Great video and perfect timing! I have my next trip mapped out and know the basics of Gaia by playing around with it quite a bit. But knowing these tips on the layers and how to best set them up is excellent. Also love the idea of having a massive area of the overland layer always on there. I was wondering if something like that as an option. Thanks!

Just finished: Really appreciate the dive into the overland layer. I haven't spent much time planning routes etc, of late so getting a run down on that was super helpful. Love the optimization in their data that allows that downloading most of the western US in one go.

Thanks for the vid. I was ready to sign up for OnX, but ended up going with Gaia. (yes, I used your link 😊). What really sold me was the cell phone coverage layer. Having two young kids and a wife who needs to be reachable, this can really come in handy. And living in Utah, the smoke forecasts are also useful when picking a place to travel to. It does seem that OnX is a little more user friendly, but the sheer amount of information and maps are much more valuable and worth the learning curve.

For National Forest the USFS 2016 layer can be helpful for planning as it offers additional information. Thank you so much. The layers were kicking my butt. I have been using both Gaia and OnXOffraod both their premium versions. OnX is way easier to use but way less features. It does have a map key that is nice though. Gaia shows the trails but not what kind, hiking, Jeep, green sticker or plate, single track dirt bike or dirt road and so on. But after this I’m going to give Gaia another try as my main map. Thanks.

How do I download the same maps to both my iphone and iPad pro but only include satellite data on my iPad pro but not on my iphone. Although I use my iphone to navigate using the iphone's GPS I still use my iPad pro to zoom in and out to explore what's around me and that is why I want downloaded satellite data. Thoughts?

It requires so much clicks and time to do that, the folder structure view is a mess. I do not understand why they do not improve that...
