CLIP DESCRIPTION:
On his first morning without Joanna (Meryl Streep), Ted (Dustin Hoffman) tries to teach Billy (Justin Henry) how to make some very messy french toast.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Robert Benton's Oscar-winning adaptation of Avery Corman's bestseller takes on contemporary problems of divorce and shifting gender roles, as a jilted husband learns how to be a nurturing father. Manhattan housewife Joanna Kramer (Meryl Streep) walks out on her workaholic ad man husband Ted (Dustin Hoffman), leaving their young son Billy (Justin Henry) in Ted's less than capable hands. Through trial and error, Ted learns how to take care of Billy, devoting more energy to his family than to his work, and finally losing his high-powered job because of his new priorities. When Joanna returns with her own lucrative job and the intent to take custody of Billy, Ted finds employment that won't interfere with his paternal duties. Even though he proves that he can do it all, Joanna still wins in court. Joanna, however, rethinks her desires when she finally grasps how close father and son have become. Addressing the male side of the self-actualization question, previously explored from the female perspective in such 1970s movies as An Unmarried Woman (1978), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), and The Turning Point (1977), Kramer focuses on Ted's evolution from absent parent to ideal father, as he learns to balance domestic and professional lives in the shifting late-1970s social landscape. Joanna's attempt to achieve the same, however, gets buried; only Streep's sensitive performance prevents Joanna from seeming an unsympathetic harridan. Critics praised the film's realistic depiction of Ted's travails, as well as the three lead actors' work; and audiences, perhaps facing the same questions of divorce and self-realization, turned it into a box-office smash. It went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

My grandma watched this movie without knowing it was french toast, so when the movie ended, she went to her house and made them but the only difference is that she didn't call it "French toast" but "Kramers" instead. So now everyone in the family calls it Kramers even after knowing the name.
This really put a smile in my face ☺ Thanks for sharing
That's cool!
Cap
I love the way he made it
Some people lovingly refer to it as ‘Eggy Bread’ 🤔
I loved the contrast with this scene at the end, when Meryl Streep is coming to collect the child and we see how perfect the father and son have become with their french toast making routine. Brilliant film making
Samarth Advani あいうえお
"Did you remember to bring the chocolate chip ice cream home?"
Oops wrong scene
Dustin is great. Almost every role he does he appears to add in unintentional (or possibly intentional) comedic nuances that make each of his characters that much more human and likeable. At least that’s what I see anyway.
tall32guy Right?? I love when he starts trying to scoop the spilled egg on the counter back into the mug, with his hand. 😄
Righteous!
Favorite part of the scene for me is the little grin he has on his face when he makes the bacon joke lol He was so proud of that joke
@@calisongbird that's stupid
HOFFMAN and the Director ROBERT BENTON have said a lot of TED KRAMER's comical rants were improvised especially between him and his character's son. The "bacon joke" was an improvised line.
Well he might have not really been an expert at cooking, but at least he made sure his son was fed.
That's a basic need. Don't have kids if you are not willing to feed them.
No Mary he couldn't feed him that day as the toast was completely burnt to coal and they didn't have enough time to make another batch and he most probably gave him only a glass of milk to drink!
Who's Mary?
Joe L She’s Mary Sutton. She’s the babe to whose comment I replied! 😜
Geez, we should be grateful that our parents fed us lol. We didn't even ask to be here.
I don’t even have kids and somehow I can feel Ted’s anxiety. Shows how great an actor Dustin Hoffman is.
this reminded me of the times when I was so young my mother fell so sick and she had to stay bedridden for months, my father had to work, nurse my mother, take care of my little sister and I (5 and 4 years old at that time) he had to do all the house chores from cleaning to cooking etc and he couldn't ask anyone to help him.
At that time he always wore such anxious smile and pretended to be happy all the time saying my mother was asleep all the time just because she liked to sleep so I didn't even realise something wrong was going on.
now that I think about it, it must have been very hard, I'm almost his age at that time now, and I'm finding even hard to look after myself.
Your dad is a good one.
Did you know in the first meeting after a major illness diagnoses, like cancer etc., women are warned that their partner is very likely to leave them? 😢
Men generally aren't expected to be the primary parent, caretaker, or homemaker and many don't want to be, even temporarily.
Glad your dad stepped up and had the determination and love to get your family through a tough time.
That was sooooo stressful to watch
This scene is fridge brilliance because it mirrors the end of the film. In this scene Ted struggles to make breakfast for his son because he was always reliant on his wife. And because Ted was left to babysit Billy he simply didn't have a first clue on what to do. But by the end of the film he has developed into a better dad and making French toast perfectly demonstrated this.
I've used the line "bread is bread" so many times. Never gets old.
I'm craving French toast now.
b Red LOL
Me too and it's near dinner time.
hahahahahahaha me too dude! Come on over I'll make you some!
Alright, cool!
Crunchy french toast.
Is whole scene makes me unconfterble like the dad trying to not loose it and keep it light while the kid knows something isin't right
Dustin Hoffman is a seriously good actor.
I mean I believe he's late like a motherfucker.
we're having a fun time aren't we?
Ted thinks he is.
French Toast is one of the easiest things to make.
Thanks for letting me know. I'll give it a shot.
Max Power And one of my favorites to eat.
oh just stfu
No, you stfu.
I can boil water and make sandwiches.
Man...they cut this clip short. Just before the big payoff that puts the impact into the scene. Great film.
GOD DAMN HER!!!!...Dumbass' cut out the BEST part of the scene, I watched this movie for the first time last night and this scene gave me the BEST laugh I've had in awhile, CLASSIC scene!!!...GREAT MOVIE!!!!
2016BMWi8 LOL!!!
kimchipower LOL!!!
I loved the contrast with this scene at the end, when Meryl Streep is coming to collect the child and we see how perfect the father and son have become with their french toast making routine. Brilliant film making
I love Dustin Hoffman he's so funny in Meet The Fockers and Little Fockers Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
I just realized this kid is the bratty little brother of Molly Ringwald's character in 16 Candles, lol
Thank you! I knew he looked famliar.
Amanda Harris yes, in just 4 short years he transformed from a vulnerable, worried 7 year old thrust into a world of single parenthood in a Manhattan apartment into a cocky 11 year old kid in the Chicago suburbs that knows everything and challenging his upper middle class parents on their 20 year old daughters marriage, a naive Asian foreign exchange student, and on top of all that, their awkward middle daughter on her 16th birthday.
People make plans , make promises they don't know if they can keep , follow the patterns society dictates and try to keep up with cruel expectations , then children pay the price when all falls apart
I love the contrast between this scene and the final scene between when they have to say goodbye. It shows how far theyve come together. Theyre actually working together to make the best French toast and that makes it all the more heartbreaking that theyre being torn apart thanks to the ignorance and selfishness of others
This scene is golden.
How many times does Ted says Terrific? 😂
I don't know, but he is terrific.
Lmao this reminds me of when I had to teach my dad how to make scrambled eggs the right way cos everytime he cooked it the eggs would still be slimy and he'd do the same thing with fried eggs as well
I always watch this scene whenever I eat French toast😭
Gordon Ramsay is watching this and cringing af!
Mate were your unclean fingers a part of the ingredients list that I didn’t get?
No? THEN...*
😂😂😂
Now is the same life, but without cellphones.
I LOVE MERYL STREEP
It took me a while, but I notice that at 0:29 here "Ted" is saying that he is about to crack an egg with one hand, but he is holding the egg with his left hand and when the camera shows him actually cracking the egg on the cup, it is "Ted's" right hand cracking the egg on the cup while "Ted's" left hand is holding the cup.
Maybe he put it into his right hand
I went inside and made french toast after watching this scene
Billy should have had cereal during the week. French toast could have been a special breakfast on Saturday... one where daddy Ted can have a screwdriver.
Now I know why she left him.
hahahaa!
“We made french toast.” - awesome scene at court when he testified.
I would really like to get this movie on DVD for me and my mom to watch because this movie reminds me of something really sad and frustrating. 😞

Still never had french toast.
left out the best part 😩 “GOD DAMN HER” 😳
That is not how you Make French Toast Ted.
Loco4Life818 2.0 LOL!!!
"We take the bread 🍞 and we....uh....we...uh"....😆😆
No wonder why he was rain man 🤣😂 That's why he burned the French toast.
Meryl Streep is the goddess of all movies
Imagine that kid is now a grown adult, possibly he already has grandkids.
You missed off the best bit “that’s too much coffee”.
This is the scene where I learned how to make French Toast.
Ted's actor went on to co star with Robin Williams in Hook 12 years later.
It is a great Movie., One of my top favorites. Kramer vs Kramer. :D
Classic. Still holds up today. A++++
You need some oil in the pan 😬
Ted kramer loves French toast
2:00 I thought billy was screaming
not helping with my anxiety...
I love me some good French toast.
French toast with authentic Challah bread is the best.
I have nightmares about how he didn't wash his hands
thats the boy who played on sixteen candles
He could have hired a nanny on his big salary.... problem solved. This film only works if the father is from the working/lower class
Gosh, one of my favourite films doesn't make sense.
@@offbeat65 Hollywood has no clue about the reality lol
Saying that all chefs are men is terrific indeed.
I learned to make French toast from watching this movie
Toast bread 🍞

Watch this and compare it to when they make it at the end of the film...
When we make the French toast
Gahh! They cut out the end! It tops the whole scene. 😣
Today is valentine's day
back when child actors actually TRIED to act and took their craft seriously....now most child actors suck and are just there for the paycheck
The kid in this was great!
Brooke Hanley LOL!!!
@Nate The Kramer vs Kramer DVD has a documentary that explains that the style of acting they encouraged for this child actor was at odds with the way most child actors at the time behaved. In fact, the production had to ask the kid's real life parents to stop coaching him in the artificial way that was more common.

That's not how you make French toast
He didn't know what he was doing. He was in a daze especially since his wife just left him and he has to talk to his son about it.
@@joel8583 He has also probably never made it in his life.
French toast is one of the easiest things to make
God bless our bollywood, not only they stole the story of this film but also copied many of scenes as it as.
Film is "Akele hum akele hum"
This is a great movie but my father, who was no whiz in the kitchen, totally disregarded Kramer Vs. Kramer based on how impossibly inept the father is in this scene. Looking at it now, my dad was right. Hoffman acts like he's a six year old. lol
Father and son
Why is the dad acting like a psychopath
dirtiest French toast I have ever come across
I like. Does 70s show. 📺👍
What kind of father can’t even make breakfast for his child? That’s what you get for not prioritizing your family.
When will he came
This is why I never bothered to see this movie.
I’ll tell you one thing I live in a big house girlfriend we go to dinner beautiful kitchen lots of money in the bank. I’m very fortunate you actually think I’d be having him in the morning. No wife bratty kid in a dingy apartment. No money bills piling up, making French toast, and I dumpy kitchen and sitting in that little kitchen table give me a break.
He forgot the salt and pepper.
ON FRENCH TOAST?
Never.
eggs milk and little vanilla extract is all you need maybe some cinnamon if you really want to get fancy wit it
Pepper? Nah bruh. A little salt, maybe.
I never put that in.
And not once did father or Billy wash their hands after they used the bathroom 🤮
Thanks Kramer’s boys I appreciate it.
When I was 12 that was afternoon snack for me and my sister and I increased many kilos 😒
yep..sure they want to be actors, but some of them should NOT be actors, I'm not going to name names, but some of them its obvious they are just repeating lines in a monotone voice with no emotion...and their parents are applauding all the way to the bank. When they should be using money to get them serious acting classes if they plan on making a career out of it.
I watched this movie in netflix yesterday really enjoyed the movie I did.
Pathetic father great actor!
Akele hum, akele tum movie Indians will understand.
So this is what people did before youtube...
I wouldn't want to eat that
Aamir Khan's movie Akele hum , akele tum is copied from this movie .
