    Thanks for the video, Bentley. Excellent. You've inspired me to have a go at breeding rainbows and the info on what to feed and how often is invaluable. Going to try breeding the Murray River Rainbow over the southern summer, local to where I live and should be a good starter. I'll let you know how I get on if you like.

      Greg Guise I'd love to hear progress. I got teased by Mr. Lange that there's a Pascoe River up in northern Queensland with a little trifasciata in it, so now my long term goal is to get some!

    So Bentley this morning I have been watching your videos. I could just keep complimenting you over and over but after awhile the words awesome and amazing and wonderful just get too redundant. What I will say is that if I was Gary Lang and I had you and Lucas taking a great interest in Rainbow Fish, I would feel secure about my life's work being well maintained, supported and developed.
    Good on you for your passion.

      Thank you Kerri! Don't go too far back, that's when all the growing pains of audio issues happened LOL. More seriously, I do love Rainbows, and the running river especially hold a special place in my heart because of the story that goes with them. I got confirmation (I intend to include in an update) that the Running River has been confirmed saved at this point, with two different locations now holding small populations which are thriving not far from their original location.

    I had my plants grow too fast in my tank with 6 very young/small and breeding Turqoise Rainbows. I decided to put all the plants I removed into a bucket, 5 days later I have at least 2 fry!!!! epic, I have not kept or bred Rainbows before, exciting ! Is there a easy way to make home made food? I dont have supplies for fry....

      Yeah I've got them in the tupperware floating in a 10 gallon at 82-83. Crazy but one of the little guys hatched in the vial. Been dusting the provided food three times a day. 20% water change in the tray every day enough? Should I move the fry into the actual tank right after they hatch?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      I would give them a week or two in the tray, then move to tank carefully, just make sure there is minimal water movement until about 1 month. If you can, 25% water change in the morning and evening on the tray just to be safe.

      Sounds good. Yeah I've got a cycled sponge filter and an adjustable air pump and even a 1/4" shut off valve to slow the water down. When do you think I should attempt feeding live baby brine?

    Hi Bentley. I was wondering if you could do a video explaining how to identify fertile rainbow eggs ? I have been trying to breed Murray River Rainbows (young fish under 12 months), but uncertain whether eggs are fertile. Thanks.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      A great idea, but that will be hard to shoot without a major camera upgrade (its just very hard to shoot with my current gear), but - I can do a quick explanation. The easiest way involves methylene blue - if you keep the eggs in a small dish of water, like the shallow trays I showed in a video, add a single drop of methylene blue. After about an hour, eggs which absorb the blue are not fertile, ones that still remain clear are fertile.
      If you want to do it without the blue, you should be able to see a pair of small black dots, the young fish eyes, on fertile eggs. Its a little tough the first time, but once you see it once, you'll recognize it forever.
      Cheers!

    What size golden pearls do you use? 5-50 micron? Would 50-100 micron work for praecox fry?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  6 лет назад +1

      I use the Sera Micron more often than golden pearls, but I typically will use 5-50 micron. For praecox I think the 50-100 should be fine as they start a bit larger than something like a boesemani.

  • @dizzlerizzle2775

    My baby boesmani are so microscopic, ideas on raising them to the size your babies are, about a week old is what mine are rn

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      I tend to use Sera Micron: bit.ly/2G4xrOl but you could also use a product called golden pearls. The key is to get something in that 5-50 micron range, so a very fine powdered food. You don't need a lot per feeding, but try to feed 3-4 times a day if you can for the first couple weeks, then they should be able to feed on baby brine shrimp - from there I like 1 feeding of brine then 1 feeding of micron/golden pearls per day. Hope that helps, if you need more, shoot me an email: bentley,pascoe@gmail.com

    Hi Bentley. Great news - at last count I have 11 little Murray River Rainbows swimming around a small container floating in a 20 gallon tank. I thought they'd all fungus-ed, but saw a small black body shape this morning and coming in from work this arvo spotted several 1-2mm little silver coloured free swimming fry.Okay - what to do now? I don't have fry food and plan to turn flake food into powder. Will this be okay and when should I start feeding them?My other option is to put the fry into an outdoor planted pond? What are your thoughts?Thanks for taking the time to answer!

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      If you can grind it up fine enough it can work, the problem is when they're in the first week or so they need something super fine, 50 micron or so. Doable though. You want to feed them as soon as you see they've hatched. They don't have a yolk sac like other fish, so they'll need to have a food source. I try to feed mine 2-3 times a day in small amounts. As for out door ponds, I would avoid that for the first batch so you can monitor them more closely - they really want VERY stable temp and water clarity, so a pond is a risk.

      Hi Bentley. have ground up the food and released the fry into a small tank with an air filter and Wisteria floating on top. Feeding ground up flake food. Although they are very hard to see, have spotted several tiny fry feeding on the dusty food. After three days they are still going well and have increased in size. Hopefully will continue! Thanks for the videos and advice, has kept me going!!

    Hey bentley I wanted to clear things up a bit. I have been collecting dwarf neon's eggs daily and they all turn white within a day. I ran out of methylene blue so it could be fungus but does it also mean that they might be infertile. I have two males and two females and they are around 1.2 yrs old. They are in a community tank with other fish aswell.
    Hope you reply.
    Thanks!!

      Most likely fungus, but that fast also does point to unfertilized eggs

      @@BentleyPascoe wow that was fast. Thanks for the reply. So why am I getting all of them as unfert eggs if thats the case. Or could it be that the unfert ones turn white first and the rest turn white the next day due to fungus?

    I have a rainbow fish about to lay eggs? When should we put the fish in breeding tank to lay eggs? Also, how long we can let fish be in breeding tank?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  3 года назад

      Rainbows will spawn everyday. Usually leaving them in a tank for 1-2 weeks is good as long as you know they are putting eggs in a mop.

      Nothing yet, but things like Celestial Pearl Danios and Schoutedeni Puffers are even smaller - very hard for the first month on those fish.
