  • I really don't have enough good things to say about Hughes.
    First of all, it really doesn't get more unique and innovative than this rig. We passed this going to dump on the way into Tucson Estates looking for it. After waiting for about an hour and a half, we finally see what we were waiting for pulling in: this one-of-a-kind compaction trailer. Due to the fact Titan, Hughes, and Desert Dwellers Disposal (now WM) ran these kinds of rigs I always figured there was some local microbuilder creating these. But alas, the driver/owner told us he makes them all himself and has build about 7 of these, improving them as they go. This was his first.
    I can't begin to describe how ingenious this trailer is. First of all, he has the ability to distribute trash throughout the entire body before beginning to pack. This allows him to throw the larger and heavier stuff towards the rear of the body and the more easily compactable trash towards the packer. This allows never makes him have to wait on a packer to clear the hopper as is the case with a traditional MSL. Other benefits of this trailer include low cost, light weight, and flexibility. I particularly appreciated the very simple crusher panel. Being that this is the very first packer trailer, I certainly cannot wait to see the improvements on his later more refined trailers.
    On to the operation itself: He starts in their large trailer park (takes multiple days to cover it) collecting trash in the trailer and throwing bagged recycling in the back of the truck. You may notice some recycling being thrown in with the trash, this is due to resident non-compliance: recycling is required to be bagged so it can be thrown in the pickup. After finishing the route, the bagged recycling is offloaded into an on-site rolloff (collected with yet another homemade trailer). The body raises and an internal divider is set (I'm not entirely sure how that works, unfortunately I wasn't able to get a video of the divider) so he can meetup with another trash crew (they were using an open top trailer) to collect loose recycling in another trailer park of theirs. With the divider in place, it allows them to pack recycling into the same trailer without mixing; this is why the rear access doors are now closing.
    I'm sure many of you can appreciate how old school the whole operation is, from the homemade trailer to full manual routes with hauler provided manual bins, complete with stenciled names and phone numbers.
    Huge thanks to the owner/driver and his crew for allowing us to follow around and ask so many questions about the whole operation. I'm optimistic the future will bring more videos of his other creations.

    Wow this is really something different, very creative and independent! I don't really know what else to say, but I enjoyed reading the explanation of the equipment and service in your description, plus a couple of the more detailed comments below. I find it particularly cool he can load different stages of the body through the various openings - no multiple cycles and slow feeding of bulk materials like a conventional MSL, just straight in one of the open holes and gone! Interesting to see the blade without a follower, not that it appears necessary with how he works things. It's a wonder how so many residents can be hopeless when it comes to bagging the recycling as required - doesn't seem like it's a hard thing to do if they can sort the stuff in the first place! I hope to see more of these unique trailers :D

      Thanks for the comment Mitch, always appreciate reading these lengthy narratives from you :). It's a shame more residents don't follow directions with directions, agreed. Perhaps its the environmentalist in me but if I was him, I'd keep two 90s in the back of the pickup or even just regular manual bins, line them, and use them to bag recycling setout loose or even just consolidate smaller bags for easier offloading. Additionally, I'm sure I'd find myself keeping clean OCC separate for their higher market value ;)

      That's exactly how I felt, the operation from concept to execution is absolutely ingenious and honestly I could foresee a manufacturer pursuing a similar design for a low budget and light weight rig. Absolutely effective for these routes, using a regular garbage truck seems silly after seeing this creation.

    The part that intrigues me the most is probably the hand-operated crusher panel in conjunction with the packer, which strangely lacks a follower panel, which would be nice to see. I suppose a hydraulic crusher panel isn't necessary, because any large bulky items would get tossed towards the back of the trailer in one of those doors. I still can't quite figure out why the door nearest to the hopper says "recycle" on it, despite re-reading your description several times. Overall you've done a fantastic job documenting this very unique style of collection, and I can't wait to see some of this man's more recent trailers. I'm really curious to see how much he changed the original design, and how much he preserved from this one.

      i put the hydraulics on the sides of the blade behind a door you lift up when you need to do maintenance. i did it that way so in case we have a leak, it leaks in to the trailer not on the streets to avoid making a mess.

  • @georgewuzheer

    Way to satisfy. Film on Thursday post on Saturday what a wonderful surprise in my subscriptions. Wasn't expecting for the on route action to be quite as fast paced either. The nice thing about a trailer park in the middle of the desert is no worries about doing the whole route from the LHD side. Though I'm sure if he wanted to the owner would just cobble together some badass RHD conversion for the Chevy. This is some seriously impressive stuff. Giant corporate sloths can't get other giant corporations to make them the equipment tailored precisely to their work but one man designed, built, and runs an entire collection and transfer operation. Not to get all preachy but very very American and very very inspirational.
    Other than transferring recycling does the roll off trailer ever handle usual C&D waste work? How many stops would you guess he was doing that day? How far away do they have to haul trash and recycling? Most importantly how soon will you be back for more? :)

      Oops, sorry to not respond for 2 months (unless I'm forgetting answering your questions Facebook).
      Impressive and ingenious are still all I can think when I rewatching this video and recalling their operations, even after months. I'm still just blown away at how innovative and effective this trailer setup is.
      I believe the roll-off does do regular C&D, I just checked their website again and see an advertisement for 14-16 yard containers.
      As for how many stops, he does about a quarter of the trailer park with trash and bagged recycle on Wednesdays which is about 420 homes. The next one with contained recycling is 356 lots.
      I'm not sure where exactly he takes his materials, but the nearest landfill (closer than any transfers) is about 30 minutes east and the Friedman MRF (assuming he doesn't use WM's) is about 30 minutes north. Their yard is also north, so in retrospect it makes perfect sense to me he uses a roll-off for recycling so another truck can take it to avoid backtracking as much as possible.

      @k.hughes3240 7 лет назад

      our roll offs are picking up there own work. i don't just use them for transferring. and thank you for the kind words. that day we pick up around 800 stops. and your last question we drive about 30 min to dump out

    Genius/ghetto rigged AF. Certainly not a fan of how they handle recycling, especially if a resident sets out a can of perfectly sorted (though not bagged) recyclables. Gotta wonder why they dont just use a split trailer of some sort.

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer 7 лет назад +2

      That's the whole idea though. Just like an ASL won't pick up bags an you're required to use a cart, here you're required to use a bag.

    • @brianspencer6955
      @brianspencer6955 7 лет назад

      Agreed. The setup is epic and super custom. Nothing else out there like it. But recycling should be handled differently, like with a split trailer or possibly a dump trailer that raises and dumps into the rolloff, so no handling is required (so they can collect loose recycle).

    • @GarbageTrucksAZ
      @GarbageTrucksAZ  7 лет назад +1

      Like George said, Hughes and the trailer park both make it very clear recycling MUST be bagged. There simply isn't room to operate a split trailer. We found him here around 1pm doing his last street of trash. This route is pretty far out there so having to dump a split trailer 2 or 3 times at both a landfill and MRF would take much more time and gas. Besides, this trailer is split. He packs it full of trash all day, dumps, fills it with the remaining trash from the first park and then uses it only for recycle in the next. The whole operation is ingenious, resident noncompliance with bagging the recyclables is on them.
      Requiring recycling to be bagged in the first/largest trailer park allows him to offload recycling on site and then collect the loose recyclables in the next trailer park, who uses hauler provided cans.

      I didn't mean to be ignorant. Sorry if I was. I didn't realize just how perfect the whole setup was. I reading more into it, I understand how this works for both the hauler and the resident. Thanks again for getting this video to youtube. Certainly is an epic setup and yes, I really do mean it. I also love the custom msl. Certainly is a nice touch :)

    • @GarbageTrucksAZ

      Like I said in the description, the driver you see here built it 100% himself. It works perfectly for the small yet quickly growing operation. It allows for effective collection of trash and recycling in a low budget, light weight rig allowing him to get additional contracts with more competitive rates and not using a full sized garbage truck, which HOAs love because in this area they're responsible for road maintenance. Hiring Hughes saves money in not only collection rates but road maintenance costs.
