I remember growing up in the 90s and walking into Williams-Sonoma around the holidays. They gave out peppermint bark sample and hot spiced cider. Those things are so nostalgic to me around the holidays because of those fun 90s bustling mall trips.
It makes me so happy that you bake and can make stuff like this. When I was about your age, I was begging my mom for an Easy Bake Oven. She said no, handed me a cook book and told me to ask if I had any questions .
We made almond bark with huge blocks of white chocolate all the time when I was a kid in the ‘70s/80s. Since the block was so large (before they started selling it in smaller cubes), Mom had my sister and I chopping it up to melt in the double-boiler. Once, Sis finished her chopping before I did, and reached over with the knife to help me out. She ended up slicing across two of my fingers, a scar I still have today-my bark scar!
I would use a larger baking dish because I like peppermint bark to be thin. As a result, I would probably need to crush more peppermint candy to sprinkle on top due to the larger surface area.
Thank you for this recipe - last Xmas, a few of the peppermint bark pieces I made separated into the separate white/chocolate layers, when cut. I looked at lots of recipes, afterwards, to try and figure out why. Thank you for the tip on preventing this problem...Merry Xmas to you and everyone! 🎄
I'm glad you redid this video! I watched the old one a couple of weeks back, but the update is nice. Thank you! I'm making these this year for the first time.
Peppermint bark is so fun and easy to make. I like to marble the white chocolate in the milk/dark chocolate before topping it with crushed peppermint 😊 I’ve never really had any problems melting white chocolate in the microwave. I do tend to freeze my chocolate chips (I’ve forgotten my reasons). I warm it in a ceramic bowl in 30 second intervals until it’s soft enough to pour, just like the milk and dark chocolate.
Made peppermint bark last year with my daughter for the first time. Our milk chocolate cooled down a little too much, but a kitchen torch worked wonders to soften it up enough for the white chocolate
I buy them in the precut packages, they fit a cookie tray perfectly. In this videos he’s using a paper clip to hold it up but if you’re putting it in the oven if you cut the corners and put it in a baking dish it will work. For this recipe I used the precut parchment and it goes up the sides enough that I didn’t have to cut it.
Great and easy recipe! I made it today. I used a 11" x 7.5" pan because I prefer a bit thinner bark. And a couple more candy canes because of the additonal surface area. Going to be gifts along with many other Christmas treats. Thanks!
I also have had the problem of separating candy in the past. I am going to make this today for Christmas gifts. I will have to adjust ... I don't have enough white chocolate so I will use Almond Bark to fill in. But I am so jazzed that my layers will not fall apart!
I add 1 teaspoon coconut oil in both white chips & chocolate chips before melting, it gives a smooth shiny finish. Peppermint candies are cheaper than candy canes 😉
I like and love your cooking episode, I' live in Bangladesh, when I fell something special I prepare for my family. I was searched your channel and recipe, Live long, May Allah Bless you, Meherunnessa
My cook book arrived the other day my Xmas present from my husband I want to bake the caramel cake I try the peanut butter cookies it's so delicious. Thanks
Perfect timing with this video! I was planning on making the white chocolate peppermint cookies from the new book, and since I'll be picking up peppermint extract, now I can make this as well.
There was peppermint bark before the 90s! It was the added chocolate layer that Williams Sonoma popularized. My aunt used to make the white chocolate only bark back in the 70s and I loved it. If there was chocolate then, it was a dip or drizzle on the white chocolate.
Hi John. Love your channel. I noticed on this video and others that when you scrape things off the cutting board you very often use the sharp edge of the blade instead of the back/flat side. I was told not to do this as it dulls the blade. Was I told wrong or is this not a big concern. Thanks.
Hi John! Big fan here, I have both of your cookbooks and met you during your 1st book tour! I was wondering if you will be updating your Peppermint Sheet Cake video that was uploaded on your RUclips channel about 5 years ago? I make that cake every year for the holidays.
Okay thank you, I have to leave a like on this video just because you went into some important detail about a double boiler I was totally going to let that sucker rest in the water thank you
The peppermint bark that I tasted had a layer of cookie on the bottom, with a layer of white chocolate and crushed peppermint candy on top of the cookie. It was really soft and easy to eat.
If the chocolate sets completely, could you correct it by setting it in a warm oven for a minute? Warm, set to 300 and turn the oven off when it registers 150?
Didn't realize that peppermint bark was that easy to make. I've only ever had store bought peppermint bark but now I don't have an excuse to not make it.
Chocolate and mint is not popular here in France. In fact, red and white candy canes are not mint flavored…but strawberry! I might make this for my UK/Kiwi friends.
One tip: When you melt your chocolates, don't bring them above 95 degrees F. Keeping them below that will not break the temper, and you will have nicely tempered chocolate, as shown.

A few years ago I went inside and they still do that. Yummy.
The statement with regards to extracts "Too much is too much", truer words have never been spoken!

I love Peppermint bark! The sound of the chocolate being cut is so satisfying.

MOSTly melted, lol. I love how soothing your voice is.

I love peppermint bark. Can you do a video on how you cut your parchment paper to fit an 8x8 baking dish as nicely as you have it fitting in yours?

I learn so much from your videos. You’re incredibly relaxing and your videos really help quell my anxiety.
Thank you!
Peppermint Bark is my Favorite, I like everything with Peppermint in it.
Peppermint bark is such a classic treat! Simple, delicious, and perfect for the holidays. Thanks for sharing this easy recipe!

I'am from Indonesia, i really like all your recipes and i'am still 13 years old 🎉👍🏻👍🏻
I make this every year. It's one of my daughters favourite christmas treats.
I just picked up some peppermint extract and said that I needed to make some bark. Your video came just in time. I will be making it this weekend
Make sure there is no water in the extract. It can make the chocolate seize. I use peppermint oil. Wilton had a good one.
I see that he only put the peppermint into the white chocolate, I put it in the semi sweet. Which is why I have to use the peppermint oil.
Thanks
I'm happy to see you using a Bain-marie. I don't own a microwave, so this is how I always melt chocolate.
I made this for gifts for co workers. Thank you!!!!
🤤🤤🤤 yum peppermint bark. The chopping sound is so satisfying to me
i was just thinking of making this when I saw your video but now I'll make it way better instead of winging it

Can you do a Florentine bar/tart? I saw it made on a holiday baking championship, and everyone seemed to love it.
Love your videos. Could you recommend specific chocolate bars? Thanks🤗
I could do this with my mom because we can make good dinner and dessert together
How do both John and Brian stay so thin and fit with so much delicious food around? I would be 50lbs heavier surrounded by so much temptation! 🍫
Tolle Idee 🎉
Looks great!
Very good sir!
Suggest for make Dubai Chocolate please 😁.

Can you use the peppermint that is sprinkle type consistency.. more broken up than the crushed one you have here?
I made this years ago and it separated 😮 gotta try again!
Heyy can u do a recipe for Christmas fruit cake/ plum cake. And give alternatives for the alcohol used??
John, this may be a stupid question, but can you tell me what parchment paper you use because the one I use don’t cut as easily as yours
Can you mix the candy canes in the white chocolate together and pour it on the dark chocolate?
YUM!❤❤❤Tysm!❤🙏👑🕊🎄
Hi Mr. John , I wanted to ask whether we can add buttermilk and sourcream to a red velvet cake?

Which knife is this?
Ok… probably a dumb question but, should I use a glass bowl or can I use a metal one? Does it make a difference
i should make this on the 24th
