I think Hailey is spot on here. IMO, there’s definitely value in learning from a structured education experience, that also provides the constructive feedback from a professor, someone who knows the ins and outs of what makes a photo a great photo. As opposed to a friend or family member who may or may not know all the little nuances that can make a photograph stand out from the rest. That’s something that RUclips University can’t provide.

Hearing both perspectives as well as reading through the comments gave me a better understanding of the process to pursue photography.
I think networking through youtube with other creators seems intimidating if you compare it to being in a room filled with students knowing we all paid to be there. It's ironic though, because in college: there's blackboard, which feels like tools that I can find in yt (also skillshare, thanks to the prior comment 👍)

I think if money is no issue, then none of these choices matter and it's personal preference. If you aren't placed to be able to afford college/don't want the loan then the winner is online learning

It’s probably not worth going in to debt with college/school for photography skills. Video/Film *maybe* if you’re at a school with good connections that can get you a job easily in your industry.
But not everyone is self directed and good at creating a lot of self structure. To Hailey’s point- I didn’t even know the words to describe things I didn’t understand: “bokeh” for example. Trying to figure out how to search for how to create bokeh without knowing that word was like trying to describe blue to someone who only knows purple and red.
I’ve learned photography and videography skills from RUclips, experimentation and talking to other photographers mostly.
I think one thing most photographers should invest in is business coaching of some kind. Learning how to create a PROFITABLE photography business that pays for your desired lifestyle via RUclips sounds hard and near impossible.

Interesting. My vote is RUclips/skillshare. Everything you learn in the two years of school you can learn in two month online if you apply yourself in learning everything there is to know. But I do think some bias may come depending on one’s passion/genuine interest in photography. If you’ve always had a thing for cameras, you grow up knowing the basics they teach you at school. But if you didn’t have that, I can see why people look at schools as the solution

Wow this was so good love you both I am 50/50 I agree with both I did go to Forsyth Tech and took up some photography courses there I was able to have hands on and learned the basics of photography like ISO, Shutter speed, how to shoot in Manuel, the history of photography, we did some test field hands on shooting as well so I am grateful to had gone there and it was not expensive thank God 😊 but on the other hand I also learn so so much from RUclips as well I’m more of a hands on learner so a resource I was able to use was other photographers that I knew had more years of experience in areas like using lights both in studio and outside portrait using lights but I can definitely say with me I learn more hands on 🙏🙏 but great video love you both

Interesting discussion. I vote for youtube. :-) It would be interesting to see a top 10 list of online resources (including youtube videos) that you used to learn photography.

I went to a University in Chicago, IL for photography. For the most part I would say it’s a waste of money. University is for people who want to become studio artists who use photography as a medium. Lots of people on my program made abstract art.
I learned a lot about portraiture and studio lighting - but the program was catered to make you an artist. Lots of critical thinking. Nothing related to becoming a commercial photographer or having a business.
To be honest, you only did well in class if someone was naked, or your topic was about social justice or some kind of inequality. This part of university is sad.
The only PRO to going to a university for photography is getting critiqued by peers and professors. You get all the “bad” ideas out, and learn not to photograph something just because it looks cool, but because you want to convey something. The environment of working with others and getting better each time is great.

College and university provide you with practical training and not just theory you don’t get neither on RUclips.
Plus, you make it sound like there are a series of tutorials, just waiting for you on RUclips that are sequenced and outlined and structure out gradually from one lesson to another.
The amount of time wasted scrolling through tons of personally opinionated stories, or merchants, selling you products, and claiming that it’s their own opinion, doing comparisons to disclaim other great products out there is a bunch of BS you can do better without.
In college, you learn about light manipulation on the Internet on RUclips you learn about gear and how the gear is doing the work for you.
