favourites for being funny, endearing, uplifting, motivating and masterfully put together by everyone involved
"When you are scared to go out the front door then going outside is something to be proud of" Thank you for that. Don't let people belittle your very real achievements. If it is hard for you to do something and you manage to do it, you accomplished a hard task, and that is praiseworthy.
Brother, you encapsulate the experience of watching a given anime better than anyone else I know on this god forsaken platform. Maybe it’s the happiness cycle talking, but I don’t know another anituber (God save me for using that term) who as succinctly and sardonically conveys what… well, hell, you could wax thesauric about “Bye Bye, Butterfree” and I’d be rapt and nodding throughout like one of those wooden Simpson-meme-water birds. Best wishes, and as an English major (re: fellow dipshit with a thesaurus) anxiety sucks and I wish for you the best of New Years. Take care of yourself, mate.
Honestly you are so good at gathering the thoughts that are just scattered around my brain when I try to understand why I love a show so much, and you are also presenting it in a very melancholic but uplifting way that is easy to understand. I truly appreciate the work you put into these videos, cant wait for the next one
That's one of my favourite things to hear people say in response to my videos, thank you! Really means a lot to hear I've done a good job at putting thoughts into words. Really kind of you. Whether I hold off for Frieren or go straight to Scott Pilgrim or Edgerunners, I hope you enjoy it when it finally shows up!
Nice of you to say, thank you. I tend to gravitate towards that kind of media for whatever reason, so it's been on the docket for a long time. Hopefully I can get it out pretty shortly after the series concludes.
YAY new aaox review AND OMG NEXT REVIEW IS FRIERNE I WAS JUST GOING TYPE "REVIEW FRIEREN NEXT"!" HYPE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! also check out apothecary diaries and ascendance of a bookworm both of them are awesome too !!!!
Thank you! Might not come out NEXT next, might do that Scott Pilgrim/Edgerunners review first, but I'm already planning Frieren so I can review that as soon as the currently airing season has concluded (I think it's listed at 28 episodes, so a few months yet until that'll be happening). And thank you for the suggestions! I'll take a look at both of them.
@@Aaox ❤! I still need to watch scott pilgrim in some form or the other havent even watched the live action movie nor edgerunners yet. so little time so much to do. also I must recommend on reading the ascendance of a bookworm light novel because that's it shines even more so than the anime and for apotheary diaries - the manga.
What a sweet video. It's always nice to see you upload, and this time, your presentation style, tone, and subject matter really melded well together. Anime with a tender approach to struggles, and triumphs of social anxiety, combined with a video doing the same. Great work... and as always, it's very much appreciated.
as someone who also, funnily enough, has crippling social anxiety and actually was also somehow in a band at around 16, this show super SUPER resonated with me. seriously, the shot you used at around 8:58 was like a smack in the face because i'd seen damn near almost exactly that. god this show fuckin owned
I never got past the "learning to play the guitar and talking with a couple of friends about how it would be cool to be in a band" stage of the Bandmake process. It's very cool it resonated, I can easily see that making it more entertaining.
Pardon my dust; it was a combination of nothing really catching my eye to review (hence a year old show being the subject of this one) and somehow losing a month in planning time. And thank you! It certainly is.

Hearing "see you on the sunny side" in British accent makes me wonder how much of a meta joke that was about complex feelings of having anxiety of and desire for meeting friends.
